Part 12
"Le' eh bhi koi gal hui' Sunday ko bhi kaam'" Rano complained as she applied butter on the toast standing near the dining table next to Geet, who was listlessly munching on her breakfast. She had hardly slept last night and could feel butterflies in her stomach as the designated time came closer. "Rano' shaant ho jao' ulta humme toh khush hona chahiye ki humari beti itne bade project pe Khurana Group ke CEO ko assist kar rahi hai" Mohinder said beaming at Geet. "Toh? Arre pehle toh Monday se friday tak iske aane ka koi waqt nahi hota' ab Saturday-Sunday bhi kaam' waise hi jab se is naye boss ke saath kaam karne lagi hai (stroking Geet's hair) kitni gumsum ho gayi hai" Rano said ruefully while Geet choked. Was that true, she wondered. Quickly making her drink some water, Rano continued, "Dekha theek se nashta bhi nahi andar jaata iske" Geet looked a little troubled and finally intervened, "Nahi Maa' its nothing like that. Aur phir maine is project ke liye kitni mehnat ki hai' Bauji aap hi samjhaiye na" said Geet turning to her father. Mohinder shook his head, "wohi toh kar raha hu beta' but your mom is just impossible at times" Rano gave a stern look to Mohinder and then turned to Geet, "Haan haan' pata hai' ek tu aur ek tere Bauji' bas tumhi dono toh sahi hote ho is ghar main' (Geet tried to say something but Rano raised her hand to stop her) Bas kuch kehne ki zaroorat nahi. Achcha sun' Dhyan se jana and take good care of yourself. Aur haan der mat karna' phone karna' waqt pe khaana kha le na'" Mohinder shook his head and muttered to himself, "ab pata chala Geet ko itna bolne ki adat kisse lagi hai" Geet muffled a laugh while Rano looked at her husband crossly, "kya kaha aapne?", Mohinder coughed as he said, "Nahi main toh bas yehi keh raha tha ki hum Geet ki bidai nahi kar rahi' usne sham ko wapis aa jana hai" Rano made an annoying face while Geet blushed a little at her father's remark. She had ordered herself to not to think about him lest she made things look fishy to her parents but Mohinder's innocent comment made her more conscious of the trip and him. She had tried to put an enthusiastic face but felt a nervous wreck inside. It was after all their first trip together.

Holding her purse, Geet anxiously fidgeted with her dupatta and cellphone as she waited for the office car to come and pick her. Mr. Gupta had instructed her to wait by the gates of her colony by 10 in the morning. "Hey Babaji aaj pata nahi kya hone wala hai' meri madat karna" she prayed while waiting. A few minutes later a black porche halted right in front of her. Unsure, Geet looked at the car but then stepped aside. The tainted glasses prevented her having a look at the insides of the car. The driver inside the car honked but Geet paid no heed, instead kept fidgeting with her cell phone. Moments later the driver side door opened. "Cellphone se tum gadi main beth kar bhi khel sakti ho Geet" said an annoyed looking Maan as he stepped out of his car. Startled, "Aap?" Geet asked. Maan rolled his eyes, this girl was impossible, "Gadi main betho Geet, we are getting late" he said as he sat back in the car. However, Geet was hesitant. She just couldn't seem to decide whether she should be sitting in the passenger seat in front or the back seat. Thinking something, she decided on the safer bet and after getting into the the backseat pulled the door shut, startling Maan out of his wits. Maan looked at her uncertainly from the rear view mirror while she pretended to concentrate on the view outside. "Indeed a great start!" sighed Maan and got out of the car once again. Coming over to her side, he pulled the door open and bending a little said with his peculiar attitude, "Main aapka driver nahin hu Madam. Aage chalo" Pouting, "Lekin" Geet began but the look in his eyes made her to comply as he simply stepped back to give her space. Once she was in the passenger seat beside his, he helped her with the seatbelt, brushing his fingers against the bare skin of her arms making her shudder. Shutting the door, he moved towards his side and settled himself back in the driver's seat. As he turned the engine on, he looked at her giving her the most endearing smile on the earth before politely asking, "Chale?". Mesmerized by his smile, she could simply manage to nod her agreement anticipating' praying for the beginning of their journey towards togetherness.

