Chapter 6 - Demons In The Night

The following morning possessed much awkwardness for Geet Handa.

Sitting down reluctantly at the breakfast table, she wanted to avoid Maan more than anything after their meeting last night.

Amelia took her usual seat at the table, causing Geet to snap out of her reverie & smile at the child across her.

"Miss Geet, my tutor is coming today," Amelia beamed as she tore off a piece from her bread.

"Tutor?"

"Amelia is home schooled. She has been on holidays from her schooling recently but her tutor returns today to resume classes." Madhavi explained.

"Are you excited about the classes again?" Geet asked.

"Very. I love school. Did you love school, Miss Geet?"

Geet's hands paused on her teacup as she reminisced of her school days.

The memories came flooding back like an unwanted storm.

The disease. Meera's death. The silent suffering, feeling locked inside the building, like a prisoner.
Those cold, lonely, sleepless nights she spent thrashing around in her small bed.
The nightmares-

"Geet?"

Geet blinked once, then looked at Madhavi who looked at her with a worried expression. Her soft hands went over Geet's cold ones, & Geet looked down, realising she had been gripping the teacup so hard her knuckles went white.

She released her hold, looking away from Madhavi's questioning glare. Thankfully, Madhavi didn't have time to pursue her answers as Maan entered, bringing a gust of cold air with him as usual.

He took his seat at the far end. Geet suddenly became very aware of his presence.

"Excuse me," she said, pushing her chair back & standing up. Maan looked over his newspaper at her once, then resumed his reading.

"I'm not hungry today," Geet explained before darting out of the room faster than lightning.

She took a deep breath to compose herself, then retreated upstairs to her room.

She took the nearest book she saw & came back downstairs, heading straight out for the gardens.

________________________________

Winter was very much at its peak. The frost on the ground from the night before still lingered, the trees were still bare, the air was still chilly.

Yet Geet loved it.

She loved the cold air whipping against her cheeks, she loved the sound of frost crunching beneath her shoes.

Content with her surroundings, she sat down on one of the benches, overlooking the rest of the magnificent garden of the house.

She opened her book & began to read, losing herself in the literature which she always admired & had many times become an escape for her.

"Is that interesting?"

Her heart jumped & she dropped the book in surprise. It fell to the floor with a small thud as her eyes rested on the man before her, stood beside the bench with a calm expression on his face.

Maan picked the book up & studied its cover. It was plain black, completely unrevealing of what was embedded inside. He handed it back to Geet.

"Thank you," she said, clutching the book close to her chest.

"You must be cold," he observed.

"It is something I am used to." She kept her eyes fixed ahead, something which irritated Maan greatly.

"Join me for a walk, Miss Geet," he spoke, which compelled Geet to look at him with a bewildered expression on her face.

"I'd rather not, but thank you for the offer."

"It is not an offer, but a request. Will you be so arrogant to decline?"

Geet let out a small sigh & reluctantly stood up, walking over to his side. They began walking; Geet deliberately keeping herself a few steps behind him.

"You must have suffered a truamatic past."

"Please, sir. I do not wish to endulge in those memories. They are something I would rather leave behind."

A small silence followed, as Maan contemplated on what to ask her next, & Geet wondered why he had asked her to join him in the first place.

"Have you ever felt emotionally attached to someone?"

Meera's smiling face immediately came to Geet's mind. She had been more than a friend; she was her sister, her soulmate.

"Yes," Geet replied quietly.

"May I ask who?"

"My best friend Meera. She was my everything. She died from a disease five years ago."

"I'm very sorry to hear that," Maan's voice was laced with sympathy. "But if you'll excuse my frankness, I meant to say have you ever felt... affection for anyone? Been in love?"

"No."

"That was a quick reply."

"Because it's the truth. I am only 18 years old."

"Must age be a factor?"

"Not neccessarily for everyone. And in some cases, age is irrelevant. I was just stating that I feel too young yet to experience love."

"I was roughly about your age when I first experienced love." Maan's eyes cast downwards as he remembered the part of his past which he had successfully blocked out. But which, for some unknown reason, he felt compelled to reveal to the girl before him.
"Her name was Radhika, she was a thing of beauty. I was instantly smitten. She made me feel as if I was basking in the cool breeze of heaven, by her mere presence. After much pursuit, I attained her. I thought I could not have been more happier. She appeared to feel for me the way I felt for her.
It wasn't long after we became engaged. I was convinced she was the one I would spend the rest of my days with.
Until one evening, whilst we had been attending a party, Radhika disappeared somewhere. On my way to find her, I saw her in the arms of another man behind some curtains.
I turned my back on her that day, & I never looked back again."

