Part 5
Next morning Gopi woke up later than her usual time. She looked around for her Ahemji but he was not in the room. The door to their room was slightly ajar so he might have gone for his morning jog. She was just removing the covers off of her when her maji and kakiji came in the room with a glass of juice.
"Jai Shree Krishna maji, Jai Shree Krishna kakiji." she greeted them both.
Kokila came and sat beside her vahu and placed her hand on her head to bless her.
"Jai Shree Krishna Gopi vahu. How are you feeling now?" she asked, worry and fear obvious in her eyes.
"I am feeling fine maji. I am sorry maji, I did not mean to worry you."
Gopi knew her maji loves her like her daughter and if she were to leave this house she would miss her maji the most apart from her Ahemji.
Koki put the juice on the bedside table and took her vahu's hand in hers.
"Gopi vahu it is natural for me to worry for you. I know things have been very stressful for you for past few days but now everything will get better."
Hetal, who was sitting on the other side of Gopi agreed with Kokila.
"Kokila is right Gopi, you have been through so much these past few days, you need to relax and not stress over things. Everything will be fine now. Kanaji has answered all your prayers."
"Gopi vahu didn't I tell you that Ahem would recognize your true worth one day? I know with what happened in the past makes it hard for you to trust his feelings but believe me, Ahem has come to care you like I always wanted him to."
Gopi's fondest dream of being loved by Ahemji was coming true yet she hesitates to accept the fact that her Ahemji is in love with her. She has lost count of times when she thought her Ahemji had finally come to care for her only to be dealt with a big blow each time. She was afraid to hope anymore. The past she had almost forgotten reared it's ugly head when Anitaji parroted accusations. "I will never love you. You are not even worth my hatred." How did she ever forget those words?
Kokila handed her the juice glass.
"Gopi vahu drink this juice then get ready. Ahem should be coming back from his morning jog soon also."
Gopi took the juice and drank only half of it. Kokila was still worried for her vahu's state of mind. Her son had mistreated her so much in the past that now her vahu was weary of taking everything at face value. May be Anita coming back into Ahem's life will bring positive change to their lives making the bond between the two stronger. She prayed to Kanaji to make everything better in her son and vahu's life.
Kokila and Hetal had just got up to leave when Kinjal and Rashi walked into the room. Kokila glanced at her daughter and Rashi, suspecting they had a lot to do with her vahu's current condition but she did not voice her doubts.
"Kinjal shouldn't you be returning to your home now? It was fine for you to stay last night because it was so late but Dhavalji must be waiting for you. You should start heading out."
Kinjal firmed her mouth but did not oppose her mother.
"Ji ma I am leaving soon. I just wanted to see how Gopi bhabhi is feeling."
By the way her mom looked at her, Kinjal knew her ma did not believe her but she just nodded her head as her mom walked out with kakiji.
Kinjal and Rashi looked at each other. They had talked about how to keep from getting in trouble with Ahem and thought best thing to do was talk to Gopi. They both approached the bed slowly.
"Gopi how are you feeling now? You know you scared me last night."
Rashi was first to reach her and wore a worried look on her face for her sister. She sat beside Gopi and patted her hand.
"Ha bhabhi you scared us all. Are you feeling better now?" Kinjal asked sitting on the other side of Gopi.
Gopi looked at her cousin and sister-in-law wryly and wondered what was up with them. Usually they can't stand the sight of each other but today they were both together and what was more surprising they were both worried for her.
"I am feeling fine now," she answered them and waited for them to come to the point. She had a feeling this was not a friendly visit.
Rashi wanted to talk to Gopi before Ahemjiju came back and caught her in the room with Gopi.
"Gopi why did you tell Ahemjiju I read that letter to you? Now Ahemjiju is upset with me and I am afraid he will tell Jigarji and he will be mad at me," she said with a sad face.
"And bhabhi why would you tell bhai I ordered the necklace? He thinks I ordered it in your name to set you up," Kinjal said angrily.
Before Gopi could answer Kinjal or Rashi, a voice from the doorway had them scrambling off the bed nervously. They quickly moved away as far as they could from the bed.
