Great post Sush!
Gul's interview was good because it gave an insight into the characters as they were perceived and have been portrayed so far. I'm certainly glad they changed the 2 working titles and finally named it IPKKND. This definitely means the crux of the story is the unconventional love story of ARHI.
Plus if you go by just the interview, Khushi seems to have the least importance but in reality she plays the strongest character and her screen time is maximum probably even slightly more than Arnav's. Thus i believe that the bro-sister angle will come into play where he chooses Anj over Khushi but i do think when the truth is out Arnav WILL support Khushi. It will be Khushi who will make Arnav chose Anj, because she knows her importance in his life. This may lead to a brief separation track where both realize they cannot live without the other😃
Also a lot of importance has been give to DM in this serial, the engagement, wedding, post marriage rituals have happened with DM's blessings and we know DM can never really cause long term harm to Khushi. If the whole bro-sis angle were to gain focus, that would mean doom time for Khushi and looking at how the CV's have maintained the DM angle, i don't think that will happen.

Sush, thanks for bringing this interview up... I hadn't seen it and it helps me connect some of the dots in terms of the characters and their motivations

I see everyone gagging on Didi Ki Saut, but I think this is pretty standard for the creative process - the first few versions (story and titles) are pretty literal/crude and as they marinate with time, they evolve and get richer in meaning.

Quite a few folks here seem to feel extreme annoyance with Anjali but after reading Gul's take I think she's a terrific character - layered, complex, ridden with insecurities but kind and well intentioned. I like that kind of depth and I join you in the hope that she isn't reduced to a Shyam type negative one dimensional character. Plus I'm a huge sucker for bro-sis relationships, so co dependency or not I think I'll be in the Anjali-Arnav corner for the most part --- but that's just me!

Agree with Somzz and Rita.C that a Shyam type character is plausible and can be fascinating. Also think LurveBooks hit the nail on the head --- the execution has been poor. He is a bit OTT and inept. That Abhaas plays the obviously villainous version with twitching facial muscles, flaring nostrils and heavy breathing doesn't help.

I don't think there is any doubt that ArHi and the way Sanaya and Barun bring them to life power the show. I don't think the creative team doubts that either. But a love story needs tension, credible roadblocks --- Shyam now and perhaps Anjali down the road, so that'll always be significant to the story. I do agree with Athithi that it's possible to go overboard with the yin-yang portrayal. There have to some core shared values that forge the relationship otherwise it doesn't seem credible.

Great analysis! I hadn't seen this particular interview before..

Didi Ki Saut? Are you kidding?? I would never even have considered whatching it if they'd kept that name! And what was the other one? Vaidehi? What does that mean?
I do hope they don't fixate on the original plot line.. It's the ArHi love story that makes this show work. There's enough there, with the diametrically opposite personalities, to keep the show going for a long time, yet.. The sister-brother in law deal feels more like a side plot line, to progress the dynamics between the main leads, and I think the creative team should really keep it this way. If the sister-wife-brother in law plot line becomes central to the show, they will really lose out in terms of story quality..
As for the characters, I think all of them have been pretty well developed and consistent, except for Anjali. She's a confusing one. They started off showing her as being all sunshiny and bright. Yes, she was superstitious and a little paranoid about small things, but it was endearing more than anything else. Now she's turned into this quiet, brooding, miserable woman, who's a bit of a dark horse. I think the transition between the two personas was a little abrupt. It was like a switch went off post the ArHi marriage, and she became a different person. I really don't know what to expect in terms of her future character development, and her possible reactions when the truth comes out. It'll be interesting to see, though.
All in all, it was an interesting article. Thanks for sharing, and for the brilliant analysis..

sush i read this interview a couple of days ago.. all this while i was thinking anji to be a simple character coz till now she has been portrayed that way her tube light will be on in the right time nd then apparently fuses off for most of the time .. same thing with nani also .. the cvs shouldtake care that the leads, side characters should not suffer fom amnesia coz many important events in life will be recollected nd not that easily forgotten.. payal-kushi bond is good compared to the bro-sis blood relation .. anji is unknowingly/knowingly interfering a lot in arhi's life developing her insecurities which she might well blurt out to that uncanny husband of hers.. nd i would love to see that day..thats when actual change in the bro-sis dynamics occurs.. nd the father- daughter love is portrayed very nicely n the story .. shashi gupta is one of the most important character in the story who is a bridge between the 2 families.. hope his imp nd screen time increases.. nd he will play an important role ..but raizadas nd esp mami will exploit the maximum from the truth nd def throw payal away .. nd guptas will eventually face the music for starting a relationship based on lies .. that is when they will understand arhis sacrifice .. but the road still seems hard for kushi.. waiting for the snake to strike .. nd their misunderstandings clear..

