DIVIDED BY CITIES: Karisma Kapoor with husband Sunjay Kapur

After hitList carried a story last month on the trouble between Karisma Kapoor and husband Sunjay Kapur, their marriage has taken a turn for the worse.

The two, who have lived apart for months, were hoping to resolve their differences, but the reconciliation didn't happen; after prolonged discussion, Karisma and Sunjay agreed that divorce was the only option.

Karisma's demand

Things came to a head last week when Sunjay came to Mumbai with divorce papers. But Karisma refused to sign them — she said she wanted Rs 7 crore in alimony along with the divorce.

Sunjay's mum came too

Sunjay is currently at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and can't be contacted. A member of his family (who did not wish to be named) confirmed that he was in the city over the weekend. "I am not aware of Lolo asking for Rs 7 crore…. But I know Sunjay and his mother were here last weekend and spent a lot of time with Lolo and the baby."

She loves Mumbai

She said the divorce wouldn't be easy. "We are all hoping for a reconciliation. We know that Sunjay got into this marriage for keeps. He will not give up so easily. The issue between them is simply a Mumbai-Delhi issue. He loves Delhi and she loves Mumbai."

Is he dating?

What about rumours that Sunjay is dating a Delhi model? "That's absurd! Sunjay is not dating anyone, Someone is obviously creating more problems than necessary," fumed our source.

Karisma has always been a private person. But why has Sunjay never spoken out to clear the air? "Because he wants to keep the matter private. He is obsessed with his daughter. You have to watch them together to see how much he adores her."

Despite repeated attempts to contact her, Karisma was unavailable for comment.

Who is Sunjay Kapur?

Karisma's husband Sunjay Kapur is the managing director of Sona Koyo Steering Company, a part of the Sona Group, of which his father Dr Surinder Kapur is chairman. Sunjay's maternal grandfather, the late Raunaq Singh, set up the Apollo Tyres empire.

The Kapurs' partners are Koyo Seiko, the overseas leader in power steering systems. Sona Koyo is participating in the market by supplying the mechanical parts in electronic power steering systems.

The investment in the EOU in Sriperumbudur has been close to $4 million.

Sona Koyo also has a 21 per cent stake in French firm Fuji Autotech. In an interview last year, Dr Surinder Kapur said their company expected to do business worth € 10 million by 2008.

Sunjay has two sisters, Superna Motwane and Mandira Kapur. Mandira is Karisma's old friend; Superna is the editor of the fashion magazine, L'Officiel.
