Chapter 58: A Splinter and a Kiss... Maybe More
Rajeev had to admit, he had never really seen his boss so distracted as now. In fact, Arnav Singh Raizada was so distracted that he had not seen his beloved sister, Vaibhavi Singh Raizada MacDowell, wandering off. Rajeev took the cue as well and to give Arnav and Khushi some much-needed privacy – well, under the guise of that at least – he followed in the direction that Vaibhavi had disappeared.
It wasn't much to call woods, but in a distance, there was a cluster of trees that grew together and he knew that's where Vaibhavi had gone. He turned back to check briefly and when he was sure that Arnav was still staring at Khushi even with little Jay in between them, he smiled to himself before walking into the relative cover offered by the trees.
He found her behind one of the trees soon enough, although she was leaning against it with one of her knees bent trying to pull something off of the arch of her right foot.
"I am starting to think that it's me that makes you so accident- prone." He said and saw her hand still at her foot.
She didn't look up at him or acknowledge him in any way aside from her absolute stillness as he walked towards her.
When he knelt by her side and took her foot onto his bent knee, she was forced to grab onto his shoulder for support. Both her feet were without slippers and there was a tiny splinter that he could see just by the arch of her foot. It took a few seconds, but he managed to pull it out.
"There we go." He said with a smile and looked up to find her watching him intently...
Her eyes were ablaze with an intensity that was all the stronger because she said not a word.
His smile disappeared and he held her gaze as he raised himself up to standing.
She barely blinked as she watched him straighten up to his full height.
Her eyes were still on his as he put his hands on either side of her and leaned in.
"You've ruined my sleep." She whispered suddenly as her eyes closed and her neck arched.
He couldn't resist and he leaned down to nuzzle the soft pulse that was erratically beating beneath the soft skin that was next to his lips.
"How?" he murmured as he trailed his lips up her neck.
"Half the time I lie in my bed dreading that you might climb up that wall onto my balcony again and the other half of the time, I lie there wishing that you would..."
He nipped her earlobe and she gave a throaty gasp as her arms reached up around his neck and her fingers clenched into his hair.
He smiled into her neck. "Nowadays I have this most irrational thought that seizes me almost hourly at work when I imagine that it's a good idea to go into your brother's office with absolutely no reason aside from a death wish just to see if you have come for one of your impromptu visits."
He dropped feather-light kisses along the line of her shoulder as she said, "I live in the constant fear that AJ will be able to see right through me now. That if he saw me in the same room with you, he would be able to tell right away that something was amiss from my reaction to you. You don't have to worry as much; you are the master of the poker face..."
"Oh come on..." he said, cutting her off, lowering the sleeve of her white tee and dropping a kiss on just the tip of her shoulder, just over where there was small dark circle of a birthmark. He felt the tiny jerk of her shoulder in response... An unexplained warmth spread through him at discovering that she had such an intense response to him and he caught her around the waist to raise her onto her tip-toes as he took her lips in a kiss.
He pulled back before he lost control and saw that she was holding onto him, her eyes closed and her full lips bearing evidence of his passion. He had never imagined that someone with as strong a personality as hers could yield with such abandon.
"Since when have I ever had a poker face where you were concerned? If I had, he wouldn't find the need to warn me off from you every chance he gets." He said before he dropped a kiss on the tip of her chin.
"He does?" she asked in a hazy whisper before her eyes suddenly snapped open.
"Oh my God! Arnav! He'll kill you if he finds you here with me!" She exclaimed as if the thought of the outside world had only just truly intruded.
"Go go go!! I will come out after you are gone!" she said, trying to push him out.
"You go first. I will come out after you." He said in answer and when it looked like she was going to protest, he leaned down and pressed his lips against hers. When he pulled back, he spoke before she could. "I won't go out before you do. With you track record, you might find yourself with another splinter on your foot and then they will have to send a search party here to get you. Don't make me worry and go now."
Just as she turned to go, he stopped her and pulled her back to him. "Why doesn't the Raizada mansion have an alarm system?" he asked.
She stood still for a moment in his hold before she gave a wide smile and he felt his heart thud... hard.
"I disabled it." she told him with a wink before pulling his hands away from her and jumping up to kiss his cheek. When she landed on the ground, she picked up her sandals and took off running, which only lasted a few seconds before she paused and mouthed, "Shit".
He had after all just pulled a splinter out of her foot. Running wasn't exactly recommended.
She turned back towards him just before she was at the last tree before the clearing.
He smiled leaning against the same tree where he had kissed her.
She smiled back before turning around and limping forward.
