The more I watch this show, the more it makes me THINK. What I love is that it does not paint a depressing and bleak picture in front of us, instead it gives a hope and offers a possible solution. Today's episode, yet again, touched a nerve. The stories were distressing, they made me emotional BUT they also awakened all those thoughts that I had shoved into some deep corner of my heart and did not bother thinking about. Female infanticide, child sexual abuse - we have read about them, had heard horrifying stories about them but did we ever think what we can do to curtail such practices and even if we did, did we have the time to do something about it? For most of us are too caught up with our day to day activities to even pay attention to the humane side within us and it is no one's fault here that our lifestyle is such...but in this madness, in this race, is it WORTH it if we don't give it back to our society? NO, SMJ doesn't raise that question - without being judgmental and without pointing fingers and most importantly without making one feel guilty, it creates a FORUM for those of us who do not have that luxury or means to do something about the issues that affect us, although we earnestly yearn to do something about it even if it is not directly concerned with us. As a citizen of this country and as a part of this society, it is my responsibility to contribute to the betterment and welfare of this society - again SMJ doesn't PREACH that, it just puts forth the facts that are not strategically selected to attack the viewers' emotions and yet it manages to project them sensitively with a silver lining, it leaves the decision purely to us audience without being opinionated and without aspiring to be influential. It gives us credit - that we are mature, intelligent enough to understand and are perfectly capable of taking the right decision, keeping the welfare of the society in the view and even if we don't take the "right" decision, it is still fine because SMJ, at the end of the day, respects your opinions.

Coming to today's issue - it is certainly unfair that children have to go through it, it is unfair that the innocence of their childhood is being tainted, it is unfair that most of them have to carry this baggage through their adulthood as well. I would be lying if I said that I did not feel impressed by the lady who said her abuser was the one at fault and that he should be the one to feel guilty and not her 👏. I'd be lying if I said that Harish's story did not shake me from within and made me very deeply emotional and yet, his courage , his confidence to accept it as the challenge his life had thrown at him and fight it, made me feel positive. I have had the fortune of meeting highly inspiring people in my immediate friends' circle and family (my best friend being an inspiration in himself) so it is not new to me but what is different here is the fact that , in some way, I can be a part of it and use that as a tool to create an impact, to contribute to the change in whatever way I can...and I would genuinely like to thank Aamir for putting together such a wonderful show with a brilliant concept, it is surely WORTH waking up early on a Sunday morning , it is surely WORTH one and a half hour of my undivided attention and it is surely WORTH every penny I spend when I vote in the favor of the bill being passed 👏. Having said that, I also have a few questions and concerns- for starters, I want to know about the details of the pending bill in the parliament- what aspects of child sexual abuse it deals with, what kind of indicators/behavior can be defined within the scope of it, what is the proposed punishment and what is the legal process that needs to be followed. I would have liked them to dig a little deep and have a discussion with the NGOs/Social Workers who have been actively involved in working towards this cause to determine whether the bill in the parliament is sufficient and is enough to tackle this issue. While I am certainly for the bill being passed (I am sure I can rely on Aamir's knowledge of it even though I am not totally aware of the content), I would have also liked to see it openly discussed so that we know what is in there, what are its repercussions and if any amendments are required. Not that I am complaining here but I would have liked the focus to have been on child abuse in broader perspective, not just child sexual abuse in particular. In view of the recent Baby Falak incident, we would need laws on that front as well. But I can see where Aamir was coming from, he wanted to deal with CSA particularly because it is the kind of issue that does require a dedicated episode. However, in the future, if not this season, at least in the next season, I'd like some light thrown on child abuse (violence against children- physical or emotional) as well.

Those are my two cents on the show in general and today's episode in particular.I would love to read everyone's views on today's episode.

Ah! I was hoping to come by some post on today's episode - saw your ID and didn't have to go look further. So I'm going to wait up Nur to wake up and find some links (it's not me being lazy but plain incompetent since I spent a good hour and a half last week in vain before she came to aide, I know better now) - but anyway, a post until then.

