Who's hot? Who's not? Who's the next big thing? Which is the movie to watch out in 2011? Filmfare polled campuses around Mumbai and the country. Here's what we discovered...
With our movies getting younger and younger, small wonder that the demographics of our audience is getting younger too. Filmmakers are bending backwards catering to the bubblegum generation. So what does our GenNext aspire for? What kind of movies do they watch? Who's their favourite actor? Who do they think will make a splash in the coming years? It was the perfect time for an opinion poll among campuses.
Collegians and their choices can open a Pandora's Box. While some answers were predictable, some of them really took us by surprise. Imagine Katrina Kaif giving Kareena Kapoor and Kajol stiff competition in acting or Shah Rukh Khan being toppled by Hrithik Roshan. While Madhuri Dixit still rules our hearts, another legend is shown the door by the students. Phew! Are we amazed? Hell yeah!
Also our campus dudes and dudettes have their own set of prerogatives. If 19-year-old Ravi Deshpande digs big time on masala films, 20 something Divya Rathi likes her arty flicks. But the general consensusof the college crowd is that content is king. It doesn't matter to them if the film is big or small; if it has the A-listers or newbies, as long as the content is strong. Hence, Udaan recieves a thumbs up. So does Dabangg. They want full on entertainment but don't like mindless movies.
Read on to find out what the country's youth thinks about our films and the stars. We hope you have as much fun reading the survey as we had carrying it out….
He has the Midas touch! His CV reads like Ripley's Believe It Or Not. The actor hasn't taken a misstep in the last five years. Colossal hits like Rang De Basanti, Taare Zameen Par, Ghajini and 3 Idiots have slalomed him to the top of Bollywood's ecosystem. Consequently, our collegiansare enamoured by Aamir's cinematic brilliance. 31 per cent think he's the best we have.
Shah Rukh Khan, despite the super hit My Name is Khan polled in 10 per cent less votes than his archrival.
Boy! She has done it again. It's unfathomable how Kajol's popularity never seems to cease. She is one woman who is fire and ice at the same time. Supreme acting skills and that breathtaking beauty, college guys still go gaga over her. Two kids in tow, this Bengali actress is roaring away to glory.
Katrina Kaif and Priyanka Chopra reach the finishing line together. Katrina's acting abilities have not always been praiseworthy, but when it comes to popularity, there's no one beating her. 7 Khoon Maaf may not have set cash registers ringing but Priyanka Chopra's acting capers have put her up there.
Kareena Kapoor may think she's the No. 1 but our poll tells a different story. She shares the bronze with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Vidya Balan.
Aishwarya, on the other hand shows that marriage hasn't made a dent in her popularity.
Ishqiya and No One Killed Jessica have revived interest in Vidya Balan.
It was the biggest hit of last year. Dabangg created a tsunami at the box office that simply drowned lesser competition. And that reflects in our poll. So 28 per cent of our cool dudes think Dabangg was the best film last year. Incidentally the Filmfare Awards voters thought so too.
The critically-acclaimed Udaan too appealed to a section of the teens.
The others that appealed to their sensibilities included My Name Is Khan, Raajneeti and Band Baaja Baaraat.
Worst Film
When three out of four of your movies feature in the worst film category then buddy it's time to do a serious rethink about where your career is headed. It's the red alert for Akshay Kumar. Better pull up your socks and pronto! His biggest release, Tees Maar Khan, has the dubious distinction of being the worst film of 2010.
