Saubhagyavati Bhava anti-hero Karanvir Bohra insists that there is a Viraj in all of us...

Viraj Dobriyal is any woman's worst nightmare come alive. He would lock his wife in a room full of cockroches, beat her up with a leather belt, try snipping her fingers off with a pair of scissors, put her feet in boiling water, and even attempt to kill her parents... all in a bid to terrorise her into loving him.

Now, who wouldn't hate this husband from hell? So, whenever Karanvir Bohra, who plays the anti-hero in Life OK's Saubhagyavati Bhava, is told by people that they can't get themselves to loathe him, he is understandably surprised. "Maybe it's because people realise that Viraj is also a victim of his mental condition; it's in his nature. For him, whatever he does is right.

"But it's amazing to see how a character who is supposed to be hated, comes to be loved by the public. You don't love a Prem Chopra or a Ranjit, now do you?" asks Karanvir, who was in Chandigarh on Thursday to perform in Ila Arun's play Mareechika with wife Teejay Sidhu.

"I believe that on some level, there's a Viraj in every one of us. You also feel that anger and frustration. The only difference is, you won't murder someone in a fit of rage, because you are afraid of the consequences. Viraj fears no one, " declares the 29-year-old.

And how does his wife react to his character? "Well, she's the Viraj of our home," laughs Karanvir.

"On a serious note, in real life, I'm nothing like my character. In fact, many a times I have stopped the shoot to make the men talking in raised voices apologise to the female staff."

Incidentally, it was Dabangg star Salman Khan who inspired Karanvir to get back to television after Shahid Kapoor, Vidya Balan starrer Kismat Konnection (2008) failed to get the boy more lucrative offers in Bollywood. "He made me realise that TV has become bigger than movies. The audience reach is wider and there's more money in TV. And Viraj's is a role that would be any actor's dream. There are so many layers to him..."

And helping him traverse through these layers is his three-and-a-half-years of Kathak training. "It does help when Viraj has to alter his expressions drastically during a scene." The 15 years of theatre he has done with the likes of Satyadev Dubey, Nadira Babbar and Alyque Padamsee couldn't have hurt either. "You don't do it for money; you do it for the sheer love of acting. Nobody is a 'born' actor. You have to work hard to get 'it'."

The conversation drifts toward the actor's upcoming Bollywood release with Pakistani actress Veena Malik - Mumbai 125 kms.

"The movie has been shot completely in 3D. And about Veena, all I can say is that she is a thorough professional," he blushes.

Apart from this, Karanvir will also be seen in Chemistry with Soha Ali Khan and Shreyas Talpade.

Theater is a good medium for actors is good to perform in front of live audience. You have one chance to perfect your script and emotions to the audience there is no cut or edit. I do believe there born actors though who just naturally gifted.

I completely agree the wives are like Viraj Dobrial of the house cause the run there house and family. The husband know the wrath of punishment he'll receive if he don't listen to his wife 🤣

I'm surprised he's been doing theater for 15 years. Wow! Hats off to him man. That just shows the kind of dedication he has towards his craft.

My cousin does theater as well and it's such a great medium to brush up your acting skills. Since you're performing in front of a live audience, there is that much more difficulty and pressure to do well. There's not much room for error in comparison to television or films where you have continuous retakes and shots to perfect yourself.

Hats off to him again.

I also agree on the statement where the writer mentioned you can't hate Viraj. Maybe it has to do with his mental condition but as for me, he's my favorite character in the show and I always look forward to his scenes. Viraj is entertainment.

A fabulous theater artist who manages to keep the audience in edges by his excellent acting skills. Viraj is just special and unique. How many times anyone gets to play a role like that. KVB is awesome in his portrayal. He is quite insightful look at the range of performance oriented roles he played. Kudos to him.

@bold: Ditto. :)

I've seen him play all his major roles on television (thanks to Youtube): Dhruv from Shararat, Prem/UD from KZK, and now Viraj in Saubhagyva - this man picks his roles well. The bad-boy turned passionate lover Prem was vastly different from the very funny and comedic Dhruv. And now there's Viraj. The witty dialogues, the dominating personality, his mental condition - Karanvir has portrayed all his roles so well.

I really like him as an actor.

He's a terrific actor, i hated him as Nakul in Kusum...and even thought i havent seen much of this show, he's doing an amazing job as Viraj and I completely agree with him about tv being the better medium, Bollywood is a craphole these days and talents like KB won't even get a second glance...TV is the better medium with MUCH better actors I just wish scripts and stories would support the actors talent in tv as well
