Part Twenty-Nine

The couple walked outside in the cool night air. Their dinner had ended abruptly earlier that evening. However now Naina was in jail and Boris was returning to Interpol headquators for his next assignment.

Khanak shuddered due to the cold. Shantanu gazed down at his wife. She looked very beautiful but cold as well. He pulled her close and rubbed her back to help her stay warm. She gazed at him dreamily.

A horse carriage came into view. The driver was sitting having a cup of coffee in the back of the rig.

"Would you two like a ride?," he quipped.

The couple exchanged glances.

"Yes we would. You can drink your coffee first," Shantanu said.

The man gulped it down.

"I am all done. You two get settled and we shall be on the way," he said.

Shantanu helped Khanak sit down. She wrapped her pallu closely around herself. He plopped down beside her. She grinned.

The man looked at him with a bright smile.

" You two newlyweds?"

The couple laughed and shook their heads.

" Did you run away from home?," he asked.

" No actually we have been married three years," Khanak stated with glee.

" God bless you two then. Hard to see a couple like yourself that is still in so much love," the man quipped.

Shantanu directed him towards their hotel.

Shantanu got off first and then helped Khanak down. They paid the man and wished him luck.

They arrived in their room. Shantanu locked the door. Khanak turned to meet his eyes. She blushed and turned away from his intense gaze. He approached her from behind and she swooned when she felt his warm breath on her neck.

He kissed her shoulder and gripped her waist.

Eight months later'

Khanak placed a hand on her growing abdomen. The baby could arrive any day in the next month. Arushi was finally realizing her Chachi could not pick her up and play for as long as she was able to some months before.

Shantanu was trying to limit his caseload for the coming weeks as he wanted to be there when she went into labor.

" I bet you'll just freak out and call for Mom and Bhabhi,"Khanak teased him.

Shantanu shook his head.

" No way. Shantanu Khandlewal is always in control," he declared.

" Shantanu Khandlewal the lawyer is in control but not the father to be!," she teased as she pinched his nose.

He frowned and turned to face the other way.

"Shantanu kya hua? Bache jaise behave kyun kare ho?," she asked.

He turned towards her slightly.

" I am just giving you a preview of what our child will do when he's upset," he stated,

She rolled her eyes.

" Shantanu we practically helped raise Arushi so far. I know how children can be. Also I have dealt with numerous children over at Saint Mary's," she said.

"Haha but you were never with them 24/7 nor did you have to change their nappies every three hours," he hissed.

"Shantanu don't worry we shall be fine. Besides we have the rest of the family to give us a break whenever we need one," she assured him.

He was about to speak more but then the phone rang. He gave her a longing glance as he took the call.

He returned a few minutes later looking a bit glum.

"I have to go for a few days to Delhi. I'll try to be back soon," he said.

She caressed his cheek.

"SK don't worry. I am not alone here. My parents, your parents, Dadi, Akshay Bhaiya, Khushboo Bhabhi, Urmila Bhabhi aur Jatin Bhaiya, sab hain yahaan per mere saath," she assured him.

" Accha theek hai. However if anything happens I want you to have someone call me ok?"

"Yes baba I'll have someone call you right away if I think I am ready to have the baby," she assured him.

He pressed a quick peck on her forehead. He touched her abdomen.

"Be good for your Mommy. Don't you dare come out until Daddy comes back," he ordered the unborn child.

Khanak giggled and shook her head back at him.
