Hi Guys...recently an interview came out on Rangmanch TV where she talked about IPKKND plot etc...Wanted to share my view on that...so here they are:

Gul: We wanted to make a story about a man, his love and his sister, and how his love also becomes the other woman in his sisters life. Not many people know when the show was first conceived, the show was narrated to thechannel as "Didi ki Saut". But we decided it scrap it since it was too regressive. The working title of the show was "Vaidehi" before this tale found its hit name that rings romantic bells in every heart today. Later we decided on "Iss Pyar ko kya Naam Doon" before the show was to go on air.

Are you serious...Didi Ki Saut? Jesus Christ! I wouldn't be caught dead watching any serial named THAT!! But then I really really hope that while the main elements of the story are there (even though I am not really fond of this plot...with Shyamu story...it is still regressive) the story is about Arhi and not about Anj...I hope the CVs realize that...what is working for the show has very little to do with the original plot...So lets do the bare essential with the orginal plot and let the creativity fly with Arhi story...as we have seen them do in the last 9 months of the show...every bit of that has been really entertaining...except the Shyamu bit...

Arnav and Anjali: The Thesis and Anti-Thesis of one another

Gul: If you actually look at the story, though both Arnav and Anjali have a very similar past, and you on the face of it feel Arnav has taken things badly, it is actually Anjali who is more damaged while Arnav has taken a more practical route. At all times he is the one who is holding her. You will observe Anjali is paranoid, obsessive, see's bad signs and superstitions, clings to her brother and husband all the time. She has taken whatever has happened badly hence turning Arnav totally protective towards her. She is complexed about her foot, her husbands love for her and things going wrong all the time. It would take only one button to push her off the cliff. So imagine how hard things are going to be for her when she learns the truth about her husband she loves more than her life.

This can be ineresting...I just hope they keep her real and not dellusional like Shyam...What I fear is that although really cares for his sister...and he does shut her up when she gets OTT...(like when he said...when is this drama going to end di...), the don't lose this....So I hope...in the interest of the story ...they don't make Arnie completely a di's boy who is just another mama's boy...mama replaced by Di...here...

Arnav Singh Raizada, the Dark Horse.

Gul: The story demanded Arnav to be dark unlike most of the leads in various love stories. If you see in Iss Pyar Ko Kya Naam Doon, Khushi Kumari Gupta and Arnav Singh Raizada are complete opposite to each other in every respect. While Arnav believes in live-in relationships, she believes in the institution of marriage. Arnav does not believe in love where as Khushi lives for love. Their differences go to the extent that Khushi loves Jalebis while Arnav is diabetic. They are just poles apart. If you ask me, I feel a love story becomes more interesting when the guy is brooding and the girl who is all bubbly eventually breaks that mould. I have seen people comparing Arnav with Maan, but if you ask me one shouldnt do that because Maan was a tough character where as Arnav is a dark one. The only person he cares about is his Sister Anjali and can do anything for her which is something that we have all witnessed now.

Gul is absolutely right...that the difference in the personalities and philosophies between Arnie and Khushi makes the show interesting...What will not work ...if one is able to ocmpletely dominate the other...like we have seen in the SR scene and the week after their marriage...Khushi has to be equally strong to keep this interesting...Most of all, I hope Arnie's story develops beyond...the one and only love in his life...to be his...Di...If that is preset ...this is no fun...but if it goes through transformation...then yes...we have got something...

Mohabbat meets Nafrat

Gul: When you share a connection with a person, you cannot run away from the fact no matter how hard you try. Both Arnav and Khushi are irresistibly attracted to each other and yet are dangerous for each other as well.

Character and Relationship Graphing: Arnav, Shyam and Anjali

Gul: Anjali is physically handicapped and feels inadequate because of her disability to walk normally. Shyam is that one person who when in the Raizada house, showers her with love, protects her and gives her undivided attention. Arnav always wanted someone like that for his sister. To add on to this, Anjali also is head over heals in love with Shyam. To have a person like Shyam who has no issues with being a Ghar Jamai , loves his sister to bits and also takes her tantrums is something that fits Arnav's requirement perfectly to the T.

According to me the character of Shyam is very real because people like him do exist in the real world. There are men like him in every day life who even after being married, have a roving eye. Also surprisingly they don't find anything wrong in what they do and more than often get away with it as well. As they say looks are always deceptive.

I don't get Shyam and never will...I think he is a one dimensional character...very poorly sketched...made out to be whatever suits the flavor of the day...extremely kind to extremely brutal, extremely honorable...to a letch of the lowest kind...very dumb with no plan to some one who is msart to beat them al...It is a joke...