Back to present
"Passengers for the Indian Airlines flight 204, are requested to head towards the terminal 3" the announcement pulled her out of her reverie making her conscious of her surroundings. Picking her handbag, she made her way towards the terminal 3. What an irony her life was being' the part of the journey she was reliving right now had brought them closer, however the journey she was taking right now' the path that lay ahead of her right now, would take her away from him forever. As she got herself checked-in, she looked behind once' she was leaving Delhi' she was leaving him' she was loosing herself here' But as she felt the old lady behind her nudging her forward, with a heavy heart, she turned her back to everything that was hers and quickly boarded the flight.
-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-
To ward off her memories, Maan tried to immerse himself in work. But nothing helped. His thoughts kept drifting back to her. He felt restless. He had felt her presence around him. After Sameera left, he had turned back half expecting to see her standing behind him but she wasn't there. How was it possible for her to be there? It was the first day after her wedding after all... wouldn't she be enjoying and relishing her post-wedding rituals with her husband, he thought scornfully. But then what was it that had prompted him to look back? What was it inside him that was asking him to go for her? He opened the chest drawer of his desk and brushed his fingers over her bracelet that had once fallen off her hand' He then threw his head back in defeat, as he wondered where this soul-rending intensity of his love for her was going to take him to.
-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-
On the other hand, Geet tightly held on to chain she was wearing that he had presented her on her birthday. Never ever in her wildest dream she had ever thought about leaving Delhi. Leaving him was another of her worst nightmare after her parent's death and alas that was coming true too. Soon the airhostess instructed them to fasten their seatbelts and robotically she complied. As the filght took off, she felt herself being torn' torn into pieces' "Why? Oh why has this happened to her?" Crazy she had been to think that everything in their lives would always be perfect like it had been' foolish to have dreamt of forever' "Was this the end?" she mumbled to herself as she felt the unbearable pain engulfing in her being. She was startled when she felt a comforting touch on her hand that was resting on the arm-rest. It was the same elderly lady who had nudged her to move ahead while boarding the flight. "Beta' don't loose heart... your eyes narrate a story of pain' you can share it with me if you want" the elderly lady soothingly said. "Nothing Aunty ji' (choking a bit) just another story that ended abruptly" Geet replied. The lady smiled back, "Who are you to decide whether this story has ended or is just entering another phase? You never know what fate has in store for you. Keep faith." Geet smiled back courteously but didn't really trust the wise words' Fate? It had made a mockery of her' how was she suppose to trust it again. Geet swallowed hard and trying to hold back her tears leaned on her seat waiting for the flight to reach its destination. To reach her destination now, Mumbai.

Flashback
"Babaji main jaanti hu ki main aapki sabse pyari bachchi hu' tabhi toh jab bhi koi musibat aani hoti hai aap usse mera address dekar bhej dete ho' lekin please' have mercy on me' aaj aisa kuch mat karna' waise hi meri samajh main nahi aa raha ki main kya karu' kuch bolu ya chup rahu' aur aisa toh nahi hai na ki main by car pehli baar travel kar rahi hu toh phir inke kareeb bethne se mujhe itna ajeeb kyun lag raha hai? Hayee Babaji meri madat karo"
Geet kept looking up praying to her Baba ji. Stealing a few glances at her, Maan smirked. She was making a pretty funny sight. Holding an open book in her hand, she was looking up and blabbering. "Is it a special talent Geet?" he asked in a voice that barely hid his amusement. "Huh? Kaunsa talent?" Geet asked confused. "Actually I haven't come across anyone so amazing who can read without looking at the book once or have you learnt it by-heart".
