Come to think of it, Team Anna has been dishing out everything you would want to see on TV - action, thrill, star power and if you have a wry sense of humour, some comedy too.
So, it should come as no surprise that everyone in the country is tuning in to watch the new age hero. Now, the TRPs also speak for it. While the TRPs of news channels have almost doubled since Anna Hazare's call for protest, the TRPs of reality shows and soaps have taken a dip in the same time period.
"Yeh toh hona hi tha," says Ravindra Gautam, who is presently directing the popular TV show "Bade Achhe Laggte Hai" on Sony TV, apart from "Parichay - Nayi Zindagi Kay Sapno Ka" on Colors. "This is a movement that doesn't happen everyday. And with people keen on keeping themselves updated about Anna Hazare, the TRPs for General Entertainment Channels (GECs) were bound to fall this week," he says adding that every channel was prepared for a dip in TRPs. "That was the reason why most shows have simply taken their current track ahead instead of adding any extra punch to the story line," surmises Gautam.

A thought echoed by TV producer Rajan Shahi. "Anna is bigger than any other show on TV right now," he says, adding, "The last few days have seen almost the entire nation involved in debates over the anti-graft agitation. While some people were out on the roads to support Anna, others were glued to their television sets watching latest news updates on him. So, serials ko TRPs milti toh milti kahan se? Pehle log soaps ke beech mein news dekhte thay and now they are watching soaps when there is a break on news channels."
"There were so many new shows being launched on different channels that could have done very well, but since they coincided with the anti-corruption movement heralded by Anna, they did not take off as well as they were expected to. "Kaun Banega Crorepati" on Sony, "Parichay - Nayi Zindagi Kay Sapno Ka" on Colors and "Dharmpatni" on Imagine TV - new shows all - opened on a decent note, but they could have done much better," says the marketing head of a GEC, on condition of anonymity. He adds that "repeat telecasts of various shows on weekends have done surprisingly well this time."
The India-England test series could have had the potential to divert eyeballs away from news channels, but India's poor performance quashed any such hopes.
Commenting on the TRP trends, producer Siddharth Tewary, says, "We expected this dip ever since the Anna Hazare movement became a nationwide hit. And actually nothing could have helped in salvaging the situation - no maha episodes and no new tracks."