Sush just my 2 cents...as you said

I hope the CVs realize that...what is working for the show has very little to do with the original plot...So lets do the bare essential with the orginal plot and let the creativity fly with Arhi story...as we have seen them do in the last 9 months of the show...every bit of that has been really entertaining...except the Shyamu bit...
The show has tasted success becos of what you mentioned above..I completely concur with you here and have all hopes that the PH will not tamper or go off track which might hinder the success of the show... the show has always maintained its focus on Arhi and it has some brilliant execution and direction.as you mentioned the BG score is excellent and some credit to the script...though sometimes it does go off track. They have the best leads who keep us glued.

Gulkhan was invovled in the characterisation is what I heard..but you can see Nissar's touch in the romantic scenes..he is a pro at it...and I cannot forget his formula for 500 epi success...in his words
"keep the leads in the same frame and all the characters in the show always act to bring the leads together". Have you seeen anywhere the villain brings the leads together😆...and to be frank I see this only for Arhi and forget the loops and pitholes when it comes to other characters.😛

When they need to bring in a twist there is lot of drama happnening otherwise the show has consistently been light hearted and about Arhi and so this saut story is just for drama purpose and it will not focus on that much..it will always stay as Arhi story.

Even few days back when they showed too much of Arnav- Anjali it was to grill into the audience that Arnie's reaction was driven by his love for his Di but later on the focus shifted back immediately on Arhi..so the same will go when Anjali will know the truth she will be a catalyst in giving a twist.

The interview was just her reminiscing about the inital layout of the show..so many things keep changing while the show keeps moving ahead... I have much confidence on the Cvs ..hope they dont make me eat my words.

HI. I had read that Nissar's interview as well and it makes sense. It will always be about the lead and the chars around are only for the purpose to move the ArHI story.
Also I do get a feeling that there is really no long term stratgey ( in TV land I bet long term is a few months ) and not sure if other serials have taht too. How far can you take a love story without "love" Now that ArHI are together they have assured us that we will get to see them in the same frame often. But how long can they deny the attraction now that they are man & wife.
This hate track , whenever they have taken it a bit too far the audience has reacted unfavourably. The Farak padta hai was retraced and now that promo which was aired last week on Arnie threatening to send back Payal also is retracted. My point as to how long will these two resist each other and how will the cvs do it. Will have to wait & watch.
Take care Zu.

According to me the character of Shyam is very real because people like him do exist in the real world. There are men like him in every day life who even after being married, have a roving eye. Also surprisingly they don't find anything wrong in what they do and more than often get away with it as well. As they say looks are always deceptive.

I don't get Shyam and never will...I think he is a one dimensional character...very poorly sketched...made out to be whatever suits the flavor of the day...extremely kind to extremely brutal, extremely honorable...to a letch of the lowest kind...very dumb with no plan to some one who is msart to beat them al...It is a joke...

I so wanted your views on Gul's ideas... thanks Sush 😊...
I think your mom is right😉 ... you haven't lived in India, so you don't know, the fact is there are many like Shyam loitering about, just looking for a chance ... there are variety of grades of Shyamness (ask me I've personally faced one myself) from a mild variety ... just leching😡 to the other extreme who will not hesitate to murder 😲...

Bigamous toads do exist. So do serial killers. But calling Shyam a good villain based on real characters is a joke. He is a pale imitation of a good villain. I think his character has not been sketched properly. Nor has Aabhas Mehta been given a chance to act. So far, he has been indulging in facial contortions only.

I don't know who gave the show its present name. But may God bless him. Otherwise this show would have been one among hundreds of underviewed soaps on air.

The writers definitely have a good sense of humour, & the dialogues are fantastic. And one word about the actors. All of them are fantabulous. Just perfect. Even minor characters like JP, OP, HP etc. Someone has paid a lot of attention to casting.

The costumes need improvement. Khushi's hair needs work done on it asap.

And no filler episodes pls. By the way, rona-dhona has outstayed its welcome. No more, for God's sake.

@ Zu: Completely agree, this has been portrayed as and always will be ARHI's story. But to keep it interesting for the Indian TV audience they have to create drama, tension and twists. That's where all the supporting characters come into play. Anjali is definitely going to be another cause of tension for ARHI. But this time they will highlight the pain of separation and how he is torn between his Di and his love. Ultimately ARHI overcome this obstacle to emerge stronger and then i guess the past hits building up a scenario for more drama. If a love story is to last 500 episodes and we are currently at 200 they need to portray ups and downs and their journey through it to keep it interesting.

@ Ratna: I agree that the PH knows what works for it. Even though IPKKND has great TRP's its audience is not the average Indian soap audience. Most of my friends in India who watch IPKKND don't watch any other TV serial. So while they will bring in hatred, pain, angst, drama they will keep it real to an extent and not drag for months because it won't go well with the kind of audience that IPKKND has, hence the dark tracks in the past have been shown but not been dragged forever.

@ Docgirl: Agree on the "didi ki saut" and "vaidehi" being working titles for a crude first draft. But the story has been developed beautifully way past the initial conception. The very fact that they changed the title to something that suggests that its a love story means this is and will primarily remain ARHI's story.
