Is TV ready for lip-locks?

Indian television has shed its conservative avatar. What is becoming increasingly common are bold scenes and themes unlike ever before

PALLAVI KHARADE

If Bollywood is changing, can the small screen be far behind? Not really, if some scenes from the serials are any indication. In Star Plus' Viraasat, there are passionate sex scenes between a married couple. In Dulhann, Vidya, a village girl is shown being molested by local goons. Earlier, Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki on Star Plus had showed the rape of a blind young girl. Even in Kasautii Zindagi Kii, Mukti, a driver's daughter was drugged and raped by Prerna's son. In Star Plus' Pyar Ke Do Naam, Ek Radha, Ek Shyam, Radha's fianc tries to rape her inside the hotel room.
Such scenes apart, infidelity and extra-marital affairs are dominant on the small screen. In Saat Phere, the ghar jamai has an affair with the maid when the wife is away, a sure sign that television is taking big steps towards having bold content.
Agrees actor Gaurav Chanana, "It is true that television serials are getting bolder. The audience is sick of oldfashioned family dramas, and wants some change. Also, Indian audiences are exposed to bolder stuff like Sex And The City and Desperate Housewives (Star World). As these serials are doing well in our country, producers of Hindi serials are toeing the same line." Sangeeta Ghosh, whose love scene in Viraasat was talked about says, "TV is a reflection of the society. As the society and its values change, thanks to the wide exposure to the Internet, it is natural that TV serials and their stories will get bolder." Director Girish Vasaikar doesn't think Indian audience will digest the bold scenes for too long. "Because of an overdose of melodrama, the audiences are sick of it. So serialmakers are trying to put bold scenes to increase the TRPs. But as people won't relate to it, these bold scenes won't work in the long run. Melodrama is here to stay for a long long time." he says. How successful the ploy will be, only time can tell.

you dont need to make it bolder......especially when many of the viewers may be young kids who are watching it with family........its a bit uncomfortable to watch.....plus the thing that used to be so great about our entertainment business was that it was great without having any bold scenes......but the want to be western has ruined it all.......naina

hmmm... well, there are 2 sides to this.
Firstly, I agree that this is considered family viewing times and programmes should reflect family values and encourage a certain level of morals. One shouldn't feel uncomfortable or disgusted watching TV. I certainly would feel uncomfortable allowing my kids to watch something like this, until they develop a certian understanding of the situation.

However, on the other hand - it is what people want to watch. To some people, modernisation is westernisation and you just gotta move with the times to stay on top. These are not my sentiments, but there has to be some sort of give and take if one wants to move forward... And because its happening in hollywood, its gonna happen everywhere else too.

There needs to be some discussion (ugh) or at least some sort of respect attached to viewing these programmes. One needs to look at them at face value. Issues of rape, are realistic issues that affect each one of us as it could happen to anyone at anytime. These are realistic and therefore high profile. If they affect ratings, the scenes will be removed and changed, but because people enjoy them and want more... the directors continue creating them...

Just my views... 😉

It is embarracing to watch such bold sceans together with your family both older and younger. Besides these sceans are not necessary. they (TV producers) do not realise what it is doing to the socity and our future generations. What we watch on Tv or movies will affect and mould our socity. If western people are so promiscuase dose that mean we should follow them?

well to me, the bold scenes are only there to increase TRP ratings. the directors have no clue what they do when they air such scenes. It's really embrassing for a whole family to sit down and watch such scenes--I know how it is personally. and with brijesh having 2 wives, one for having a child, they are bound to show some bold scenes which will make SP no longer a family show. A family can not sit down together to watch a show that has bold scenes. a family together can see someone have 2 spouses--that's really common these days, but it's ridiculous to have such scenes to increase trps. another reason for these bold scenes is the want to be like the western culture...the east does not kno how the west lives and what it's morals are but yet the east wants to become the west and this is not the best way to become like the west. just because the west has such bold shows doesn't mean that the east does the same. the west has seperate values that are totally different from the east. so overall, the east--our industry, needs to stop making such scenes just to increase TRP and try to become the west!!
