Why don't we make good horror movies?

Our horror movies suck, plain and simple. They hardly shock or frighten us, even a Director like RGV falters in Bhoot (in 2nd half). I wonder why don't we make greater no of horror movies and those which are made are bakwaas! Shayad ki koi aisi Hindi Horror movie hai jise dekhkar darr laga ho.

Compared to us Hollywood or even Japanese produce real quality horror flicks. Esp Japanese are master at this, their some of their horror movies are really frieghtening. I simply love them. 😲

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J-Horror

J-Horror is a term used to refer to Japanese contributions to horror fiction in popular culture. Whereas American modern day horror films tend to rely heavily on special effects and a multitude of sub-genre (i.e. slashers, demons, extraterrestrials, etc.), J-horror tends to focus on psychological horror and tension building (anticipation), particularly involving ghosts and poltergeist. Certain popular J-Horror films are based on manga (e.g. Tomie, Uzumaki and Yogen). Many contain themes of folk religion such as: possession, exorcism, shamanism, precognition, and yokai.

Notable Japanese horror films

Examples of this genre are (those I have seen are in bold):

Audition (aka dishon) Cure Dark Water (aka Honogurai Mizu No Soko Kara) Guinea Pig Infection (aka Kansen) Jigoku Ju-on, Ju-on 2, Ju-on: The Grudge, Ju-on: The Grudge 2, Ju-on: The Grudge 3 Kairo Kakashi Kwaidan Marebito Onibaba One Missed Call (aka Chakushin Ari) One Missed Call 2 Premonition (aka Yogen) Ringu, Rasen, Ringu 2, Ring 0: Birthday Shikoku Tetsuo - The Iron Man (aka Tetsuo) Three... Extremes (aka Saam gaang yi) Voice
  • Uzumaki

(Juon aka The Grudge)
(Dark Water)

Any horror movie fans here? The question remains why can't we make good frieghtening horror movies? BTW, do watch these movie if you want.😆

Koreans also make good horror movies.

Good Points Vishesh! But I don't think Budget is a problem, Japanese make the best horror flicks and their budget is comparable to our movies. And also if you watch their Ringu/Ju'on/Dark water, there is hardly any special effects used.

In India there are supposedly NO 'quality horror' movies becoz the daily Life itself is a Big Horror!

Battling with adulterated food, contaminated water, synthetic milk, spurious medicines, struggle to get into bus/train, long queues in hospitals & for bill payments etc that it burdens & exhausts a person so much that watching a movie is for relaxation and acts an escape mechanism.

May be thats why some of the horror movies/TV shows were more hilarious than scary. 😆

Our horror movies lack a major psychological element - fear of the unknown.

Plus, as realitybites mentioned, daily life is a horror, so they try to make us laugh by making the ghost sing a song! 😆

Abhijit ji, I too hate normal run-of-the mill Hollywood horror flicks like The Exorcist, they are too explicit, too much bloodshed, gore...the fear factor is missing. SAW is a prime example. I suggest you (and everyone reading this 😆 ) watch Ringu/Ring-o: Birthday/Dark Water/Ju-on The Grudge...the best thing about them is that there is not even a drop of blood IIRC. Or you can watch the Hollywood Remakes too..

Ringu = The Ring
Dark Water = Dark Water
Ju-on = The Grudge

I agree, Hollywood and other movies are much more horror like than our Hindi movies. However, Bhoot was a good movie...esp. because they did not include any songs in the movie, it did feel a bit horror like. But, as much as the horror level of this movie may be higher than the Desi movies standard, its nothing compared the English movies. I think one of the things that may be missing in these movies is that there isn't much goriness in the movie. Not to say that goriness makes the movie a horror film, as many horror ones are w/o any such bloodshed, except the fear of it happening throughout the movie. But... I guess that makes it a bit scary.😕

Hehe, I don't think I made much sense...😆

Sweet_kp, watch any of the movies that I have recommeded. They have almost nil goriness but I bet you would close your eyes many times while watching them. Goriness isn't required a bit to frieghten someone..it is the atmosphere, the fear of unknown, things you can't see, the BG music, camera angles, acting, makeup, and finally Story.

hehe, i do know that SolidSnake 😳 I was talking about Hindi movies and was trying to think what would make our horror films much more scary. 😆 Sorry I made that confusing.

Psychopathic movies do make up scary movies. Movies like the one's you mention just play w/ our mind and make us fear the unknown. I hope bollywood finds such a director and writer to make movies of the kind like Sixth Sense or the Ring. 😊 Another movie that I think was an excellent example of a good horror movie was "The others". If you haven't seen it...do check it out. :)

well from the few bollywood horror movies i've seen, I've concluded that the directors try to put too many themes and genres into one movie.

for example if they make a horror movie, the story of the movie always steers towards a couple and survival and conflict they face which takes the horror element of the movie away. If they made a horror movie, they should make it short and to the point. Horror should be the main element in the movie not 'love' between two people.

Indian horror movies could still have songs, but not for 3 minutes with people dancing!!!! They could use them when scences are altered and then later release the album for the movie.

To finish 😛 I think horror movies aint always scary nowadays in general. Yes they make you jump etc but some are tooo predictable, however some are just ace 😃

Has anyone watched final destination (its hollywood movie 😳 )
