When the femme's not fatale enough

What to do when there isn't an actress good enough to fit the character's shoes?

I was watching William Wyler's sublime Roman Holiday on TV this Sunday, and immaculate as that film doubtless was, I couldn't help but reflect on Wyler's fantastically good fortune.

As Princess Ann wakes up in the journalist's bedroom she had assumed was an elevator, she takes a while to get accustomed to things, looking around blissfully blankly.

It is a frame that looks delightful only because of Audrey Hepburn. Having the most beautiful woman in the history of eyesight is an advantage no director should forego, and so the lens, justifiably yet indulgently, lingers far longer than it normally should on that magnificent, clueless face. Wyler's leading man, Gregory Peck, is also the stuff of sculpturable legend.

Wyler could afford to let his camera look at his leads more than usual, simply because of how impossibly good-looking they were. And so it is that we sit back and allow the camera to caress the protagonists even as they play off each other perfectly, the director more than content to bask in the perfection of his cosmetically perfect casting.

Yet what when you don't have the right man or woman for the job? Vishal Bhardwaj's highly ambitious misstep, Saat Khoon Maaf, suffers mostly because of bad writing, but also because his leading lady, Priyanka Chopra, instead of ever internalising her performance, wears it doggedly on the outside.

It is the sort of 'look-I'm-acting' performance that allows certain people to opine that she's actually working hard ('ooh, she's fat and grey and is cackling SO loudly') but never quite lets the audience connect with the character.

A 'confident' performance is far from being an assured one. A shame, because Ruskin Bond's Susanna deserved better.

But who else could it have been? Instinctively in love with Vishal's Macbeth adaptation, we yell Tabu. Yet the Tabu of today, of Toh Baat Pakki, isn't the Tabu we all flipped for in Maqbool.

Sure she was great in Cheeni Kum, but the Tabu of Maqbool (and, to some degree, the Tabu of Meenaxi and Astitva) has long been sidelined by an industry out to find the next Shimmying Shiela. Tabu circa 2005 would be perfect, but do we have any options today?

Maybe, just maybe, with a director like Bhardwaj sternly shoving her out of her comfort zone, Kareena could do it.

There are few current mainstream actresses as self-aware as Kapoor now she doesn't feel the need to wear her character's 'confidence' around her like a pretty shawl and even lesser are as surreally, almost spectrally, stunning.

Her skin the colour of moonlight enchanted us in his Othello adaptation earlier, and that ethereal, unworldly quality might have helped Bhardwaj's new film.

But the options, it must be said, are very limited. There are several pretty heroines without enough acting chops, some strong actresses lacking in the unbridled sexuality Susanna needs, some potentially interesting but mostly untested ingenues, and very few truly gorgeous ladies. Bhardwaj's first choice for the role, Aishwarya Rai, would have doubtless lifted the film purely by putting her face in it, but is that perhaps too big a price to pay?

What then is a director to do? With a killer character but no actress around, should he compromise with casting his leading lady? Or hold his horses till the right cinematic muse comes around? It is a tough call, and both options require great gumption. Tragically, in Bombay, it's never open season on actresses.

Interesting article! He forgot to mention Kangana. I think she would have been good in SKM too! She plays those psycho characters so well lol. It just comes naturally to her...it seems!

Yep... Have to agree 100% with that....Tabu circa 2005 would be perfect ..
Tabu is the only one who could have carried this character.... Again not the Tabu of today... Like he said the Tabu of 2005...

Desu...I think what he means is Tabu was at her best and was at her peak in doing the off beat films during that time frame... Like she had Maqbool, Meenaxi and after that Astitva....
Her talent was utilised to the maximum and she delivered too...
And present day scenario is different.... She is no longer the sought after one for the hatke movies... We have Vidya filling the gap in most of them and what Tabu is offered is mediocre stuff like Toh Baath Pakki etc..
And what he means by 'sidelined by an industry out to find the next Shimmying Shiela.'...
is that she has been sidelined in the quest to look out for more glam dolls...

well...tabu is a gr8 actress...but not that versatile...her dialoge delivery is a bit iffy and shes not the best one when it comes to comic roles...but when it comes to complex layered characters...SHE OWNS THEM...maachis, astitva, chandni bar, maqbool, namesake...she even brings credibility to a role as simple as the one she did in cheeni kum...so if SKM was done by tabu...i cannot imagine how good the product would have been...i guess the role needed a young girl though..

the reason why he differenciates between the 2005 tabu and todays tabu is coz these days..shes not selecting roles which suit her/ accentuate her acting abilities to the max....i wonder why directors wont sign her anymore...sure shes not young or anything..but shes beautiful and can kick some serious ass with her acting...strange...

But is it Tabu's fault that she is not getting good offers/roles? I feel like what Maddy said...now those roles are going to Vidya or younger actresses. Even Raja mentions how the industry kicked her out or something like that! Sad! Talent is not important in bollywood! And also I feel like with Vidya...she is new and there is a lot of buzz and interest around her! So that's why directors would offer her the films rather than Tabu. Vidya is excellent though! She is a great actress! Tabu...it seems like she is not gonna be back anytime soon!

Popularity > Talent!

It took Sudhir to shove kareena into a chameli. A govind Nilani to get her to do Dev. Vishal was a pro at getting kareena to be Dolly Mishra in Omkara. And Imtiaz her the role ofa lifetime with JWM.
It would be simply exciting to watch what a maker liek Vishal can do with her again. Please Vishal, shove her outta that commercial zone.

Raja sen is a cutiepie... i think bebo is in her best form these days.. her acting has been top notch in every movie.. since JWM.. its just that she is not picking any meaty roles.. her last meaty role was kurbaan... she needs to pick significant roles.. about who could or who couldn't have done SKM.. well thats up for specutation.. but it was a wasted opportunity.. it was a taylor made performance oriented role for an actress.. and its disappointing to see it getting wasted.. in sense neither did the movie get appreciated by critics.. and it bombed at boxoffice too.
