In olden times, if you were a widow, you had to dress up in all white, and not aloud to to basically anything. Just stay in the house, cook and take care of kids, if you had any.

Does it still happen these days? And do you think that it was right, what happend? Do you beleive that Widows still should have to wear white, and not have the right to do anything.

Limited to white sari only- was an inhumane practice 😕. The whole point was that your husband is dead, so all the happiness is gone with him. Why should you wear bright colors and look happy- this way you will only attract other men! They even forced shaving of the head and widows were forced to live in either widow ashram or in their parents house. Prime example of this was exposed in "Prem Rog." Thank God, people protested against it and things are better now. Even though I still feel that baby boomer generation still has to get out of their backward beliefs against widows. On my wedding last year, all my Bhuaji's stopped my mammi ji to attend my Chuda shagan because she was a widow. Only if I had known on time, I would have told them off. My dad was upset too, but none of us knew. We all thought my mammi ji was sleeping since this shagan occurs 5 in the morning. I did call later on and told all my aunties off 😡.
There are widows belonging to uneducated class or sometimes (sad enough) to educated class which suffers from this practice. It's wrong.
It was like this in all of the countries. In Europe, widows were forced to wear dark brown or black outfits. In victorian era, Mourning for the widow, would last usually two and-a-half years. Women of the period were expected to show the outward appearance of the family's sorrow.

No this isn't practised much in India anymore. I have seen elderly widows who dress simply. They may not wear red which signifies "suhag" or marital bliss. But they will wear light colour sarees and very little make up and simple jewelry if they are a traditionalist.

But otherwise those old days are gone like portrayed in that old movie Prem Rog- starring my fav Rishi Kappor and Padmini Kolapuri.

Actually like Aparna said it doesn't happen anymore.

My great Grandmother lost her husband 2 years after their marraige. Till today, she still wears coloured nine yard saris. I think she even wears red or maroon saris. If my great grandmother started doing it many years back, i'm sure people of the current generation would too!

I am guessing the white sari tradition is still practiced in some parts, but most likely that doesn't happen anymore...

I believe its not right coz when the wife dies the husband wear white for the funeral and then he can do whatever he wants y can't a woman? aren't we the same living being? I think women espically mothers should be consider great because they are the ones who bring a life on earth.
