My life is good without a man: Preity Zinta
The vivacious actress Preity Zinta, who was once in a serious relation with businessman Ness Wadia, now feels that being independent is the best thing. The actress has turned into a producer and is all set to release her first film 'Ishkq in Paris'. In a candid chat with DB Star Preity talks about her film, Salman, being friends with Aishwarya Rai, Shah Rukh Khan and her upcoming book.
What prompted you to be a producer?
It was difficult being a producer. We were shooting in extreme cold weather. This is not a complete change, if we look at it, I became an actor and now the next step is getting into productions. But it's a lot of hard work, I have a new found respect for producers because technically its like a thankless job. We faced a lot of hardships will making this film. It was a mix of fun and tough days.
What you have to say about the plot of the film?
It's a romantic comedy set in Paris. Its a movie about today, 2012. It has a message, I have always said a film should be entertaining and people should take something back from it. I don't have problems with mindless entertainment but I don't like putting my name in that mindless entertainment. I wouldn't mind to be a part of one but I can't produce it. I hope people will connect to it.
Salman Khan is in the song, Shah Rukh Khan is also your friend. Why didn't you approach him to do a cameo in the film?
Salman didn't give me a chance to go to any other actor. I went to him he saw the song and took a brief of the film from me and agreed for it. He adjusted all the dates and in between gave me a few days for the song. He is like a trump card for my film. And I'm one actress in the industry who is friends with all the stars but I cant tell all of them to do cameos in my film (chuckles).
Who is your best friend in the industry?
Aishwarya Rai is a very good friend. We always like to hang around together. We never spoke in open about our friendship as we didn't wanted stories to go around.
Why did you opt to make a film with Prem and not any other director?
Prem's energy is very good. His first film didn't do great business but I have full faith in him as he has that drive to work hard. It's a medium budget film and I can say that it has come out really well. I didn't want to work with a big director as it is scary to work with blockbuster directors. He is a very nice and sweet director. I used to follow whatever he told because as an actor that's my duty. I believe that a film is a director's vision and people should not interfere as many cooks spoil the broth.
You also have a new male lead in the film. Comment
Rhehan has done a nice job. When I met him for the first time he was very bulky but in one month's time he had a fit body. He is a good actor and the best part in him is that he wants to learn new things. He has been very open and observant about things. In the beginning, I had to tell him certain things but today he does everything on his own.
You didn't have apprehensions to turn a producer and then act in that film?
I am a very competitive person. I do things to prove to myself and not to the world. I have a habit in me that whenever people tell me not to do a certain thing I get more hell bent on it and have to do it. For eg. Cricket was one thing people told me not to get into. Also, I never wanted to be an actress but later I went into it because it had challenges.
What's much better being single or in a relationship?
I'm waiting for my next business and not dating anyone. For now I'm just concentrating on my work and production house. My life is good without a man. Now, I feel there is a right time for everything and my right time will come soon. I'm enjoying my independence and happy the way my life is progressing.
Tell us something about your book.
The book will have all the fake articles published about me across all the newspapers. This will have explanations of each article and also who wrote it with the Journalist name. I want to clear all the wrong stories written about me. My mother reads those and gets upset which is very unfair. In future, I don't want my kids to read these articles and feel bad about their mother.
You are working with a newcomer, who do you think from the current generation has the potential to be a superstar?
I feel the media should not tag actors as superstars from their first film. They should be given time to prove themselves. Aishwarya, SRK, Salman are superstars and one person who I think is on his way to the superstar tag is Ranbir Kapoor. He is a superb actor I have seen all his films and should say that he is really good.
