Tum Kaun Ho?

A Maaneet Fan Fic

Chapter 46
Apr. 22, 2011 11:45 pm

Geet was very confused. She couldn't figure out what was going on with Maan. And she was sure that something was going on, at least, pretty sure. All week she had felt like he was looking at her. Yes, he looked at her all the time, but this was a different look, some how. There was something in his eyes that would disappear as soon as her eyes met his, something that she couldn't understand. It was so fleeting that she barely saw it and for most of the week, even thought she was imagining things.

The firs time that she noticed anything was the day after she got her drivers license. She had been cooking dinner after making sure that JD and Stella were under Nakul's supervision. As far as she had been aware, Maan was still in his office working. But he hadn't been.

Apr. 20, 2011 5:40 pm

Geet was just finishing stirring the salsa into the skillet and about to put the lid back on, when she felt a pair of strong, hard arms snake around her waist from the back. She was so shocked that she dropped her spoon on the floor as she gave a small yelp. Of course she knew exactly who the culprit was, and determined to give him a piece of her mind, but he brought his face next to hers, nuzzling her cheek with his nose.

Everything that she had been about to say disappeared when she felt his lips press gently against her face. "Maan," she uttered breathlessly, "what...what are you doing?"

"I'm just watching my Mishti cook," came the low reply.

"M...Mishti?"

"Yes, don't you know what Mishti means?" Geet shook her head no.

"Well, someone has made a lot of rules about how I can and can't behave in front of JD, and as I didn't know how to say 'sweetheart' in Hindi, so..."

Geet blushed, but then thought over all of Maan's words and quickly pushed him away. "Maan, what are you doing? What if JD comes and sees? Anyway, why would you want to watch me cooking? I thought you were working in the office."

"Why would I want to work in the office when I can spend some time with my Mishti?"

Maan was just about to take Geet in his arms again, when she noticed that the pan was boiling. With a short exclamation she quickly turned down the heat and began stirring again. Then she put the lid on and turned back towards Maan with her arms crossed.

"You almost spoiled my efforts!"

"I'm sorry," said Maan, not sounding very sorry at all. "What are you cooking, anyway?"

"Spanish rice."

"You know Geet, I was wondering, do you ever get tired of cooking? You know we could always hire someone else."

"What, are you hinting that you don't like my cooking?" Geet questioned in mock anger.

"No, no, I just thought that if you were getting tired of how much time you spent in the kitchen that we could do something about it, if you wanted, that is."

Something about the way Maan spoke caused Geet to look at him more closely. She could see something strange in his eyes for just a moment, but thought that it was because he had taken her question seriously. She lost no time in assuring him that she had no problems with doing the cooking for the family, and that most of the time she quite enjoyed it. This response seemed to satisfy him, for he right away went back to his naughty antics, until Geet threatened to call Dadi to rescue her.

Apr. 22, 2011 11:46 pm

The incident in the kitchen was not the only one where Maan behaved a little odd. As she got a little more comfortable in her bed, she remembered what happened that Thursday, when she told him about her plans with Pinky.

Apr. 21, 2011 4:35 pm

"Maan, my friend Pinky wants to get together tonight, as her husband is out of town, and I was wondering if you would help me out by reading JD his story before he goes to bed tonight."

Maan was busy writing an email, and didn't hear what Geet said at first. She had to call his name two more times before he paid attention. When he was finally looking at her, Geet again told him about Pinky and her request. Maan's reaction was immediate, and not what Geet was expecting.

"Geet, you want to go out? But, I was hoping we could spend some time together. We hardly have any time alone any more. I mean you're always busy with JD or Stella, or something around the house."

"Hold on just a minute, Mr. Maan Singh Khurana. Are you telling me that I can't spend some time with my friend, a friend that I haven't seen for more than a month, since we've both been so busy? Are you telling me that I can't have one night just to myself?"

Maan quickly realized how his words must have sounded and hastened to undo the damage he could see beginning to form. "No, Geet, that's not what I meant. Of course you can spend time with your friend. I didn't mean it like how it sounded, I just miss spending time alone with you, that's all."

Geet didn't let him off the hook so easily. In fact, she wouldn't even give him a smile until he said that he would even take care of the entire process of getting JD ready and into bed, just so that she could really have the evening free. Only when she had his solemn promise did she relent and give him a quick hug before getting out her phone to call Pinky and confirm their plans.

Apr. 21, 2011 11:22 pm

"That Geet. What am I going to do with her? Staying out late. Not answering her phone. Doesn't care if I worry or not. How long does it take to come from Avondale anyway? Only two days since she got her license and she's driving at night. She told me that driving in the dark is scary, but she's driving in the dark, unless something happened. No, I'm sure nothing happened, but I still don't like that she's out alone. I should never have let her drive herself. No, I should never have let her go period. If she's not home in five minutes, I'm calling the police. Wait, I'll try her phone one more time."

