What an uplifting story Chitrashi! Kudos to your mom! What your mother did was a very brave step indeed.

We may talk a lot, but things are pathetic even till date. I know how my uncle literally looted the to be DIL's family when he got his son married last year! 🤢 He still keeps demanding things from them, from expensive suits to even expensive suitcases to pack those suits! Car, flat, gold rings, furniture, decorative items, jewelry, expensive clothes for himself and his wife and whatnot! They demanded a helluva lot at time of marriage and still demand! In fact, even if there's a function in my bhabhi's family, my uncle expects her family to shower them with gifts as some shagun!😡

I feel so much for her! Honestly speaking, people who are fathers of just sons, think they have everything can do anything. Hamare paas toh bahut aayega, hum izzat se rahenge..blah blah!🤢 They dream of dowry and extra special treatment from the moment they find they've given birth to a son!

People also keep giving a lot of dowry thinking it will secure their daughter's position in the family or get her respect! Daughters are usually too powerless to speak. Simply keep doing what father, brother or husband or FIL/MIL tell them to do!😲

I have another uncle whose daughter is barely in her teens and he and his wife have been planning and saving up for her lavish wedding/dowry for years now! It's sad how rich people consider giving extra dowry as some show of power!

When my uncle got married our family never asked for dowry from my aunt. But during the wedding ceremony the bride's side (my aunt) gave some dowry (money and jewellery) stuff to my uncle and he refused and passed it to my aunty to keep it with her coz its not his money and he never asked for it, which I thought was really sweet!!

👏
even in year 2012 , a girl may not have the guts to say thse things to prospective in laws.
🤢
Marriages today are more than a ritual, they are a way to show off your wealth, status, style.

You are surely lucky to have parents like that. How I wish How I wish there were more men who were sensitive enuff to understand women are nt machines to slog 24-7 , so many think they r creatures who dont deserve any rest & the primary job is to cook & clean for the family

Ya I agree education & financial independence is more important than marriage.
