"What is happening to me, why did I react with such an insane rush of protectivess?... Why couldn't I resist the touch of that goon on Khushi's skin? They had touched Khushi's skin, but why did my skin burn?... Why couldn't I control myself when he pushed her and she bumped her head?... What made me so reckless that I was willing to kill for a girl?" Arnav questioned himself sitting perplexed at the edge of his bed while the thoughts of past few hours kept on haunting him, and this was not it.
What was worse was the atrocity of that girl Khushi Kumari Gupta who constantly aggravated him with questions about his behavior about which he himself had no answers. The thoughts kept on invading his mind in a ghastly manner until he could bear there weight no longer and he just lied back on the bed and closed his eyes. There was some yelling going on in the background, with Mami yelling at the top of her voice escalating his anger, making him get up, come out, and give her a piece of his mind.
As he came in the lounge he could hear Mami, and Anjali in the drawing room talking on the phone with the speakerphone on:
Arnav who had stopped dead in his tracks at the mention of Khushi's name felt a pounding on his chest, hearing Khushi's state. Anjali spotted him at that moment.
She stood in front of the murti of Devi Maiyya, hands folded, head bent and deep in prayer. The doctor had declared her father to be out of danger, but the sense of danger that engulfed her had not let her go. She could not understand how her father who was recovering very well could have such a massive heart attack. The entire family was giving them the medicines on time, the food with less spice, and salt. They were following all the orders of the doctors but she was still puzzled of what instigated such a situation. So, she was standing at the only place where she believed she could get the answers she was seeking.
She was busy in prayer when she heard the sound of footsteps. The corridor was empty except for her so she could easily hear the 'tap' of the footsteps. Her curiousity grew and she turned to see who was approaching her. Those footsteps sounded eerily familiar. He was at the far end of the corridor. At the sight of him she felt like breaking herself in his arms and with only that thought in her mind, and tears flowing endlessly through her eyes she ran towards him unable to hold herself back and deposited herself next to his chest while her arms grabbed his back... and she let her tears lose.
He had his arm around her for support while she had clung to his chest. He now wanted to put his other arm around her to placate her, but before he could do so his mind stopped him. He couldn't touch her like that... but why shouldn't he (his heart retributed). There was nothing wrong in easing someone's pain, and she was in insufferable grief right now. Isn't that what his mother used to say?. Besides he wanted to comfort her, and hold her as well.
With his heart overpowering his mind, he opened his clenched fist and wrapped his arm around her back caressing it as slowly and he could, wishing that his feelings of comfort would transfer through to her in this moment. After a while he tightened his grip. Her touch flaring him. She held him tighter as well as he caressed her letting her words die down and only letting the silence remain.
It was in that moment Arnav realized that his heart was missing a piece, and that missing piece was Khushi. Now, he had found that happiness enveloped in his arms. He felt like a phoenix who when dies burns up in a ball of fire and then is reborn from the ashes. He experienced his heart ameliorating in that instant. His heart had died ages ago and was now resurrecting from the ashes of the past. He felt a reawakening of emotions in the dead vessel which now seemed alive, and he closed his eyes letting those emotions drown him over.