Flustered, Geet shut the book at once and muttered something unintelligible coarsely under her breath. Maan laughed heartily, "Waise Geet, how was your date the other day?" he asked trying to tease her. Embarrassed, Geet countered, "uff' It wasn't a date please' it was just a treat!" Questioning, "Treat?" he asked. Smiling sheepishly, "Haan, last Sunday I had lost to Rohan isiliye" Geet replied. Puzzled, "Lost?" Geet frowned, "Yes. By just 4 runs. Can you beat that? I lost the game to Rohan" she snorted. "Oh so you play cricket with your so called date?" he asked trying hard to muffle a laugh. She frowned at him, "Yes every Sunday." She said grinning "Great" he said, not knowing what else to say. "And thanks to you I won't be able to get even with him today" she added sulking. "Does this mean that you sorry to be here with me right now?" he asked seriously as he gave her one of his meaningful looks. Geet looked at him, stunned. All of a sudden the cheerful and teasing tone had left his voice. He sounded serious and Geet could sense that he sincerely wanted an answer to that and a lot more. When she kept looking at him and didn't reply for a couple of moments, he pulled the car to a halt and turned to her. She looked at him questioningly. "Sawal ka jawab sawal nahi hota Geet" he said huskily as he leaned towards her.
"Sir'" she began but he cut her off' "Geet maine tumse us din poocha tha ki kya tumhe kuch samajh nahi aata' lekin tumne kuch nahi kaha' aur aaj bhi jab main tumse ek aur sawaal kar raha hu' tab bhi tum chup ho" cornered, Geet didn't know what was she supposed to reply to that. "Bolo Geet' Are you sorry to be here with me?" he urged her to answer. "Maine aisa toh nahi kaha" Geet uttered out in a slow voice, captivated by his eyes. An immediate smile lit his face and Geet could feel her cheeks getting warm as she looked down. Maan cupped her jaw in his palm and delicately brushed his thumb on her reddened cheek. He then pulled back and turned the engine on while Geet blushed profusely. After several moments of uneasy silence, he asked her about the book she was reading, showing him the book she smiled, "Breaking Dawn" Maan frowned, "You too?" Geet squinted her eyes, "you 'too' matlab?" Maan smirked, "My sister is obsessed with it too. I don't know whats wrong with you girls going mad over a vampire love-story!" he replied indignantly. Geet frowned, "Hadd ho gayi' Love story toh love story hai na' (then thinking something) Sir, do you believe in love stories?" she asked hesitantly. Maan looked at her at once before replying, "Phele nahi karta tha Geet' magar ab'" Trying to gauge his expressions, Geet looked at him carefully, "Ab?" Maan smiled as he focused back on the road, "Waqt ke saath kuch baatein badal jati hai' aur tum? Do you believe in them?" Geet grinned, "All of them. Heer-Ranjha, Sohni-Mahiwal, Mirza-Galib, Romeo-Juliet, all of them' Heer-Ranjha is my all time favourite" she quipped and Maan smiled at her innocence. And they chatted some more' Geet told him about her parents, her childhood, what she had heard of Hoshiarpur and Maan inturned told her about his family, his education, Harvard, his friends, etc and before they realized, they had reached the site.
As soon as they reached, the site Manager and project Manager came forward to greet them. After having a few refreshments at the site office as Maan scanned through the landscape and explained a little gist of it to Geet, they headed off for a detail inspection of the site. While the site manager was busy discussing the landscape with Maan, Geet causally tagged along not really understanding the architectural terms they were using. Quickly distracted, Geet trailed a little behind to see the other areas of the site which were visually more appealing to her. She had seen the blue print of the mall they would prepare here so she let her mind construct their own visuals and was about to stumble over a stone but managed to regain her balance and steadied herself only to realize Maan was no where in sight. She looked around. The huge construction equipments, yet unbuilt structures and dumped heap of sand and pebbles blocked her view and she started looking for him. Just as she reached the huge crane, she heard a pleading, "saab jaane do. Hum kaam karte hai yahan" she frowned and then heard another voice, "isi liye toh. Hum dono yahin kaam karte hai. Thodi masti bhi kar lenge" Tiltingly her neck in the direction, Geet tiptoed to the back of the crane and was shocked to see the project manager they had earlier met holding the hand of a young construction worker girl. Geet frowned and looking around picked up a bamboo stick and hit the manager hard on his hand. "Aaahh" he yelped and at once left the young girl's hand.
