Chapter 57

Geet entered along with Meera to find a middle aged man, woman and a young girl sitting and chatting with Maan and Daadima.

Daadima smiled at her but Geet could read some apprehensions in her eyes.

"Aayie Geet. Aapko shatyad yaad na ho although Krishankantji aaye the aapki shaadi mein. Yeh Poonam ke chachaji, chachiji aur unki choti behen hein. Her marriage just got fixed so they have come to invite us for the engagement and wedding."

[Come Geet. You may not remember although Krishankantji had come in your marriage. They are Poonam's chachji, chachiji and her younger sister. Her marriage just got fixed so they have come to invite us for the engagement and wedding.]

Geet smiled politely and said namaste. She did not know what to say more but sat down beside Daadima. She looked at Maan who had a closed emotion on his face. Suddenly chachaji started talking and Maan got busy paying them full attention.

Geet sat for some time but she hardly had any input other than formal talks. She was feeling weird and finally left at the pretext of freshening up.

Maan expected Geet to be very upset for not only missing her function but that too because of Poonam's relations. He knew it was a very big day for her but alas he could not just ignore chacha/chachi and choti. They had actually come to ask his opinion before saying final yes and to discuss other marriage related things. They still considered him like a son and he could not leave them and go to the award function. He had not told them anything either because he knew that they will leave if they felt they were causing any inconvenience to him or his family.

But that did not stop him from feeling guilty and sense of failure filled his thoughts.

"Ek baar phir, I have broken her expectations. She was so excited about this and it was such an important day for her. Kya kahunga…kaise manaunga use?"

After they left, Maan came to the room. He looked for Geet but she was nowhere. Maan was startled and he went to her studio and the backyard but could not find her there either. He started panicking thinking she again left him and a surge of desperation and emotions filled him. He ran back to his room as Daadima and others looked on but let it go, understanding that Geet might be upset.

Zindagi me aaj lamhe khaas aaye

aate aate dono ke dil paas aagaye Hai

gumon ke saaye mein bahut mashroof the hum

aapki aankhon ki mohabbat dekh na paaye hum

vivah ke bandhano ko pura kar na paye hum

aapki pyar ke jharoke ko ehsaas kar na pye hum

door hue aapse , dil ne behaal kiya humko

aapke hone ka ehsaas ka dastak diya

Maan again checked the washroom and the balcony. That's when Nakul came and told him – "Maine didi ko terrace pe jaate hue dekha hai"

[I saw didi going on the terrace]

Maan nodded and mouthed him thank you. He ran to the terrace to find Geet standing near the rails gazing at the sky. Her hair ruffled in the slight breeze and so did her saree pallu. She had still not changed and was still wearing a white saree with red border. Her hands were folded onto her chest as she looked like a desolate picture just staring at some random star.

Maan walked close to her and hugged her from behind placing his hands around her waist and chin on her shoulder.

"Naaraz ho Geet….hona bhi chaiye. I am really sorry for missing such an important moment of your life. But please, mein bas unehei mana nahi kar paya. They would not have understood and would have mistaken me. Bas isiliye, I had to stay back. Upar se Choti ki shaadi ki baat thi toh…"

[Are you angry Geet…you should be. I am really sorry for missing such an important moment of your life. But please it was just because I could not refuse them. They would not have understood and would have mistaken me. For this reason only I had to stay back. Moreover it was about Choti's marriage so…]

He kissed her on her shoulder and continued as Geet did not react to his words.

"I am feeling very guilty Geet. Sach mein. Trust me. I wanted to be there and it was not because of….not because of Poonam but just because I could not refuse them as what ever relation I have with them.

Please don't be angry. I am really sorry and I promise aage se aisa nahi hoga. I am…"

Kuch meethe pal yaad aaye, palko par ansu chod gaye

phir aaj aapke hone ka ehsaas ka dastak diya

Chod ke jana na tum saans le na payenge hum

kab tum anjani se jani pehchani si ho gayi tum

Geet turned in his embrace and looked at him with tears in her eyes. She could feel his restlessness and his panicked state. She knew he was worried that she may again leave him in anger.

"Aap aise sorry kyon bol rahe ho. I know it was my fault to leave home and go to my parent's house. But we both decided to leave all that behind. Phir, aap kyon pressurize feel kar rahe ho. I never want you to try so hard in making this relationship work. Yeh toh dil se hona chahiye na."

Maan was surprised at her reaction. First of all she understood his unsaid fear of loosing her and secondly he expected her to be angry for not coming to the function because of Poonam's family and could not comprehend her - "Geet…"

She held his collar slightly and jerked him close

"Why are you saying sorry because they were related to Poonam….haan…How does it matter what was your work. Mujhe us se koi farak nahi padta. Yes I am angry that you missed my ceremony and that is my right and aap ko us ke liye mujhe manana bhi padega. But how can you think that I will be angry just because the reason happened to be something associated with Poonam.

I know my insecurities lead me to take some stupid steps. But my insecurities were never because Poonam had some place in your life. Mujhe us se ya us position se koi shikyaat nahi. I was insecure because I needed my own space and love in your heart and life. I only care for what you feel for me. I never wanted to take her place. I just want my own place. I am your wife and that's it.

So don't even think I am angry because of that or I will leave you and go…samjhe"

Geet left his collar and wiped her tears and again turned facing her back at him.

Maan gulped his saliva partly seeing her anger and partly in relief at her words, understanding the difference that she was just angry at him as his wife and not because of Poonam.

Maan held her from behind – "Acha…toh aap mujhe se isliye naaraz hain kyon ki I missed your function. Ab yeh bhi bata do ki kaise manaun aapko."

[Oh ok…so you are angry with me because I missed your function. Now, please tell this also that how should I pacify you?]

"Mein kyon bataoon"

[Why should I tell?]

Geet sniffed her sob as Maan turned her around. Maan looked at her red nose and pouting lips. He gave his hanky to her and she looked at him as he kept it under her nose. Her lips twitched slightly as she took the hanky and blew in it.

She looked at him with her doe shaped eyes and Maan smiled at her tantrums. He held his ears "Sorry Jaan…kaam mein phas gaya tha….maaf kardo na."

[Sorry Jaan…I got stuck in work…please forgive me na]