Geet felt sympathy & sorrow course through her veins upon hearing his painful story.

"I'm very sorry to hear, sir," she replied softly.

Her voice brought a soothing sensation to him, one which he found strange yet completely mesmerising.

"Don't be. She is my past now. And very much like yourself, it is something I do not wish to recall again."

Their steps were in sync now as they remained side by side. They walked quietly for a while, feeling at ease & peace when out of habit, Maan checked his watch then suddenly stopped in his tracks.

"Forgive me but I appear to have lost track of time. I must head back."

Without another word he turned on his heels & strode back, leaving Geet staring after him, still lost in the tranquility his presence had brought to her.

She couldn't sleep.

She twisted & turned in her bed, feeling restless.

Geet was about to get up when she heard something outside of her door. Remaining still, she listened out carefully when she heard the sound of footsteps.

Slow, steady foosteps, & flickering. It sounded like the flame of a candle.

Curious, she got up & crept to her door, her breath caught in her throat. She was about to turn the handle when she heard the sound of the footsteps scurrying, appearing to be going in the opposite way they had arrived.

She opened her door quickly & gasped in horror as she saw the room across the landing glowing from fire.

She ran across the landing, to the other corridors, & thrust the door open.

Maan was oblivious to the fire which spread around him, engulfing his bedsheets.

"Maan sir!" Geet shrieked, & Maan jumped up immediately.

He muttered frustrated profanities under his breath as he slapped the sheets together, attempting to diminish the fire. Geet looked around & saw a jug of water on his bedside table; she grabbed it, handing it to Maan, who then poured it all over his burning bedsheets.

The fire eventually died out. Geet was shaking; whether it was from the cold or the terror of the situation, she did not know.

"Wait here," Maan ordered as he took a quick look at her, put his jacket on then stormed out of the room, locking his door behind him to keep Geet safe.

She stood rooted to the spot, huddling herself & taking shallow breaths.

After a short while Maan reappeared, bolting the door shut behind him. He stopped when he saw Geet, looking ashen white & trembling.

He took his jacket off & stepped closer to Geet. She looked up at him as he wrapped the jacket around her, his hands lingering on her shoulders.

Geet stopped trembling as soon as she felt his half embrace around her. It was only then that she realised what he was wearing. His white shirt was buttoned up halfway, leaving most of his perfectly sculpted chest bare.

She tore her eyes away from his distracting figure & looked downwards, feeling a blush creep up her cheeks but praying it was too dark for Maan to notice.

He did notice. It was dark in the room but he could make out her beautiful features as his eyes trailed over them.

Gently, he released one hand from her shoulder & placed his finger under her chin & tilted her head up so she was looking at him. They both remained lost in the moment when Geet suddenly realised what she was doing & stepped away, causing Maan's hands to fall at his sides.

"I must go sir," she stated hastily & walked to the door.

"Wait."

His voice stopped her, as she felt her heart pick up in double pace.

"You saved my life. Won't you at least let me thank you?"

Geet turned back, as Maan stepped closer to her once more. He held his hand out, prompting her to shake it.

She placed her hands in his & felt his grip tighten around her.

"Thank you," he said, subtly caressing Geet's soft hand with his fingers.

She squirmed her hand, indicating for it to be released. He reluctanly let go, & their fingers lingered on one another before she eventually pulled away.

"Good night sir," she said, taking his jacket off & placing it on the chair to her left before disappearing out of the door.

As closed the door of her room behind her & leant against it, the horror of the night's events faded as she looked down at the hand which had been binded with his. She could still feel the warmth emanating from his touch, & instinctively placed the hand close to her heart.

He took the jacket, noticing that her scent lingered on the fabric. His heart beat faster just thinking about her, & he realised he was being pulled in by a magnetic force she possessed.

He was being pulled in by her.

Should I stop writing this fanfic? I feel as if there's not much interest in it, & there's no point me wasting my time with it, as it does take me ages to update for you guys. I think I probably will discontinue it if the interest dies away.