After walking a few paces ahead, Maan realized Geet was no more walking behind him. He wondered where she could have gone now and started looking for her. As he retraced few steps, he heard the loud yelp of a man and turning in that direction he saw her holding the bamboo in one hand and one of her sandal in her other hand that was raised high and was ready to strike the guy whose hand was already bleeding. "Geet... Kya ho raha hai yahan?" he called alarmed. The site manager shrunk behind him. "Sir this girl is mad" the project manager replied. In response, Geet threw her sandal at him. Maan stared at Geet in disbelief. "Behave yourself Geet" he ordered while Geet fumed. "I think you should ask your manager to behave decently first" Geet bellowed trying to catch her breath as she once again tried to strike the manager with the bamboo, however Maan held the stick in mid-stride and forcibly pulled it from her hand giving her a sharp look. Firmly holding her hand, he asked strictly, "Ab batao, kya hua?"
Glowering at the Project Manager, Geet pointed at the worker girl and narrated the whole incident. The worker girl nodded in agreement with Geet and told Maan how this man had been harrassing her and the other girls around. Disgusted and infuriated, Maan immediately order the site Manager to look for a replacement. The project manager denied the allegations and blamed Geet for making up the stories. Geet scorned and took a step towards the Project Manager; however Maan held her back. He ordered the project manager to leave the premises at once and gave Geet a warning look indicating it was enough. But Geet innocently pointed at her sandal that she had flung at the project manager. As she wore her sandal, Maan once again asked the Manager to leave. Muttering profanities, he made his way towards the exit. Squinting her eyes, Geet slightly extended her foot and the Manager tripped over it and fell into a small drainage channel nearby. Leaning over the channel, Geet shrugged her shoulders and dusted her palms against each other as she muttered, "Where he belongs" and without giving back a second glance walked past everyone. Maan looked at her wide-eyed and shook his head while others broke into a peel of laughter.
A while later, sitting in his cabin at the site office, as Maan discussed few other details with the site manager and the architect, he made sure Geet was not wandering alone anywhere this time. So when she tried to leave, Maan held her hand beneath the table and pulled her back gesturing her to be seated. All through the discussion he didn't let her hand go. She was already angry at him for stopping her from striking that useless manager of his and now she also felt paranoid but tried to keep a straight face in front of others. If anyone would have paid some attention it wasn't really hard to notice how close had he pulled her chair to his. But since he was the Maan Singh Khurana, no one could even dare to think anything in that direction. However, Geet was aware of all his ministrations. And as the others left the room, Geet let out a sigh of relief and quickly gulped down some water to ease her racing heart. "Kya hua Geet" Maan asked innocently as he left her hand. Geet looked at him resentfully when he picked up the glass from which she had just drank water and taking it to his lips, turned the glass to where the light lipstick mark could be seen to his side and drank rest of the water. Geet gasped and leaped to her feet. He was about to say something but then thankfully the architecture reappeared and started discussing the blue prints with Maan while she sat on the couch away from him and with the help of a magazine hid her face from him.

As Rano answered the doorbell, she was taken aback to find Brij standing by the door with his hands folded, "Sasriya kal Chachi ji" he said without a tad of respect in his greetings. "Sasriyal Kal" Rano replied and stepped aside allowing Brij to enter and quickly went to call Mohinder. Moments later, Mohinder stormed into the living room and asked Brij, "Brij? Yahan kaise aana hua? Woh bhi bina bataye" Taking the glass of water that Rano offered, Brij touched Mohinder's feet and greeted him as well. "Yeh natak karne ki zaroorat nahi hai' kyun aaye ho?" Mohinder asked. Brij put on a hurt expression for a moment but the faade was worn off the very next second as his face adorned a menacing smile, "Chacha ji' main toh bas Delhi aaya hua tha' socha aap sab se milta chalu' (looking around) Geet kahin dikhayi nahi de rahi?" Mohinder tried to control his anger, "Brij, kya chahte ho?" Brij smiled and comfortably sat down on the couch, "aap ache se jaante ho' waise main soch raha tha ki agle mahine aapne Hoshiarpur toh aana hi hai toh Geet ko bhi lete aaiyega' saara kaam wohi khatam ho jayega" Rano looked disgusted while Mohinder said with finalty, "Main pehle bhi keh chuka hu Brij, main apni bachchi ka haq kisi aur ko aise hi nahi dunga" Brij smirked as he looked threateningly at Rano, "Chachi ji' atleast aap toh kuch samajhaiye chacha ji ko' everything comes for a price' samajh lijiye yeh us sach ki keemat hai jo aapne apni pyari beti Geet se chupaya hai" Rano looked aghast while Mohinder threateningly raised a finger at Brij, "Brij, I warn you' If you ever come close to my daughter, I'll kill you with my bare hands and won't think twice about you being someone close to the family. Ab nikalo yahan se' Get Out before I call the police" Offended Brij strode off while Mohinder placed a comforting hand on Rano's shoulders. "shukar hai Babaji ja ki Geet ghar pe nahi hai" she muttered in a shaky voice' Mohinder nodded thoughtfully.

