After travelling to international film festivals and being dubbed in Chinese and Russian, animation film "Delhi Safari" is releasing here Oct 19. Actress Urmila Matondkar, who has lent her voice for a leopard in the 3D venture, says the film will be a "mad ride".

Directed by Nikhil Advani, bilingual stereoscopic 3D animation film "Delhi Safari" has voiceovers from Boman Irani, Akshaye Khanna, Govinda and Suniel Shetty.

"I have given my voice for the character Begum, she is a leopard - the movie starts and ends with her. All the characters in the film are adorable. This film will be a mad ride," the 38-year-old told IANS.

The film has been showcased at the Annecy Film Festival in France and it walked away with the best feature film (theatrical) award at the FICCI FRAMES 2012 this year.

"I am not an expert to comment anything about animation but all I can say is that 'Delhi Safari' has done well abroad and at many film festivals. The film has also been dubbed in Chinese and Russian. The film is in 3D and it takes a long time to make an animation film," she said adding that she doesn't have much idea about the output from the movie.

'Delhi Safari' to get an "American-style" release across India on October 18

Posted by Fred (Fred Patten) on Sat 6 Oct 2012 - 10:49

Animation Xpress, vol. 10 #371 for October 4 reports that Delhi Safari, the CGI animated feature about an angry monkey, a laid-back bear, a scheming parrot, a mother leopard, and her cute cub trekking across India to the human city of Delhi to protest the strip-mining of their forest, will release on around 300 screens across India on October 18. The Hindi-language feature has a strong Bollywood voice cast.

Animation Xpress has a long interview with Krayon Pictures' Nishith Takia that shows its poster and new promotional art. "Our film has got screened at Annecy International Film Festival and has also won the best Animated Feature Film at FICCI FRAMES in India, has boosted our confidence in the way the film has come out." The film has a positive School Contact program at over 3,000 schools across India because of its strong pro-ecology message.

Delhi Safari has been dubbed into English with an all-star cast (Jason Alexander, Cary Elwes, Christopher Lloyd, etc.) for an American release sometime during 2013.

There's more to cinema than facing the camera: Urmila Matondkar

Published: Wednesday, Oct 10, 2012, 8:52 IST | Updated: Wednesday, Oct 10, 2012, 8:53 IST
By Aakanksha Naval-Shetye | Place: Mumbai | Agency: DNA

ctress Urmila Matondkar might have been away from the camera for a while, but she insists that she has never really been away from films. "There's much more to cinema than just facing the camera, and I have been busy with a lot of it," says theRangeela girl as we catch up with her for a quick chat. "Besides that, I have also been travelling, reading, doing lots of things that I never had the time to do before. I have always grabbed life with both hands and made the most of it, and that's what I have been up to," she adds.

Urmila is really excited about her next film, where she has lent her voice to a leopard in Nikhil Advani's next, Delhi Safari. What drew Urmila to the animated film is the excitement of being a part of something that you are convinced will add a dimension to you.

"Just because it is a voiceover, it doesn't become any less exciting or challenging for an actor. Working on this film has been a mad, crazy and fun ride for me, as every actor has brought on some quirkiness to their characters," says the actress.

However, she refuses to call it her comeback. "There is no comeback for me! Films are always a part of the actor and specially in my case because I started out as a child actor. Just because I was not seen onthe screen for the past two years doesn't mean I have snapped off my ties with films. Where's the question of a comeback, then? I think it's a very shallow word that we only use here. Would Meryl Streep's film when she's at 60 be called a comeback? Then why use the term here?" she questions.

Considering she is catching up on all the different aspects of cinema, one can't help but wonder if she has any plans of turning director or producer like many of her peers? "No," she says dramatically. "I don't have the personality to either direct or produce a film. I have the personality of an actor, and that's what I am happy being. I don't believe in dabbling in everything coming my way, ki chalo abhi painting kar lo, abhi book likh lo, just to stay in the limelight. Those who do it, do it, but I don't need that, thanks! I am a people-made star and after the success that I've had, it's more important for me to think of quality than quantity," she says. "I have always believed that success is great, but beyond that we need to grow as human beings too and learn to see what's beyond that beautiful bubble that we live in. I'd hate to be a fabulous actor but not have grown as a person. I prefer work that would take me forward rather than doing everything that comes my way," smiles Urmila. So, what would excite her then? "The same as always! Interesting scripts… I am game for them any day," she says.

At par with Hollywood toon flicks: Nikhil Advani's 'Delhi Safari' promises world class 3-D

By ABHIK SEN

PUBLISHED: 20:10 GMT, 3 October 2012 | UPDATED: 20:10 GMT, 3 October 2012

Have you seen the Facebook campaign of Delhi Safari? If you haven't, do check them out - the visuals are stunning.

But there is much to the animation film beyond the fact that it is directed by Nikhil Advani and voiced by the likes of Govinda, Suniel Shetty, Boman Irani, Akshaye Khanna and Urmila Matondkar.

The English version has voices by Jason Alexander, Christopher Lloyd, and Vanessa Williams, among others. For example, do you know that the film-makers had to redo 120 shots or so when they opted for stereoscopic 3D?

The film Delhi Safari promises high level animation and 3-D

The film Delhi Safari promises high level animation and 3-D

This was because they wanted to release the film in the US, where that is the animation format used.

This was revealed to us by Nishith Takia, co-founder and director of Krayon Pictures, the studio behind the film.

'When the audience goes to watch a 3D animated film, he expects a visual experience he's used to while watching a $100 million animated film from Hollywood.

While we don't have such a budget for an animation film, we have to at least give the paying audience something akin to that experience,' Nishith said, adding that the studio took eight to 10 months to upgrade the film to stereoscopic 3D.

He specifically thanked Autodesk for 'hand-holding them' through the film. What exactly is stereoscopic 3D? 'It gives you the depth of vision that isn't there in just 3D,' Nishith explained, adding that since it is an animation film with a global issue at its core, it had universal appeal.

The 'animation Bollywood masala film' sees the animals travelling to Delhi to protest against deforestation. Anand Bhanushali, technical director, Krayon Pictures, said the studio developed a custom pipeline for the film after a lot of research, with the emphasis on stability.

'After spending three months in understanding the requirements and lot of research, Krayon chose Autodesk Maya as the base or primary animation operating system.

Along with its own proprietary asset management solution 'Puppet', Autodesk Maya became the core of the pipeline right from modelling to rigging and animation,' he said.

Krayon's research and development department built massive codes in every part of the assembly line since Autodesk Maya supports Python, he added.

A lot of hard work has gone into making the film. Let's hope the audience loves it and we at last have a finished animation/FX product out of the great backend office called India.

I LOVED the trailer. So gonna watch this. Bollywood has stopped making good films for children. I think this time audience should support such animation films, this will only lead to the growth of animation in India.

Cartoon films are made especially for children. Animation is for everybody...its high time that Indian Audiences should realizes their backwardness of thoughts and realize how much of a powerful medium animation really is. After so many years..a film like The Lion King rocked the international markets being at #1 on the box office for three consecutive weeks. and No, i don't think that the film was aimed at children only coz they can't understand the complexity of the subject.

My Support for Delhi Safari...hope it rocks the nation !!!! 👏⭐️