"I can see my small warning did not do the trick last night. Looks like I will have to spell things out for you two," Ahem said with a threatening voice.
He came into the room and stood between the bed and the place where Kinjal and Rashi were standing.
The stand was strategic to emphasize the point that Gopi was no longer alone and if they wanted to hurt Gopi they would have to go through him first.
"Gopi did not tell me anything Kinjal. Just like she did not tell me about Umang and your relationship. I found about that on my own...," replied Ahem whilst looking on at Kinjal. "... and about the letter too, Rashi...," continued Ahem who was now looking at Rashi, "... so too for the necklace ... also on my own," now looking back at Kinjal.
"I had suspected that you may have something to do with the necklace business but was not yet sure. Now you just confirmed it for me," finished Ahem.
Kinjal turned pale at her brother's glare towards her.
"Kinjal this is your final warning. I now know that you were behind the letter and the necklace. If you don't like Gopi fine, don't ever come here again. If you want to keep your relations with me then learn to respect Gopi and acknowledge her as my wife and your bhabhi, otherwise stay away from us."
Gopi could not believe what she was hearing. Kinjalben was the one who ordered the necklace that had led to the destruction of her marriage. She closed her eyes as the realization hit her. She was better off not knowing the truth but in a way this also tells a lot about Ahemji's feelings for her in those days.
Ahem didn't dare look at Gopi. He knew the next truth is going to break her heart but he needed her to realize that as much as she cared for the two women standing in front of him they didn't give a damn about her. He turned to Rashi next.
"Rashi hear me loud and clear if you EVER try to hurt Gopi like you have recently and I am sure in the past, I will tell Jigar and kakiji all about what you did to split the family. I am appalled at your behavior Rashi for hurting the very person who brought you back in this family and the one who helped you to get close to your husband."
He started to turn away and turned back.
"Don't test me on this Rashi. Gopi did not tell me about the letter but I can pretty much conclude that you are the only one who could have read that letter to her and lied to her about it and ... I know why too. If Jigar comes to know this he will also put two and two together and come up with a correct conclusion."
Ahem turned at the knock on the door and was surprised to see Anita standing just inside the door. He realized she heard him warning Kinjal and Rashi by the expression of disgust on her face when she looked at Kinjal and Rashi.
Ahem turned to Anita.
"I am sorry that you were mislead by these two but whatever they have told you about Gopi is a lie. They caused you unnecessary hurt by telling you that I still have feelings for you. I am telling you the truth when I say that I have moved on with my life."
Ahem glanced towards the bed where his life was sitting. Her eyes full of unshed tears at what she just witnessed. He moved to sit next to her on the bed, took her hand in his and squeezed it to reassure her. He turned to face the three women again.
Anita realized in her grief over the break up of her marriage that she had started to believe that Ahem still cared for her when the truth was he had never indicated that he still had feelings for her. She saw the expression on his face when he glanced at his wife and realized she never had a chance with him. She moved to the end of the bed and looked at Gopi and Ahem with sincerity in her eyes.
"Ahem I wanted to apologize to you and Gopi for my behavior these past two days. I have no excuse for it, except may be the grief over my marriage breaking up made me see what is not there. I hope you forgive me," Anita said sadly.
Anita turned to Gopi.
"You are very lucky to have husband like Ahem. He loves you very much, I don't think I have ever seen that kind of love in his eyes for me."
Gopi was afraid to turn her head and look at her Ahemji. She was being hit with one surprise after another and could not take one more shock. She wanted to tell Anitaji that none of it is true but she looked on at her in disbelief. How can she believe his feelings for her are that of love? When he told her he hated her and that she would never have a place in his heart he had spoken with so much conviction that she had believed him and did not force herself on him.
Anita turned to Ahem.
"You were right in what you said last night. You and I would not have lasted as a married couple. Even when we were together I was the one who always pushed for things and after marriage we would have clashed over every little thing. You are lucky to have someone like Gopi as your life partner to calm your personality."
Anita moved close to Gopi and Ahem and gave them a genuine smile letting them know she had no hard feelings and hope that they can forgive her for her behavior. She extended her hand to Gopi.
