Priyanka keeps commitment

Actress Priyanka Chopra's debut film was supposed to be Gandhi, which she had signed opposite Sunny Deol. The project eventually did not proceed and Priyanka managed to get herself Hero as her maiden venture into the industry. That was three years ago and times have changed now as Chopra has managed to make it to the top rung of the industry and Sunny has suffered a setback. Now, the shelved project is set to be revived by director Guddu Dhanoa. And when the director approached her, a modest Priyanka agreed to do the film. With the cast being the same, the name and the plot of the movie have been changed. Whether the pair makes it big now remains to be seen!

Riya Sen: Split personality

Riya Sen has decided to do away with her glam image for the time being at least! The usually glamorous actress will now be seen in a new avatar in Mukta Arts' next venture, Apna Sapna Money Money, to be directed by Sangeeth Sivan. Sen found the role very interesting and she was ready to shed her glam image. "It is a comedy. The role required an Indian look. I took it up as a challenge," says Riya. It is however interesting to note that though she sports a simple look for the film, Sen has shot for two glamorous videos for the same film. "It was a challenge for to me oscillate between two diverse looks at the same time," adds the actress. The actress admits that she always wanted to work with Subhash Ghai. Though pleasantly surprised at the offer, she wasted no time in grabbing the opportunity that came her way.

Rendezvous with India's fastest guitarist!
By MIO Team
Jul 16, 2006, 09:05

Mumbai, July 15 (IANS) He is rated as India's fastest guitarist by music companies and the media. At 22, he is already a star with his antics on stage. But Apernit Singh is waiting for the big break - to make a name in the music world.

A student of Bangalore's Shri Mahaveer Jain College, Apernit's rendezvous with music began at the age of seven when he started playing the guitar that his dad gifted him. There has been no looking back ever since.

'I was always fascinated by the look and romance of carrying a guitar. That's how I started off. The passion grew eventually,' Apernit, also a Hindustani vocalist, told us.

'I have never claimed to be the fastest guitarist. But music companies and the media have rated me the fastest,' he said, not without an air of confidence though.

At a breathtaking speed of 22 notes in 0.76 seconds, Apernit's performances have left audiences spellbound. He has also played a marathon 72 hours of non-stop music over the guitar.

Apernit, who has trained more than 1,000 students to play the guitar in the past four years, is now gunning for an entry into the Guinness Book of World Records.

He has composed more than 50 jingles for various brands like Canara Bank, IT Kerala, Haywards 5000, Britannia, Green Label, Gilbeys, Perfetti and All India Radio.

'I experiment to the fullest with the guitar. But it is not just for the sake of experimenting. Music should come as a passion. I am not looking to prove a point,' he said.

'I do not stick to any particular genre. I am open to rock, pop, jazz, blues, Indi-pop, Bhangra,' said the Gwalior-born son of a property dealer.

After making waves in the industry circles, Apernit is not averse to Bollywood assignments.

He has already come out with an album 'Dhundhoon Kahaan' and has bigger plans for the future.

Although Apernit's dream is to play for the famed G3 - Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and John Petrucci - he has also kept alive his desire to do a professional guitarist's course from the Berkley's School of Music in the US.

'I was sidelined by many in the industry. Now those very people want me to play for them. So I guess I do not have to prove anything but just play my music,' Apernit noted.

Clash of the Titans!

Aditya Chopra's 'Dhoom 2', Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani's 'Don', J P Dutta's 'Umrao Jaan' and Shrirish Kunder's 'Jaaneman' – are the four big banner films with four superstars Abhishek Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Hrithik Roshan and Salman Khan all fighting hard to grab your attention this Diwali. Nonetheless the four big releases will lead to a big fight in the trade as to who would emerge triumphant. The winner will be the one who with creative satisfaction can also strategies the promotion to fetch the most number of audiences. So filmmakers are making certain that they don't leave any store unturned.

Yash-Raj Films has already postponed the release of 'Dhoom 2' from October 20 to November 24 so that it doesn't clash with 'Don'. Also Aditya Chopra wants to put more efforts on the post-production of the film. As things stand now, 'Don', 'Umrao Jaan' and 'Jaaneman' will get a Diwali release and 'Dhoom' will release on Eid. 'Jaaneman' benefits as 'Dhoom 2' moves back, for it can use the chain of theatres that had been earlier booked for 'Dhoom 2'. Sajid Nadiadwala plans to release the film on October 20 with 1000 prints.

J P Dutta is holding his calm about the release of Umrao Jaan. "As a filmmaker, I believe in releasing my film when it is ready. The prospect of other films releasing at the same time, as mine has never troubled me. There are more films and theatres, with an adequate audience for each film," he says.

Sidhwani, producer of Don casually puts in, "Shah Rukh, Abhishek and Hrithik are all big stars. So there never was a question of a clash. A good film will work, irrespective of other films releasing with it. We will devise our marketing strategy, let others work out theirs."

Konkona doing a tough job

It's not very easy to be an actress. Other than facing the pangs of the media, there are many strenuous things that you've to oblige for a role. Konkona Sen Sharma will fully assure you that. For her recent film 'Omkara' she was made to make dung cakes. "I am playing a village woman in the film and director Vishal Bhardwaj wanted me to do some action in the background. So he gave me a lump of fresh cow dung, and asked me to make cakes from it. Though it was a background shot, I had to repeat it each time there was a retake. I did it four-five times. Then I saw maggots in the dung, and I just froze. After the scene I wanted to throw up. In fact, I even had a bath with an antiseptic soap," she puts. And how about the love scene that she had to perform with Saif? "I have done love scenes before but this one was more intimate. I wasn't very comfortable, but being a professional, you have to do what's required of you in the film. The scene was shot in a closed area with not many people around."
