Anurag Kashyap considers GANDU a classic

The film is not yet released in India but has been making waves elsewhere. The latest is that it has won the Grand Jury Award for a new director at the Seattle International Film Festival (SIFF). It was first shown at the South Asian International Film Festival (SAIFF), New York, and was also part of the Berlinale 2011 Panorama section. Its title has generated immense buzz and the low budget digitally shot film has reportedly done very well internationally. The filmmaker got a cash award of $2,500/- at SIFF alone. It has now found a great fan and supporter in India's new age film icon Anurag Kashyap, who called it a classic and rued the fact that the film can never be released in India because of the CBFC's (The Censor Board) archaic rules. He was speaking at the 'Samvaad' conference organised by CII and CBFC.

The film has graphic sex in terms of a scene where the film's protagonist Gandu is shown masturbating. A Kolkata based director Q (Quashik) has directed it and if it has found support from an expected quarter like Anurag Kashyap, there are many who have grave doubts about the film's cinematic value, including the one generally considered the most intelligent and cinematically literate among all the Bollywood Khans. Those who wish to watch the film on a wide screen will have to wait till October for MAMI's Mumbai Film Festival that may probably include it in its programme. The festival has previously had a controversial film like ANTICHRIST by Danish filmmaker Lars von Trier to close its 2009 edition. That film too had graphic sex and extremely violent scenes.
