TDP had a big opening because of:

Great trailer that caught everyone's eye, boldness, super hit song (Ooh La la), Emraan Hashmi, hype, promotions, and the fact that Vidya Balan was doing such a role. You can't deny that people weren't like OMG Vidya is doing THIS...and that too after NOKJ? Shock factor leads to curiosity. It was only after this that people realized...oh shit this movie has a story too (albeit a flawed one) which led to it being such a big success.

You gave the credit only to Emraan and ignored Vidya. Why did the whole industry go batshit crazy prasing Vidya like anything for the opening? Surely she must have had SOME sort of contribution?

That's my point. I'm not atually saying Vidya has some mind-boggling star power..but for a film that centered all on her, her character, surely she must have excited people. Everyone was well-aware that she was the center of attraction. The credit can't be taken away from her totally.

Now lastly Kahaani. 😆 Did it have a hit item song to get single screens attracted? No. Did it even have a chartbuster song? No. Did it have a hyped director at the helm? Hell no. Did it have any sex/sleaze/boldness? No. It had a heavily pregnant VB. It wasn't even that hyped. Was it even expected to cross 10 crores at the BO on opening day? Nope. Its eventual success was mind-boggling for the industry.

Surely you know what kind of films get big openings and which ones don't. 😆 Anways, I wasn't even saying anything against Heroine in this thread..I was solely talking about TDP based on what I knew and remembered... clearly I got some things wrong there but no problem.

And, I feel like the hype about Vidya AFTER the movie released was totally neglected. I literally don't remember much gajabaja about Emraan Hashmi after it released.

Vidya dared to be different, simply put, and that is what worked.

Kareena will hopefully see the same success with Talaash, because that role seems like she's trying something that hasn't been done much before.

Dude, I was tired of watching her in films that did well. This time we got to see her really blow people away! 99% of reviews have said that Kareena SAVED the film from sinking. She's the only reason to watch it.

Even a harsh critic like Raja Sen said that she does more than her peers can do.

That is probably the biggest compliment. What more can we want?

If Heroine was a GOOD FILM, without a doubt it would be a hit. Tis the era of social media. Good WOM does wonders.