It was late evening by the time Maan finished his site work and they were now driving back home. None of his site visits has ever been so interesting. Today he had witnessed yet another face of Geet's flamboyant personality. Her Jhansi ki Rani avatar, he smiled as he thought. "Has kyun rahe hai?" asked a perplexed Geet taking Maan by surprise. He hadn't noticed her watching him. "Kuch nahi" he replied. Geet was a little annoyed with Maan for what he had been doing in the office. First he had been holding her hand under the table in front of those guys and then not missed a single opportunity in teasing her about the brawl with the project manager. Undoubtedly, he was really pleased at her sense of justice and amused at her capability to pull of a scuffle but how could he miss a chance at pulling her leg so he had had a nice time addressin her as Jhansi ki Rani' drama queen' mahila mukti'
"Tareef karni toh aati nahi bas galatiyan nikalte rehte hai" sitting beside him in the passenger seat, she muttered to herself. Maan smiled at her monologue. He knew she was annoyed at him for firstly scolding her when she was all set to pounce on the manager and then for holding her back by pulling her hand. And to make the matters worse he had resorted to teasing her mercilessly without once acknowledging her heroic act. Maan pulled the car to a halt near a roadside dhaba. "Hum yahan kyun ruke hain?" she enquired. Loosening his seat-belt, "Poochne ja raha hu ki if they have some ice' apne sir pe rakh lo gussa thanda ho jayega tumhara" Geet glowered, "Kya? Main gussa karti hu? Aur aap kya karte hai? Taane dene ke alawa kuch aata hai aapko?" she retorted. "Taane dena, ulti seedhi harkatein karna aur logon ko sandal phenk ke maarne se toh behtar hi hai" he countered. Closing her eyes momentarily, she took a deep breath as she said, "Sir, subah se dekh rahi hu aap panga le rahe hai" Maan looked at her incredulously and said, "Oh really? Toh kya karogi tum?" he waited for her to answer and then reiterated, "Bolo? Kya karogi?" Geet narrowed her eyes too. "Sir mujhe challenge mat kijiye" she said warningly. Raising his eyebrows, "Geet, challenges mujhe bhi bohut pasand hai. Tum soch ke rakho main aata hu" saying he stepped out and second later thinking something, Geet stepped out too.
A few minutes later, holding a bottle of mineral water, Maan came back towards the car to find Geet sitting on the car bonnet. The smug expression on her face, was enough for Maan to know that she was upto something. He stood in place, bracing himself for what was to come next and then carefully moved forward. As soon as Geet saw him she gave him a wide grin and he looked at her trying to read her expressions, "What are you doing sitting on the bonnet?" he asked. "Wrong question sir. You should be asking what was I doing before sitting on the bonnet?" she corrected. Maan looked around to ensure there were no casualties around and then asked warily, "What were you doing?" Holding his hand, she took him towards the driver's side and then holding up a pin in one hand replied with a grin, "Flattening your car's tyre" and pointed at the punctured tyre. Flabbergasted, for a few seconds Maan didn't know how to react and he looked alternatively between her and the flat tyre. He should have known better before challenging her and leaving her alone with his priced black porche! And then he settled his glare at her. As he kept staring at her, he took a step closer to her sliding his arm around her waist; he prevented her from moving back either. As he pulled her closer, Geet instantly felt herself being intimidated. "Hmm.. wohh' main toh' main tohh' mazaak' mazak kar rahi thi" she fumbled. "Achcha? And you think this is funny?" he said through clenched teeth.