"Again I am sorry for hurting you Gopi. I am ashamed of what I said about you last night."
Gopi did not hesitate to place her hand in Anita's.
"Anitaji it is okay. I am also sorry for coming between you and Ahemji. If I had known the truth I would have never agreed to marry him."
Gopi could feel Ahemji staring at her but could not look at him.
"No, Gopi don't apologize," Anita said holding Gopi's hand tightly to make her look up at her, "You and Ahem were meant to be together so don't think you came between us. It is me who came between the two of you."
Anita let go of Gopi's hand and smiled at her and Ahem.
"Goodbye Ahem, goodbye Gopi. I wish you and Ahem the best and all the happiness in the world."
Anita turned towards the door and was surprised to see Kinjal and Rashi both still standing there listening without any remorse for what they did to her, Gopi and Ahem. She gave them one last disgusting look and walked out of the room.
There was a tensed silence in the room after Anita left. Ahem waited for Kinjal and Rashi to also apologize but when neither moved he also gave them a disgusting look. He was about to order them out of the room when he heard someone knock on the door. He looked up to see Jigar standing by the door.
Jigar came in with Gopi's medicine, gave them to his bhai then turned towards his wife.
"Rashi can you get my breakfast, I need to leave for office soon."
He did not wait to see if she did what he asked of her and turned back to his bhai and bhabhi.
"How are you feeling now bhabhi?"
Jigar could not meet his bhabhi's eyes. He felt ashamed at what his bhabhi went through because of Rashi. He had been on his way to give his bhai the medications when he heard his bhai lambasting Rashi for hurting Gopi bhabhi. He had froze in place hearing his bhai reveal things he would have never known if he hadn't heard them from his bhai.
Gopi studied her devarji for a moment before answering him but could not figure out what was different about him today.
"I am fine devarji. Thank you for bringing my medicine."
Jigar finally looked at her bhabhi straight in the eye. "No thanks necessary bhabhi. It is the least I can do after what you and bhai did for me."
He wished Rashi could understand how lucky she was to have a loving sister like Gopi bhabhi.
"Bhai did you need anything else?" he asked Ahem.
Ahem shook his head. He also realized Jigar looked a bit sad and wondered what had happened to put that look on his face. He looked just as sad as when he looked upon finding out the truth about Rashi few months back.
Jigar hesitated before walking out of his bhai's room. When he got to his room, he stopped and composed himself before going in the room. He had a lot of thinking to do about what he heard before going in his bhai's room with the medications.
Ahem walked into his room and saw that Gopi was not on the bed when he came back to the room after getting the file from the study. At first he panicked but realized she must be getting ready. He had just opened a file to read over when he heard the bathroom door open and Gopi came out towel drying her hair. She immediately reached for her pallu when she saw him in the room.
Ahem dropped the file on the table and walked up to her. He stopped her before she placed the pallu on her head.
"Leave it off. I don't want you to put on a pallu every time you see me."
Ahem watched a droplet of water slide down her temple to her pink cheek and traced it with his finger.
"You look beautiful like this and from now on I don't want you to hide your face from me."
He could see Gopi was uncomfortable with not wearing the pallu and knew that it will take her a while to get used to it.
"I will get your clothes out if you want to go ahead and take a shower."
She glanced at him once then moved towards the mirror slowly.
Ahem turned to watch her for a moment then turned and walked into the bathroom to get ready for the day.
As he worked Ahem's mind kept drifting back to Gopi all day. He knew she was not yet convinced that his feelings for her are genuine. He did not blame her for not believing her. He was the one who had always reminded her that she will never have a place in his heart and their marriage was in name only.
How many times had he told her he would never love her? How many times had he accused her of acting to make herself look good in the eyes of his family? He knew he had lot to make up for and just the way he had convinced her he hated her in the past, he will have to convince her he loves her now.
That evening Ahem stopped at a jewelry store to buy a nice gift for Gopi. Fifteen minutes later he came out of the shop happy with the purchase he made. He couldn't wait to give it to Gopi.
