Try To Remember Me …

Part 1

While taking deep breaths and ironing her dress with her hands in an attempt to straighten it Bani walks towards the entrance of the huge hotel that is standing in front of her. A couple of weeks back she had applied for the job of waitress at this hotel. She never thought she would come in, as they only hire the best of the best. So it was no wonder she jumped in a circle when she received an invitation for an interview.

While mumbling encouraging words to herself she closes her eyes and prays to God that she will get this job. No one else but her knows how hard she needs it. Needs the money that she will earn by it to provide her sisters with the best she can. Her sisters, the light with which she sees the road, the beat that her heart plays all day long, Rano and Pia, her life, pride, dignity and selfrespect. She promised her father at his deathbed that she will take care of her sisters and make sure they don't fall short of anything. And now she is not planning to fail that promise, but in contrary she will do whatever she can to keep it to the fullest. A manly voice brings her back to reality. 'Excuse me miss, if you don't mind, your blocking the way.' Bani turns around to be stunned to see a middle age man standing who is accompanied by a beautiful lady. She quickly averts her eyes and mumbles a shy sorry. They walk past her like a wind. Full power, grace and class. All of the sudden Bani doesn't feel so confident anymore. She is hesitating about turning back and going home, but then tells herself to stop being a loser and go for it.

Without taking her eyes off the mirror Pia yells to her sister and asks her how the interview went. Bani walks into her bedroom and gives her sister a sweet smile. She goes and stands behind her. While putting her hands on Pia's shoulder she assures her sister that it went well and she is now waiting for a call to know if the hotel manager has picked her among the other people who have applied for the job.

'And now my naughty Pia, where did you plan to go looking so beautiful?' Pia gives her big sister a puppy face and asks her if she can go to their college party. As the summer vacation is about to start, there will be a super party to close the college year of 2006. Bani disagrees. She doesn't want her sister to go to any such parties, especially since they've only moved to Mumbai recently and hardly know anybody. But Pia has her own ways to make Bani see reason and after a couple of tries she gets the much awaited approval. She yells and gives Bani a kiss. 'Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I promise I will be back before noon. And don't you worry my new friend Anu will drop me home. She just got a new car for her birthday!' Before Bani is able to say anything else Pia runs out of the house, leaving a speechless and smiling Bani behind.

At the other end of the city Anu runs down the stairs to rush her way to the party too. But before she can jump into her brand new car her uncle parks his car right in front of hers. She looks at the car with fright and as the black glass slowly comes down uncovering more and more of her uncle's grinning face she tries to make up a very good excuse. 'Goodevening my darling Anu. What's the hurry?' He gives her a fake smile, gets out of his car and walks towards her. Anu closes her eyes in order to come up with a good story but fails. Her uncle standing so close to her makes her nervous and scared. She knows that she is not allowed to go out, but she never expected him back home so soon and she figured out that with a bit of luck he woudn't even notice she isn't home. 'Hi … hi uncle. How are you today?', she stammers while she tries to put up a big smile. Jai who feels that his niece is going to faint anytime now tries his utter best not to burst out laughing. He clears his throat and with a very strict face replies that he is doing well and asks her where she is planning to go. 'If I'm not mistaken I've clearly forbidden you to go to any parties. Even better you were not at all allowed to go out after six. Right?' Anu who doesn't know what to say lowers her head in shame and just nods a silent yes. After a little and unconvient silent she puts all her courage together and looks Jai right in the eyes. 'Uncle, I'm sorry, but today our college is throwing a party to close this college year. And please uncle if you let me go I promise to work hard all summer long. I will help at the hotel and not go to any parties and study hard to prepare for the colleges after this summer. And I promise … I promise I won't fail this time and I won't let you down.' Jai feels the giggles coming up while he stares in the big green eyes of his niece. He very slowly nods his head and says: 'Alright Anu. You can go, but I want you home early. And don't let me catch you on page 3 tomorrow moring being all drunk or doing something stupid.' Anu can't suppress a smile. She quickly promises to behave herself. Jai gives her a you-better-watch-out-look and walks away. Before he disappears into the huge mansion he turns around and says to his niece with a big smile 'Anu! Don't think that the crossedfingers you were putting behind your back, will discharge you from you promise. I'll make sure you will work hard this summer. You will be working directly under my supervision! Did I make myself clear?' The big smile on Anu's face vanishes as quick as it came and with a red head she drives off.

Part 2

Bani quickly puts down the heavy tray and runs towards the chef who is calling her. 'Yes sir, did you call me?' It's her first day at work and she hardly gets a chance to take a breath. She has been running since morning. Her chef doesn't bother to look at her and keeps cutting vegetables. 'Bani mr. Ranveer just called and ordered tea, coffee and cold drinks and something to go with it for a meeting that is taking place late this afternoon. It is important that everything is organized and looks superbly. Mr. Walia is expecting important people. The meeting will take place in the Taj Mahal wing. Since miss Pooja has fallen sick today I give you together with Raj the responsibility for this meeting. I know it's you first day, but I don't have a choice. According to you resume you have to be able to pull this off. So please do impress me and don't make mr. Ranveer regret hiring you.' All the while the chef was talking Bani kept her eyes on the vegetables and wondered to herself how the guy managed to cut them so precisely. 'Miss Bani!' Bani startles from the voice and calls herself to order. 'Sure mr. Kapoor. Please don't worry I will manage.' She quickly walks out of the kitchen looking for Raj. Raj is her colleague. She has been introduced to him this morning and he was supposed to show her around. But since she ignore all his flirting attempts he quickly left her aside and went looking for other victims. She walks towards him as he is presenting a red flower to the receptionist. 'Excuse me Raj. I hate to interrupt your romantic moment, but you are summoned to get to the Taj Mahal wing this instant.' Raj who is not at all please by seeing Bani gives her a grumpy look. Bani on the other hand is quite amused. With a grinning face she walks in front of Raj to the meeting hall.