Geet wondered whether she had gone too far and jumped in to her defense, "You challenged me! I told you not too" Maan rolled his eyes exaspearted, "Geet you are impossible' Now how are we suppose to reach Delhi?" As much as he wanted to strangle her right now, he couldn't bring himself to even shout at her. "Replace the tyre with the spare one" Maan tightened his jaws' this was now when they haven't even confessed, God knows what she's gonna make of him when they were together he wondered. "Hello... I'm your boss and you don't order me around." Geet sulked and Maan went to remove the jack and the tyre from the back of the car. As the dhabewala heard the commotion, he came outside and as a kind gesture asked one of his boys to do the needful.
Meanwhile, Maan strolled a little away and stood by a small pond that was just behind the dhaba. Looking at him from a distance, Geet now realized her stupidity and went and stood by him, "Naraz hain?" she asked in a low voice. But he didn't reply. "I'm sorry" she said with a cute face while Maan resisted to look at her. He knew one look at her and he would give away. However, Geet was persistent and she went around and stood in front of him and holding both her ears apologized once again, "kaha na, I'm sorry" When he still didn't relent and turn his face away, she tried to move a little to make him face her again, but the thanks to the soft mud she lost her ground and was about to fall into the pond when he grabbed her and pulled her to safety. As she looked up, she saw him looking at her with the same intensity and possessiveness that she had seen in his eyes in the mall. She tried taking a step back but instead he pulled her close and tightened her hold. Geet looked around, afraid that someone would see them and sensing her apprehension he replied, "koi nahi hai yahan Geet" His husky voice and his touch instantly gave her goosebumps. "Sir'" she began but he placed a finger on her lips causing her to inhale sharply. "tum bolti bohut zyada ho Geet, lekin jo bolna chahiye woh nahi bolti' (he sensuously traced her lower lip as he continued) jo main sun na chahta hu woh nahi bolti" saying this he met her gaze and looked deep inside her eyes'
With her being so close to him, Maan was finding it increasingly difficult to stay afar. He felt himself drawn to her. Moving very slowly, he went behind her back and Geet tried to move ahead but he swiftly snaked his arm around her waist and pulled her back. "Geet, chaho tab bhi tum mujhse dur nahi ja paogi" he whispered in her ears. Geet who had never been in a relationship before, was finding it extremely difficult to handle his intensity and squirmed as his fingers brushed her skin while he slowly tugged her hair behind her ears. "Geet, tumhe nahi lagta yeh bachpana... yeh ladai ab bohut ho gayi' (brushing his fingers lightly along the length of her arm) tumhe nahi lagta ki zindagi ke yeh pal ab pehle se kai zyada khoobsurat ho gaye hai (encircling her waist with both his arms)bolo Geet, (urging) tumhe nahi lagta ki kaash waqt aise hi haste khelte beet jaye' (Her duppata that had slightly fallen of her shoulder, he adjusted it well and continued) Geet tum saath hoti ho toh ek ajeeb si khushi aur sukoon mehsoos hoti hai' lekin agar ek din bhi tumhe na dekhu toh bechain ho jata hu' tumhari baatein, tumhari ulti-seedhein harkatein, sab kuch apna sa lagta hai Geet' (Slowly loosening his hold, turns her around) Geet yehi ehsaas maine tumhari aankhon main bhi dekhe hain' kya tum' (stops mid-sentence as he notices the tears streaks down her face and immediately leaving her worriedly asks) kya hua Geet? I didn't mean to hurt you' agar meri koi baat tumhe buri lagi hai toh I'm sorry' saying he reluctantly took a step back and turned to go but Geet held his hand and stopped him' Pain was clearly etched over his face as he looked back questioningly.
"Aapko sorry kehne ki zaroorat nahi hai' Aapne kuch galat nahi kaha' lekin'" she choked as her fears started mounting. "Lekin? Lekin kya Geet? Kya tumhari zindagi main koi" he retraced unable to finish but Geet was quick to answer, "Nahi aisa nahi hai" He looked at her and held her shoulders once again, "Toh phir kya Geet?" he asked authoritatively. Looking straight in his eyes she decided now was the time to voice her fears before she relented to give words to her feelings, "Mujhe darr lagta hai" she whispered as she muffled a sob while Maan looked on.