Mohabbat Door Jaane Na De

Gul: Arnav is a very hard hearted person and khushi just presses the wrong button all the time. He does not like dancing, he does not like people shouting at him, he does not like being adviced and Khushi does all of that. She irks him completely. But inspite of all the irritable qualities Khushi has, Arnav still gets drawn to her which gives way to his emotional turmoil. Even when he losses control for a spilt second in the "jadoo hai nasha hai" sequence, the very next moment he blasts her, not because she is at fault but because of his own weakness he has for her. He hurts her more as he is unable to comprehend how and why Khushi affects him so much.

OK...Gul...don't stop at emotional turmoil...us se aage badho please...

Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon Vs Geet Hui Sabse Parayi

Gul: We always visualised the Arnav-Khushiromance in larger than life style and hence worked towards portraying it that way. The passion, the angst, the music all put together is what makes it look somewhat like Geet, so comparisons are bound to happen. We also feel that setting up characters like Shyam andAnjali was very important and crucial. The strong unspoken bond between Arnav and Khushi wouldn't have worked, had these characters not been established strongly. Setting up the characters is a very important aspect of any show. Arnav who does not believe in love, sees Khushi in different light and eventually comes to love her, is all a part of the set up. However, currently he doubts khushi and in the bargain punishes her as well as himself by behaving in a ruthless manner, is once again for his sister Anjali. Had his relation with Anjali not been established, these scenes would be very frivolous.

Ruthless is fine Gul...but please don't push Arnie over the edge in cruelty...The sleeping outside by the pool thing...sill is undigestable to me (although my mom said...thats because you haven't lived in India much...)...Whatever...it is...please let Arnie remain on this side of the line of remaining essentially a "decent" human being after all said and done...

Thank you All for the Team Work

Gul: (laughing loud) I keep thinking. The entire bunch of IPKKND has worked tremendously for the show.Ved Raj who is writing the story is brilliant. Gautam Hegde who does the screenplay is so funny and Hitesh Kewaliya who writes the dialogue is even funnier. He was the one who brought about the "Hello Hi Bye Bye,"which has become the signature dialogue of Manorama Mami. There is Megha who is the Creative Director, "woh bechaari soti nahi hai, bas kaam hi karti rehti hai." Lalit Mohan and Arshad Khanwho handle sequences fantastically. Raju Singh's melodies always takes the love story to a different genre. We have a good editor who does amazing cuts. The entire team is what IPKKND is all about.

Kudos to the IPKKND creative team...The musical scores are the best...I hope the get an award for 'rabba ve" as well as the Piano score they play for Arhi.😃 The dialogue writing has improved more recently...I thought the aukat dialogues were too regressive...

Nice post Sush !!

Forget any of us watching...I doubt Sanaya and Barun would have signed the show if it was called 'Didi Ki Saut'.

If they are planning to keep Shyam, they better give him a logical back story which makes sense. I still want to know what he was doing in Lucknow during the fashion show fiasco.

Last two weeks were just painful to watch...I hope next week is better.

I disagree with you here sush, about Shyam. I think the character is absolutely fascinating. There is so much scope to the character if portrayed well. I think Abhaas is doing a fabulous job ,until the twitching started.

There are many men who do lust over a girl even if they are married. Its quiet common. But what makes his character interesting is that he is a street smart guy who married well. He wanted a good lifestyle through marriage. He is not a casanova ,who falls for every other girl. He fell for a simple girl after he got married. Till now his character is similar to SRK in Kabhi Alvida na kehna.

But what is different about him is that he loves his image. Of a good person, of a good son in law..He doesn't want his image to be tarnished. He wanted 2 separate lives with 2 wives. But it was beyond his control and finally Guptas came to know about him. He is a psychopath now.. He wants to possess Khushi even though he knows she doesn't care for him. He made plans to kill his wife. The news that he is becoming a father has no effect on him. He just wants Khushi.. Now he is more like SRK in Darr.

I think the negative character is a pretty good one with lot of scope about his past too.. N AM is fabulous. Hope he continues in some way in this show.