Maan quickly took his phone out and dialed Geet's number, even as he continued to pace up and down the front hallway. As soon as he heard her sweet hello he blasted, "Geet, where are you? Do you know how worried I've been? You haven't been answering your phone. Why didn't you answer me?"

"Maan," came the patient reply, "I can't talk on the phone while I'm driving. I would have thought that was obvious."

"So, where are you now?"

"Coming in from the garage."

Maan immediately ended the call and rushed to meet Geet. He wasn't the first one there, as Stella also realized she was home and went running and barking, looking for Geet's attention. Geet smiled and bent down to give Stella a good petting. Stella licked Geet's hands and face, while she just laughed in response.

"Geet! Geet, how could you come home so late?" Maan rushed up to Geet and pulled her into his arms for a tight embrace. "I was expecting you over half an hour ago. When..."

"Maan," said Geet excitedly and with a big smile, totally ignoring his words, "you will never guess, you will never believe...I'm so happy I can hardly believe it. PInky is pregnant. Pregnant! More than three months pregnant and she only told me tonight. I just can't believe it. It seems like it was just yesterday we were in school, and now she's having her first baby. You know, we talked for hours tonight, but it seemed like just minutes. I could have stayed another four hours, but it is late and I'm really tired. I'm going to go to bed now. Goodnight."

Geet gave Maan a peck on the cheek before pulling out of his embrace and heading towards the stairs with Stella. Maan just stood where he was, trying to get his mind around what had happened. Geet had been going on and on about her friend, not even caring how worried he had been about her. He didn't like that, not at all.

Apr. 22, 2011 4:31 pm

"JD, how many times have I told you that Uncle is still working when you come home from school? You shouldn't disturb him."

"But GT, I wanted to show Uncle my bunny picture. I did such a good job coloring, Teacher said so."

Geet looked at JD's little face as she walked up to the office door and totally melted. "Fine, go and show him then. But if he's busy, then you will have to wait until later."

"I already went in, GT, but Uncle isn't there."

"What?" Geet looked into the office and saw that JD was correct. Maan was no where. She knew that he had no meetings today, so he should still be at home.

Giving JD a playful smile, she said, "Well, it looks like he's playing hide and seek. Should we go find him?"

Apr. 22, 2011 4:35 pm

"GT, I found him! He's in his room!"

Geet came quickly to Maan's room when she heard JD's voice, where what she saw had her saying, "Maan?" with a clear question in her voice.

"Uncle, are you going somewhere?" asked JD, seeing Maan put clothes into his suitcase.

"Yes, JD, I have to go on a trip to France for a week."

"A trip to France? But you never said anything."

"It's last minute, Geet. I got a call while you were gone to pick up JD. I have to go to take care of some things regarding that chocolate company that bought a controlling share in. I'm flying out from O'Hare tonight."

"But, Uncle you're going to miss all the fun Easter stuff, candy, egg hunt, Mass, GT's food, everything!"

Maan looked at the pout on JD's face and went over next to him, picking him up in his strong arms. Giving him a hug, he said, "I'm sorry, JD, but it can't be helped. I have to go on this trip. It's important for my business. It's only for a week and then I'll be back."

Apr. 22, 2011 11:50 pm

Geet twisted and turned in her bed. Her mind kept going around and around, trying to figure out what it was that was bothering her about Maan's behavior. Him interrupted her cooking and not wanting her to spend time with a friend instead of him were not strange in and of themselves, but she couldn't help but feel that something was strange. And now there was this trip to France. Again, a short notice business trip was nothing out of the ordinary for MSK, but nonetheless, Geet was bothered.

She knew that some of her upset came naturally from the fact that Maan was going to be gone for a week. Since she had started living at the mansion, there was only one time when she hadn't seen Maan at least once a day. That was almost exactly six months ago when he had also gone on a trip to France. Since that time, Geet didn't think that they had gone more than half a day without having at least a glimpse of each other. He'd only been gone for a few hours and she was already missing him. Already missing him and feeling a little worried.

She was starting to worry that maybe Maan was upset with her. When he had left to board his flight they had hugged and Geet was expecting that he would give her one of his soul melting kisses, but he hadn't, or at least he hadn't meant to. Maan hadn't said anything, but just began pulling out of the embrace, without so much as a brief peck on her forehead. Well, Geet couldn't let him leave without a proper goodbye, so she reached her hands around his neck and pressed her lips tightly to his. He didn't resist the kiss, but too soon for Geet, he ended it and made his way towards the security line.

It really bothered Geet that Maan had been going to leave without giving her a kiss goodbye. It was just two days previous that he had been behaving naughtily in the kitchen with her, so why the sudden change? It made her wonder why he was really going on this trip. It seemed unlikely that he would have needed to leave immediately, which made her think that perhaps he was using the trip as an excuse to get away. Geet wondered if she had done something wrong. All these thoughts made it very difficult to sleep. She was definitely very confused.

