Yes. In the written world, you have the flexibility to use narration, which is missing in the visual world. There you have dialogs (with others, or one's own thoughts), expressions/acting and settings. That's where the role of a good screenplay comes. But sometimes exact translation from the written words to the screen is not possible.

I had felt it very strongly in one scene of the movie "Namesake", when Gogol/Nikhil is upset that Moushumi casually told her friends about his name change. In the novel, there is a narration of how Nikhil feels. And it is a a very subtle feeling as to how it could be something so casual for her. It was something very important to him. This was in the narration, not in a dialog.

In the movie he confronts her, and that subtlety is lost. It becomes more about why did you reveal something personal to your friends.

Mishthi, I totally agree with what you say.

I love the visual medium. It is my first love. More times than one, i have picked up a book because the visual has been very impressive. Sometimes both have been different and good and sometimes one is better than the other.

It is strange that you brought up Namesake. I first saw the movie and then read the book. And i enjoyed the book at a different level but one scene in that movie was very touching and absolutely breathtaking for me.

She starts her life playing the sitar. Her face reflects a youthfulness of looking forward to life and all that it entails when she does not know what is in store for her.

And in the end in that scene when she again plays the sitar wearing the whitish sari and the abandon with which she plays the sitar. She has gone through the whole circle of life and come back. I thought that was the most poignant scene of all and that touched me but the book could not bring out for me the poignancy of that scene.

That last scene encompassed for me the peace that she felt at completing her circle and coming back.

And in your OS you touched on aspects of the MC which i have really felt. The depression and the attempt to suicide touched a chord. Maybe that is one of the reasons I have felt so sorry for Geet post MC though I had been so angry with her so many times for her silly behaviour post-marriage.

Mishthi - A great one. I am truly touched. I wish they had shown atleast a bit of this even in the show. I would have loved it if they had gotten over the grief of loosing their baby together. What a shame. But you gave me everything that I wanted to watch on screen. Brilliant.

Thanks Priti. I personally wish MC had never happened and I were still watching the show. 😊 But even post MC, their treatment of the thing has not been great. So, an OS to calm myself and others down!

Geet almost attempting suicide is too grim.....I am glad you are venting out your frustration constructively.....I wish they could have shown Maan and Geet getting closer over MC rather than the distance driving them apart.....

Yeah Deeps. It's sad that even the most progressive of the Indian serials do not address issues like these. Post MC trauma in this case. I have seen depression very closely (though not in the context of MC) and I know how it breaks even the strongest of the people. So, I thought of exploring that angle.