Very aptly put lovie very aptly put...and I agree with your characterization of the interview...I hope that Gul listens and develops the story of arhi and not arnav and his di...seriously when i read this and thought didi ki saut???W*F?????you are kidding me right???sounds like a inidan po*n version but thank goodness they changed it.
I personally find this di bro love bit OTT...i get it that they are orphaned and only had each other, had this been 2sisters story it would have been more believable purely because girls generally are emotional by nature where men seems to be more practical(however here our khushi is the practical one and arnav just doesnt think)...so to digest bro sis love like that honestly creeps me out a bit...i watch this show purely for arnav and khushi...the sis is bit psycotic in my opinion with regressed co dependent personality...she needs someone all the time...such as not giving bro privacy and clinging to her hubby...no wonder he wants out...
Shyam's character reminds me of very selfish person who atleast in his mind has justified his actions. He has a very narsicsstic personality where he doesnt realise or see others point of view and arnav kinds of falls there too...in his mind shyam thinks he loves khushi so he wants her and what surprised me was gul saying that in real life there are men like him, she is right but i thought no passing message and all??
Khushi is the best character shown and progressed and i hope they keep the story line simple and show us arnav khushi love story developing...no one wants to watch bro sis story however deep it may be. And i hope this misunderstanding gets sorted ASAP some love scenes and then bring on other issues...but resolve them without the abuse and the weird scenarios...
well this is all from me but great post as usual

nice post Shush!!

If we see the screen time allotted to characters..then ARHI have it most!! itself speaks a volume that serial is about them...yes Anjali comes and goes..but we have seen, arnav has listened to khushi many times than Anjali!!!

on a funny note, Arnav has listen to Anjali only when it has something related to her physically!! If she is going overboard with drama and crying, arnie has stopped her!!

I so want to see the transition!! i am not telling he should not give priority to Anjali!! but As the time demands and the situation demands..he should support khushi as well because she is his wife..Anjali should stop getting dependent on Arnav..she should be more dependent on her husband!!

I don't mind Arnav's support and love and priority to Anjali..but i want Anjali to understand as she is elder sister..He is married now!! Not all secrets will be shared with her!!

Evening Sush.
"Didi ki Saut " woud anyone name a 21st century show by this name ? It is not only regressive but tacky too. Even the concept seems like a third rate plot. Thank god they moved away from Vaidehi also coz that too would have been a very different flavor show from what it is now. I guess the IPPKND name suits just fine.
Anji characterisation is interseting. She has always seemd very fragile. Her constant pooja and vrat and her not speaking up to mami or anyone fits in exactly what she was designed to do by the producers. Though I would not discount a steely strength that lies underneath. She has dispalyed it a couple of time when negotaiting to get Khushi to trains La or even her recent accident when she went to the hosiptal for the driver. She does have everyone in the household wrapped around her finger and it maybe because they have a soft corner for her due to her past. She is a sweet lady and I like her minus her habit of clingling to her bro or husband. She is the weakest link in the entire show.
Shyamu. The character sketch skill remains very vague and unexplained despite Gul's attempt. As you say he is used as per convienece and demand of a certain situation. Dont understand as to what does this man stand for and what does he want. All he seems to me is a lech with a sweet tongue.
The Anj & ArHI combination. There will definetly be a time when Arnie will have to chose between his 2 lady loves. In the comings days he will get distant from his sister and closer to Khushi and then will the dynamics really present itself. I would very much like Arnie to stand up for Khushi but that is very unlikely to happen,
Lastly Gul mentioned the crew and the IPK team but did not specifically mention the two lead actors. Not sure if on purpose or otherwise. For me Barun & Sanaya have literally taken these 2 characters and made it their own and live them. They cannot do it alone it has to be supported by a script and good direction . There have been times when they have gone over and above the script to give superlative perfomances be it emotional, drama or comedy.
I hope they continue to do well and win the Best International jodi award..
Till later.

Hi Sush!

Hope you are having a good weekend. I am enjoying the beautiful pleasant almost here Spring weather...went cycling and driving.

I had read this interview a couple days ago.

I totally concur with your thoughts about Arhi being the main attraction of this serial...we aren't watching this serial for Anjali...at least I'm not!!
I watch this only for Arhi. Iss Pyaar Ko Kya naam Doon is what caught my attention...I am watching it for its unusual MB type story..definitely not for the bhai behen angle!
The brother sis relationship as a side story is palatable, but if takes over the leads' love story then I don't think I will like it!

I hope the PH and the CVs know what made this serial so popular...Its Arhi...and I hope they keep that in focus.

'Didi Ki Saut'?!!! 😲 😕 That is one weird title...who would even think of something like that?! Ughhh!!

What ever happened to this being a story about the difference in KHushi and Arnav's ideologies...there is too much focus on "saut" angle...

Sush - yet another lovely post from you.

Now let's find a way to send this over to Gul somehow 😊

I so much want them to get over the Shyam story and focus on Arhi love story. Have never been a fan of Abhaas or Shyam for that matter.

Glad you called out the musical score, IMO, IPK's BG score if one of the best.

And CVs - It is hard enough to deal with the dark character of ASR, please don't add Anjali to the list.

Thanks and have a great Saturday!!

Sahana