'Uncle?' Ranveer closes the door behind him carefully and patiently waits till his uncle looks up. 'Ranveer. Come in my son. ' Ranveer is glad his uncle is in a happy mood. On the work floor it's not very common to see mr. Walia heartily smiling. 'I'm glad you came in. I was about to call you. Ranveer … you have done a fabulous work with the hotel. I've just received the results of a custumersreserach that was held among our visitors. We have revieced positive feedback and the average grade we've been given is a 9.' Ranveer can't believe his uncle has just payed him a compliment and he can hardly suppress his happiness. He looks like a little boy who gets pets by his grumpy old men. 'That is good news uncle. But all the credit goes to you. For you have made the Walia Hotels one of the best in this country.' Jai smiles shyly and gets out of his chair. He walks towards the window and looks over Mumbai city. 'Hard work my son is not enough to achieve success in life. There is more a lot more needed to achieve your dreams. It is not that easy.' Ranveer feels that his uncle is coming up with one of his boring being-true-to-yourself and holding-to-your-principles speeches. 'Yes, you are right uncle. By the way I hope you didn't forget that we are receiving delegates from England this afternoon.', Ranveer says quickly and prays silently that Jai will grab the bait and forget his speech. Bingo! 'No, no I didn't forget. Is everything ready?' Ranveer doesn't get a chance to reply. 'You go back to your work. I will check if everything is ok and then I will go and rest a little at home. I'll be back in time for the meeting.' All Ranveer can do is nod his head and watch his uncle leave his office with a fast, steady walk. When the coast is clear Ranveer tries to imitate the walk of his uncle while giving instructions to himself how he can imitate him the best. 'Ok Ranveer, bend your knees a little and your shoulders also, but make sure you don't look like a looser. You have to look cool, relax yet powerfull. Ok, now put one hand in you pocket and start walking.' He goes up and down the room and when he finally thinks he got it he turns to leave the office. Only to be surprised that Anita, his uncles secretary is watching him like a statue.

'Raj! Please pay some attention! This hotel won't run out of girls. You can talk to them later!' Bani is irritated by her colleague, her feet are killing her and the ticking clock is making her nervous. She want to impress, want to prove herself, want give a good first-impression. She has always dreamed to run her own restaurant or hotel, but due to circumstances she wasn't able to complete her studies and she started working at a hotel in Mount Abu. The place where she was born and where she grew up. The same place where both her parents died. The place she has to leave behind in order to give herself and her sisters a better future. A future she hopes to build here in Mumbai. The city of life, hope and chances. She has now got the chance to prove herself and grow in the hotel and restaurant business. And she won't let a Raj ruin her plans. 'Raj! Get over here this instant! We are running out of time!' Her colleague seems the least bothered by her calls and ignores her completely. He keeps flirting with a young customer who is the least interested in him. 'Raj!' The voice that calls to him this time makes him freeze to the spot. He slowly turns around to see his worst nightmare standing right behind Bani. It's frightening to see how small and fragile she looks next to the masculine build mr. Walia.

As she puts the key in the door she sees how the lights in the house go one. 'Bani didi? Is that you?' The soft voice of Rano fills the empty and small corridor. As Bani shuts the door behind her she takes off her shoes and walks into the tiny living room. She gives Rano a hug and asks her to get her a bucket with water and salt as her feet are killing her. Tired and lifeless she drops herself on the couch. Rano quickly goes to the kitchen and gets her sister a bucket of water. Bani keeps lying on the couch. Her eyes closed and her mind put to rest. Happy that despite the long and tough day, she managed to do whatever was asked of her. When the same guy who's path she had blocked a couple of days before stood behind her yelling at Raj, she didn't know what to do or where to look. But it seemed like he didn't recognize her. After he had a firm talk to Raj he left again. At the meeting she couldn't take her eyes off him despite all the work she had to do. Something in him draw her attention, but she didn't know what it was. She was impressed by the way he dealt with his guests, warm yet professional. The way he walked, talked, sat and smiled was different from all the other persons in the room. There was definitely something special about this man. Bani noticed that even the ladies that were around thought the same. Mr. Walia didn't get short of female attention, but he had only eyes for the lady that was with him. The same lady Bani saw with him the other day. She assumes that the beautiful lady must be his wife. The meeting was a success and Bani made sure she heard all that was said and discussed. She has learned a lot through her work. Whenever she serves at an important meeting she makes sure she follows all that is said in order to understand what going on in the business world. She thinks that one fine day when she will run her own business she will use all the information that she is gathering now. As Rano gently massages her feet Bani dozes off dreaming of her own small hotel and restaurant.
