Hello Hi Bye Bye Navyians!

Its time for the new DOTW for the month of March! (Second week of March to be precise!)

As we all know, the show Navya is at a point where Navya and Anant's financial hurdles have been slightly sorted out. But since this is a Hindi Daily Soap, the lead pair always has to face some sort of problem or the other!

Sugandha Bajpaayee (Anant's mother) has just visited Navya and given her an earful about how everyone is suffering because of Navya's mistake, and how Nimisha's (Anant's cousin sister) marriage is at stake cause they have left the house, and she's made Navya promise to ensure that Anant and Navya will celebrate Holi with the Bajpaayees! And we know for a fact that Navya is gonna heed to her request and make Anant celebrate holi with his family!

****************

This is not a new thing for Hindi Daily Soaps. In most of the shows, it has always been shown that whatever happens, it is the poor and unsuspecting DIL's fault, while the MIL and the bhabhis and other khadoos members of the female lead's sasuraal just taunt her and emotionally blackmail her and accuse her.

But is this correct? Is this unfair treatment of the DILs justified? Today is International Women's Day. Keeping this in mind, I have come up with a question for all of you.

What do you think about the unfair treatment of women in Hindi Daily Soaps? While channels and PHs are certainly coming up with interesting taglines and new concepts and refreshing characters, the majority of the shows (especially the ones that garner the highest TRPs) depict a submissive DIL and a khadoos saas/bhabhi/nanan/etc. Is this "devi maiiya" attitude of the DILs justified? Is the "Komolikka" attitude of the saas/bhabhi/nanan/etc. justified?

I do know that we've begun to see female leads who are loud and outspoken, but we have very few of those. Most of them are still behaving like reincarnations of "devi maiiya" herself!

This DOTW gives you a chance to speak up for the portrayal of Indian Women on the small screen. Share your opinions on the issue, and take this opportunity to make your voice be heard. Who knows, some PH/Channel/CVs may read this and get inspired?

I hope you enjoy this DOTW and there are some healthy and mature discussions that take place! Over to you all now!

Cheers,

Ritchelle

Nice post for woman's day... well speaking about Navya, Navya being correct in her path n as a ideal wife to her hubby dunt want to bring barriers between d family bt barriers itself existed for her frm her sasuraal wale, nevertheless Navya being accused by her MIL nw, my8 take up sum steps in making anant spend holi wid his family as promised by her to her MIL... Navya dunt want to hurt nyones feelings n wants prosperity bt relations do nt accept n go in a ry8 way all d time...

Today's majority of d soaps r based on women oriented line n cuming to soaps Channel n PH want to create a drama n gain popularity out of dis fake dramas which s moreover fascinated by indian traditional society, women being accused by her family members n stuffz make d soap highlighted bt cuming to reality even todays indian society s out of dez daily dramas n lives in a corporate world where all of dem irrespective of deir ideals b it woman or man... strategies r followed in a same line by women either in all most all d existing part of todays indian society unlike sumwhere in sum rural parts...

Yes, completely agree. While they have such fancy tagline as "nayi soch", when it comes to portraying women it is still the stereotype! They always show women suffer, taking things lying down, older women in the family torturing the younger ones - ridiculous!

I am also writing to Anantika ji - atleast being a women she should be more sensitive to the issues and not depict women this way

They should show Navya as a more bold character.

Also, how can she hide the fact from Anant that his mother visited and shouted at her? Why should she hide? She deserves respect and should nto take all these lying down

Very disappointed by the way they are showing Navya bearing all these nonsense

The idea for the DOTW came up from yesterday's episode of Navya. It is to be noted that the DOTW doesn't have to have a DIRECT relation to the show. Any discussion INSPIRED from something in the show is also allowed.

The inspiration for the DOTW was the altercation between Navya and Sugandha in Wednesday's episode, where Sugandha is blaming Navya for the entire situation, and Navya is listening to all the accusations meekly like a silent lamb. This is a scenario seen in many Hindi Soaps, and I'm trying to highlight that point.

If this DOTW or any of my words offended you in any way, I sincerely apologise for doing so. But since my topic has been stickied by the mods, I don't think I'm breaking any rules here.

Cheers,

Ritchelle

Yesterday's encounter between Navya and Sugandha showed us the typical IN-LAW psychology. Right from the beginning the attitude is "My son can do no wrong. All the fault lies with the bahu."
Honestly speaking this is a common attitude in most Indian homes. I have also faced this non acceptance. But what is unrealistic is the meek submission by the DILs of Indian soaps. These heroines never think ill of their in laws no matter what.
This is quite unnatural. Is it not natural to feel angry, frustrated, maybe lose your cool once in a while? Also can there never be a forceful retaliation against injustice? Why do we have such an overdose of this holier than thou attitude?
I think the serial makers are not willing to take any risks. After all the Indian mythological heroines still have a great influence over the Indian psyche, and so it is safer to put all heroines in that mould.
Maybe Navya could set the trend and become the path breaker!

An awesome DOTW, Rit👏
There are MILs who don't leave any stone unturned to accuse their DILs for each and everything, even if the latter is not at fault. But as Roomni said, what surprises me the most is the submissive attitude of the DILs. God has given the power and ability of speech to most of these DILs... Why they don't use their ability and clear all MUs is beyond my IQ level. And the most surprising thing is, these DILs don't even feel angry towards their MILs, rather than they justify them: How unrealistic, especially when most of these Devi maiiyas are educated!! I am not saying to rebel against your in-laws, but atleast, speak up if you know that you are right!! Please note that I am not justifying the MILs here. Their attitude of blaming their DILs for every freaking unhappenings in their house must too change. This is a very regressive attitude of our society (or atleast of our TV world, considering that Dukhiyarin abla bahus garner the highest TRPs) and THIS SHOULD CHANGE... TV has a great effect on our lives, and if the shows continue to portray women like this, then I am sorry to say but we will always be stuck in the 19th century, while the rest of the world will keep on progressing.

Love your post Ritchelle and living in US it amazes me that Indian public is so mesmerized by this crap where the abla nari scenario never ceases to fail.I know in most Indian households the DIL does get blamed but don't tell me there is no other way around. Why is that the soaps are always stuck with the same ghisa pita track in every soap and still people can't seem to get enough of it.If it was here, people would speak up and there would be an uproar of the kind of message being sent out to the masses and the younger generation which is growing up thinking its ok for a woman to tolerate this crap becoz she is born a woman. It's high time INdian society realized that fakeness is eventually going to take its toll.