Apr. 22, 2011 11:55 pm

Maan was very confused. He just didn't know what to do about Geet. Every time he would make plans to talk to her, something would come in the way. Sometimes, he felt like God was laughing at him, putting all these little, annoying obstacles in his way. If it wasn't JD, then it was Dadi. If it wasn't Dadi, then it was an important overseas client calling at odd hours. If it wasn't a client, then it was Geet's friend. Finally, if it wasn't any of those things, it was an unexpected, unavoidable business trip.

Maan was actually quite frustrated by the whole thing. He had been trying to follow his brother's advice, only to meet with complete failure. Failure and MSK did not go well together. In fact, the only thing that Maan had ever failed at, was the same thing he was having trouble with now.

The issues that Maan was having trying to work towards his proposal of Geet, couldn't help but remind him of the last time he planned a proposal. Of course, the two situations were entirely different. Last time Maan had assumed that Sameera would say yes, and if he had not discovered that she was only with him for her own disgusting motives, the unfortunate engagement would have taken place. He was certain that if his plans had gone as he expected, Sameera would have agreed enthusiastically. He didn't have that same certainty about Geet.

He knew that unlike Sameera, Geet truly cared for him. What he didn't know was how deep did that caring run, and how permanent it was. He didn't even know for sure if Geet was interested in marriage. A lot of young people these days didn't think marriage was necessary, they just lived together. He really didn't believe Geet felt that way, but because they hadn't had a conversation, Maan couldn't be sure.

Maan was afraid to have that conversation. After his previous attempts had been thwarted by circumstance, he'd lost much of his nerve. He just didn't feel he could come right out and ask her thoughts on marriage without risking scaring her away. Perhaps that was a foolish thought on his part, but he couldn't keep the fear from surfacing. He was afraid that if she wasn't yet ready to consider marriage, that if he even mentioned the word before she was willing, she would refuse. After all, her past wasn't one that made it easy for her to move ahead with life. This was something that Maan understood very well.

He had been disappointed in love once before. That had turned him into a person that he barely recognized. Someone who slaved night and day for his business, lived only for work, but had no joy in his life. All that changed with Geet. Life was worth living again, dreams were worth dreaming again, and suddenly there was a world outside of his office. Everything began and ended with Geet. If Geet refused him, he would die. His body might still be alive, but it would be an empty shell, a walking corpse with no soul.

Though Dev's advice had been good, Maan was no good at trying to follow it. He just didn't seem to have the conversation knack, at least not when the conversation was important. Since he wasn't willing to give up, he decided to take a different strategy. If he could get enough indication that Geet would view a proposal favorably, he would pop the question. His new plan now was to observe Geet and see her reactions to various situations. He would then categorize those reactions as either supporting marriage, or not supporting marriage.

Maan thought that he would be able to sleep on the plane, but since it seemed that he would be able to do that, he determined to start his list. Thinking over the past week he was able to come up with the following:

Geet's actions that suggest no interest in marriage
Forgoing private driving lesson and chances to spend time together
Spending more time with JD, Dadi and Stella than with her boyfriend (i.e. Me)
Driving herself to her friend's house at night, instead of asking someone else (i.e. Me)
Using JD as an excuse to be less romantic (i.e. Not wanting me to hug or kiss her whenever I feel like it)
No hinting about marriage or taking the relationship to the next step (Don't girls usually do things like that?)
Didn't make any argument about me taking a sudden trip out of the country (i.e. Didn't seem all that upset that I will be away from her)

Geet's actions that suggest possible interest in marriage
Not overly concerned with the future suggesting she is happy with the present situation (i.e. She likes being my girlfriend)
Very well bonded with the whole family, Dadi, JD, Dev & Naintara all love her and she them (i.e. She already fulfills the role of bahu, maa and bhabhi, so what would change?)
Doesn't have a problem with cooking for the family (i.e. Another example of acting like my wife would)
Was very excited that her friend was pregnant (i.e. Means she thinks babies are a good thing and maybe she'd like one of her own?)
Never pushes me away when I want to be close, unless she thinks JD is looking (i.e. Can't resist me, and might agree to displays of affection in front of JD if we are married)
Kissed me herself right before we parted (i.e. Likely she will miss me, she just didn't say so)

"Great observations, Maan Singh Khurana. Now with such even lists you're no closer to an answer than you were before. Well, you'll just have to keep observing, which you can't do until you get back home. So, just put everything aside for now, and try to get some sleep. Try not to think about Geet too much, or miss her too much...Who am I kidding? I'm going to miss that girl like crazy. Maan, don't forget to call her first thing after the plane lands."