Ahem walked into the house with anticipation. He stopped by the kitchen before going to his room. He saw Gopi taste whatever she was making. She made a face when the dish didn't taste right and reached for something behind her but stopped when she saw him by the door.
"Ahemji you? When did you come?" she said reaching for her pallu.
Ahem walked into the kitchen, leaned against the counter and crossed his arms across his chest to stare at her.
Gopi couldn't hold his gaze and looked away wondering why he was looking at her so intently. She felt the pallu slide off her head and tried to catch it but froze when her hand was caught by another hand. She turned at looked at her Ahemji with apprehension.
"I told you not to wear the pallu when you see me anymore." Ahem said to her gently.
He let go of the pallu and just watched her. He wanted to pull her into his arms and hug her to him tightly but he knew this was not the time or the place. He wished he hadn't denied himself the three times she had hugged him.
"I came into the kitchen to ask for a cup of tea. Do you think I can get one?"
Gopi could only nod her head yes. He smiled at her and caressed her cheek with his finger.
"Thanks Gopi, I am going to freshen up. Can you please bring the tea up when it's ready?"
Again she just nodded her head. He gave her one more smile before walking out of the kitchen.
Gopi nervously walked into their room with Ahemji's green tea. She didn't see Ahemji in the room and frowned, she looked toward the bathroom door but it was slightly open to indicate he was not in there either. She put the tea down and turned to go back out but stopped when she saw Ahemji leaning back against the closed doors of their bedroom.
Ahem watched Gopi twist her hands in front of her nervously. He knew her hand was itching to reach for her pallu but she was controlling the urge. He had timed his re-entry back in to the room just right. He slowly walked towards her keeping his eyes on her.
Gopi felt her heart flutter when she saw Ahemji walk towards her with a predatory look. She felt butterflies in her stomach and swallowed nervously. Ahemji had the same look in his eyes that he had on Holi, when he had put the apple down and said he remembered what he wanted to say to her. Her heart had soared to new heights that day and again it was threatening to do the same. She clenched her hands harder to keep from trembling.
Ahem stopped in front of Gopi and took her hand in his. He walked towards the dressing stool and made her sit on it. He then went back to his laptop bag and pulled out the gift box, walked back and kneeled down in front of her.
Gopi automatically started to stand up when he kneeled in front of her.
"Ahemji what are you.."
"Shh...," Ahem shushed her by placing his finger on her lips, and holding her in place to keep her from getting up.
He opened the box and presented the pair of silver payals to her.
"Gopi these are for you." He waited to see her reaction to his gift.
Gopi felt her vision blur by the tears in her eyes. Her Ahemji had bought her a gift by his own will not because he wanted to gift her along with the whole family or because a sales girl thought a sari looked good on her. This was just for her.
Ahem reached up and wiped the tears from her cheeks that she hadn't even realized overflowed out of her eyes. Gopi jumped when he reached for her foot. She moved it out of his reach.
"Ahemji what are you doing? A husband doesn't touch wife's feet," she reminded him.
Ahem smiled at her tenderly at her reminder and reached for her foot again. He didn't let her pull back this time. He placed her foot on his thigh and lifted her sari to expose her delicate ankle. He felt her shiver at his gentle caress of her ankle and felt a similar response in him. His mind flashed back to the day of Holi and his pulse rate increased remembering the special moment.
"Gopi when we are in this room alone, nothing is off limits for you or me. There are no secrets and not restrictions. We are equal in this room."
He took one Payal in his hand and fastened it around her ankle. He then took the other foot and did the same. He placed her feet on the floor and stood up. He held his hand out to her and waited for her to place her hand in his.
Gopi did just that. He pulled her up to stand in front of her.
"Do you like my gift?" he asked her with a gentle voice.
Gopi nodded her head. "They are beautiful. Thank you Ahemji."
"My pleasure Gopi" he said huskily.
Ahem kissed her on the forehead and pulled her in his arms slowly to hug her. He felt her arms go around him automatically. Ahem closed his eyes to savor the moment. Little by little he hoped to make up for each of his past hurt and erase all the bad memories with the good ones.
