Yup. It seems nobody, not even the director nor his costars used to treat Amitabh with respect prior to his success. He used to go around begging people to give him roles. This is CONFIRMED news.

I do NOT agree ...

if this is the case then everyone is forgetting ...be it Dharmendra , Rajesh Khanna , Shashi Kapoor , Dilip Kumar etc etc etc

Topic is abt ppl of similar age ...in the starting one is ahead and after sometimes other is ahead like the example of Bobby and Abhi or lara and preity ... all r of same age almost, still have time left in their hands, then it comes that where is Bobby and where is AB jr or where is Lara and where is preity

Dharmendra never went down when he was young or was active in movies ... he automatically retired bcz of his age just like every other Actor ... AB sr is the only one who is doing well in his age of roles ...

How can u compare Two ppl's old age position ? not everyone can remain same kind of active like other

Shashi kapoor is on wheel chair at the age of 73 while Dharmendra is 76 , more active than him . AB Sr is only 4 years younger than Shashi Kapoor ... and lots of this kind of examples ... BUT we Can't say, Oh look where is Shashi today , he is Forgetting or where is AB Sr today who did so many movies with him

Its absolutely Wrong

Yup. This also included him not being paid any money for one of his roles. On sets, he used to eat by himself because he was a nobody. This is confirmed news from someone who worked with him directly, But then things changed and he became what he is today, a superstar! I love the younger Amitabh, so tall and hairy 😍

Its unfair to say Dharmendra is a loser compared to Big B. Big B is more successful alright but Dharmendra is a legend too and got the success he deserved. A better comparision would be between Navin Nischol and Big B. Big B started off as a villian in Parwana where Navin played the hero. Their fortunes reversed and Navin famously rejected a second lead in Deewar which Shashi Kapoor did simply because of his ego which didnt let him accept the second lead role with an actor who played the villian in his movie. Navin Nischol was later relegated to doing father roles on TV. We know where Big B is now.

Success eluded Navin Nischol

v. gangadhar

tribute Navin Nischol made a grand debut but could never stay at the top

The one that won Navin Nischol with Rekha in "Sawan Bhadon".

T he car had just left Mumbai on its way to Pune, when Navin Nischol, the 65-year-old actor asked the air-conditioner to be lowered. He then suddenly slumped forward, that was it. He had succumbed to a fatal heart attack. It was the kind of death he'd always wished; he is believed to have told his friend and fellow actor Rishi Kapoor. Quick and painless, that's the way to die!

A case of illusion and reality with which Nischol had been familiar from the time of his1970 hit film Sawan Badhon, remembered to this day for co-star Rekha, who also made her debut with that film. His Best Student Gold Medal from the Pune Film Institute paid off and during the next decade, he had a string of successful and average films — Buddha Mil Gaya, Dhund, Victoria 203, Hanste Zakam and Parwana.

Songs from these films were chartbusters. Unfortunately, Navin Nischol, unlike the top stars of those days, could not keep up with the pace and failed to manage his career properly. It was a period when Rajesh Khanna and Dharmendra were top heroes, and Amitabh Bachchan was waiting in the wings. The early films of Nischol coincided with the release of the Rajesh Khanna super hit Kati Patang, and the media made some unflattering comments about Nischol being the poor man's Rajesh Khanna. This hurt his ego and affected his choice of his films.

Though Nischol played the lead in Parwana, it was Amitabh Bachchan, as the villain, who stole the show. Perhaps this rankled and Nischol refused the key second lead in Deewar which was grabbed by Shashi Kapoor and led to his increasing demand.

Nischol perhaps felt that with his FTI gold medal and the box office success of Sawan Bhadon, he deserved bigger and better films. Somehow this did not happen; he was seldom co-starred with top heroines of the day.

Saira Banu dazzled with him in 'Victoria 203' but films with Priya Rajvansh, despite critical acclaim, did not click at the box office. His attitude problem prevented him from approaching producers and asking for roles, and his PR was not up to the mark.

Disillusioned at times

Somehow, there was an impression within the industry that Nischol was a difficult man to work with. As Shabana Azmi recollects, "Navin was hurt by the disappearance of his instant stardom and the manner in which it was snatched away from him before he could settle down. At times, he was bitter, at times philosophical and finally moved away from it all."

With lead roles not coming his way, Nischol had to accept character roles but was noticed by critics in films such as Teri Baahon Mein, Samunder, Burning Train and Major Saab. Occasionally, his talent was recognised and he got good roles in the more recent Khosla ka Ghosla and Break Ke Baad.

Meanwhile, Nischol, along with Shekhar Suman, had become a household name thanks to his role in the popular sitcom Dekh Bhai Dekh and later, Daal Mein Kala. Young actors found they could learn a lot from him. But there were further complications in his life. Nichol took to drink and had a turbulent family life. His first wife, Neelu (director Shekhar Kapur's sister) discovered his affair with a starlet and obtained a divorce. Second wife Geetanjali killed herself and left a note blaming the actor and his family for her death.

For the best part of his life, Navin Nischol was an unhappy man. But those who knew him liked him, and his funeral was well attended by film personalities. That was a consoling factor to a final elegy on Navin Nischol, "He could have done much better!"

Just thougth I'd add a few cents to this fascinating discussion.

1. Jimmy Shergill was destined for critical and commercial acclaim because he made his debut in Gulzar's Maachis - although a babyface, bearded, long haired Jimmy is almost unrecognizable there. 😊. Jimmy gives a very assured, understated performance in Maachis - he proved his acting chops early on. Saw him recently in Sahib Biwi aur Gangster and loved how well he acted.

2. If Rani's dad is a B-grader, then by definition Randhir Kapoor, Rajeev Kapoor are all B-graders. Rani's dad is from the legendary Shashadhar Mukherjee family, one of the most well-respected and earliest film production families in BW. It's the Mukherjee family that was responsible for introducing BW to people like Ashok Kumar, Kishore Kumar, Sadhana (in Love in Shimla) etc. Rani has as much pedigree as Kareena.

3. I'm puzzled that Rakesh Roshan said that Hrithik is the person who turned his fortunes. Rakesh's first big hit as a producer was Khudgarz - starring Shatrughan Sinha and Govinda. This started his K fetish and he carried it on with Karan Arjun which was also a massive hit. His fortunes took a small downturn with Koyla and King Uncle - both turkeys and Kaho na Pyar Hai then put him back on the map.