I want to echo an interest in being shown child abuse in a more generic sense too, apart from its very narrow but deep rooted sexual aspect. Somehow, from the parts of the world I have known and seen and lived in, the picture in the general sense is even more dim, even if I cannot possibly make such claims about India without knowing the figures.

As for your critique of the episode in particular, got to watch it before I return. The show in general, yes, we've more or less all agreed about the awakening it inspires. The "forum" as you rightly word it, which serves an intermediate not between the victim and justice institutions, but between the victim and an audience that needs to change its thought process altogether, because repeating myself from last time, getting some specific cases justice is only a short term consequence. What needs to be attacked and reestablished is the wave of mass opinion! In this case, I'm assuming, the desensitization of the society is probably a greater part of the evil, than a majority of the people being involved in the crime as such. Awakening from a passive overlooking mode becomes even more necessary...

How is SMJ going to make a differnce when people and even the educated youth is more worried abt Parivar ki izzat rather than justice or acceptance of the crime against a child. Hypocrisy is embedded in our systems and those who speak out rather face the wrath of shunning.

It is just heart breaking to think about it . I know child abuse is rampant in many countries and our country is no exception but it really hurts to hear about it and even more so, when we feel helpless, like there is nothing much we can do about it.

WORD JZ WORD! I could not have said it better myself 👏 The aim of the show is evident - to create an IMPACT and get the passive citizens to actually WAKE UP and think but it is not being patronizing in its approach. Doing something for the society is not just the job of social workers and NGOs, it is our responsibility too. WE live in this society so it is our job as well and though we are aware of it on some level, we rarely get the time and opportunity to DO something about it and I am glad that this show at least tries to be that means. By sending an SMS and casting my vote in the favor of the bill being passed, I am not saying that I have done something great nor am I preening that I have accomplished something. It is a drop in the ocean but then every drop counts and the ocean would be devoid of even that drop if it is missing. And most importantly, when I go to sleep I can think to myself "I have done something worthwhile today".

And yes, focus on a few selective issues does not solve the bigger problem or all the problems in the world and SMJ does not even intend to solve anything but making an EFFORT at least, to do something about it, that does not hurt, right? And even if we don't gain anything out of it, we certainly don't lose anything, do we? I concur with you JZee, it is important to begin with the revolution of thought than attack the issue itself.

I agree hypocrisy is rampant in our society but not everyone is like that. We certainly cannot change the attitude of everyone, especially such people but taking that step to fight it is surely worth it rather than giving up. Harish's case today, threw light on something very important- while his mom's initial nonchalance because of the fear of the society was appalling, it also served as a lesson to the others who are perhaps doing the same and she did realize her fault. Who knows, SMJ might give that push, that confidence to someone out there and veer them in the right direction.
We can never reach our goal if we always think about the result and giving up never really solved anything 😊, it is up to us to determine whether we intend to learn something from it or choose to get bogged down.

Reserved for Episode 2...
I am yet to watch the first episode as well. Had been reading the reviews in this forum. In fact I was looking forward to reading one of your (all) posts about the first episode on female foeticide. Unfortunately the Middle East timings differ and it airs at 9 pm Sunday
JZee I had checked if you and others had posted your views on the first episode because the topic was too close to my heart.
Though its off topic here (since you are discussing about the second episode), I really would like to know your views on episode 1.
I had read about the Haryana Govt's initiative to seek IDs from women enrolled for prenatal and postnatal care at hospitals. There is already an act in force in India, the Prenatal Diagnostic Technique Act that prevents the sonologists from disclosing the fetal sex to the expectant parents. The solution however rests in the clinicians practicing and abiding by the rule. I could not actually understand how the Photo ID card will serve any purpose.

Zinger, do you know if Nur came by the forum yet? Or if anyone else found links that work in the outside blocked zones?

JZ I don't think I have seen Anu drop by today. Last week, she was mentioning torrent downloads, can you try that?
