'Aakrosh' has its heart in the right place (IANS Movie Review, Rating: ***1/2)

October 15, 2010 5:46:38 AM CDT by IANS

Satyen K. BordoloiFilm: Aakrosh; Starring: Ajay Devgn, Akshaye Khanna, Paresh Rawal, Bipasha Basu; Directed by: Priyadarshan; Rating: ***1/2

Caste based atrocity is one of the worst, chronic and a few millennia old injustice of the world. Yet its continuing prevalence, especially in India, is one of its best kept open-secrets. India's vibrant cinema has paid scant attention to it. The commercial venture "Aakrosh" comes as a late but welcome populist attempt to correct this gross neglect.

After three Delhi medical students disappear from a village in Bihar, two CBI officials Sidhant (Akshaye Khanna) and Pratap (Ajay Devgn) are sent for investigation. They encounter not just an inefficient police, but an openly antagonistic one. Their attempts to uncover the truth lays bare a Pandora's box of corruption, illicit power-play, ruthless casteism and murders and abductions to maintain the status quo.

When all official means fail to bring the guilty to book, the two committed men are left with no course but to resort to every alternate means possible to deliver justice in a failed state.

"Aakrosh" is loud and sometimes crass in typical Bollywood fashion and, as they say, its fiction. What it is not - is a lie. In its own way, it lays bare the power structures that obstruct justice and thus the true groW*H of India, all because of the corrupt collusion of the police, bureaucracy and politics that uphold age old casteism. The film thus uses a lie to tell the ugly truth of our society.

"Aakrosh" is also rife with analogies. The Batman and Robin team of Sidhant and Pratap is a team of an upper-class Brahmin and a lower-caste Dalit fighting for the same cause but in their own ways. When the straightforward methods of the no-nonsense Brahmin fails, they have to resort to the street-smart ways of the Dalit to bring the guilty to book. This is perhaps a message to the subjugated masses of the country that justice has to be delivered at any cost, and it is the oppressed that have to use any means available to do so.

There are factual inconsistencies, like the brazen manner in which the local police insubordinates a CBI inquiry.

Akshaye Khanna is unconvincing while Ajay Devgn is believable as the quiet but angry ex-army major who has suffered the consequences of being a Dalit. Paresh Rawal, the master-key like actor who slides into any role, plays a slimy but smiling police officer with aplomb and epitomizes the rarely acknowledged truth, that in rural areas the police is not part of the solution, but is often the main problem.

Robin Bhatt and Akash Khurana's writing is crisp and direct. They spare the audience needless preaching, thus giving the message that it is time for some action and justice instead.

Sometimes you have to like a film just because its heart is in the right place, and because it dares to say something few have said before. "Aakrosh" is one such convincing film whose demerits are swept under the carpet of its boldness.

Of course, even a commercial venture like this cannot correct a few thousand years of injustice. But at least it can hold a mirror to the disgust in our society. Thankfully, if not gracefully enough, Aakrosh holds a correct and sturdy mirror.

I saw Masand, Anupama Chopra and Anna Vetticad review it on TV and they said that it is a shameless rip-off of 'Mississippi Burning'. Sad week for Bollywood.

Simply Brilliant!!, 15 October 2010

Author: Naman Kapur from India

First of all, a warm welcome to Priyadarshan and Akshaye Khanna. Priyadarshan had stopped making good films years ago, he was busy making guaranteed super flops with Mr. Kumar. Akshaye Khanna had disappeared from films long time ago. Both have made a good comeback with Aakrosh. And, after a long, long time, bollywood has come up with a brilliant and meaningful movie. Aakrosh deals with the honor killing that has been prominent in a few villages for the past few years. The movie also discloses the actual truth behind these alleged honor killings and the real culprits behind them.

Three students from New Delhi are found missing from the village called Jhaanjhar for the last two months. Two CBI officers ( Ajay Devgn and Akshaye Khanna ) team up to find out the truth behind their disappearance. The Jhaanjhar village, crowded with numerous corrupt politicians is terrified with the attacks going on and the police force under the Superintendent officer( Paresh Rawal) does nothing. The CBI officers have had time doing the investigation as no one in the whole village is gutsy enough to speak against the attacks and the one who tries to open his mouth is abducted by those groups. Ajay Devgn, the hot blooded, loses his cool and takes some strong actions and Akshaye Khanna, the man with the brain, takes his chances and gambles. Hard work pays off well in the end and the truth finally comes out and the village then rests in peace.

The movie has taken its inspirations from the recent cases of honor killing but on the whole it's a work of fiction.

Acting Department is ruled by Ajay Devgn and Paresh Rawal. Both are in top form in this movie. Both are trying to outdo each other with their strong expressions and dialogue delivery. Akshaye Khanna, too has acted well but Ajay Devgn and Paresh Rawal are the show stealers. Reema Sen does well. Bipasha Basu is wasted. Action Sequences are top notch. The chasing scene between Ajay Devgn and a group leader is outstanding. Dialogues are awesome. A few of them even manage to bring a smile on your face and compel you to clap and praise! Cinematography is average. Editing could be better. Priyadarshan has directed the movie splendidly this time. He is sure to win many accolades this time. The only absurd part of the movie is the romantic song between Ajay Devgn and Bipasah Basu.

To conclude, I would say go for it as finally a good Hindi movie has arrived (which actually is rare ) and for super strong performances of Ajay Devgn and Paresh Rawal.

My Rating: 8/10 Thanks and Regards.

it means fury or resentment

'Aaksrosh' Review

Director- Priyadarshan

Star Cast- Ajay Devgan, Bipasha Basu, Akshaye Khanna, Paresh Rawal

'Aakrosh' meaning fury or resentment is a good cinema to watch but it is full of duplicate work, mostly inspired by the English movie 'Mississippi Burning', although the Indian approach is quite striking and builds a special place in your heart.
Ajay Devgan plays the role of 'Pratap', he is a CBI agent while Paresh Rawal plays the role of a corrupt cop and discusses sex with a virgin at work whereas Akshay Khanna plays the role of another CBI officer Siddhant.

An intense Priyadarshan film with lot of harsh words, acidic story and typical portray of Indian caste system, it shows the attitude of the people living in the villages who flatly refuses to change their thinking about caste and marriages.

Brutal killings and the strong nature of them will make you think that India is still in its bottom most pits and has not able to come out of it. Beginning with the story, 'Aakrosh' revolves around the story of a lower cast guy, who goes with his other two friends to home town, 'Jhanjar'.

Here begins the comparisons that the film is purely copied from 'Mississippi Burning' where two FBI agents go to South America to investigate the disappearance of three civil rights activists.

While, in Priyadarshan's new offering the two police officers go to a village in a typical Indian set up. Well, the story proceeds ahead with the missing of the two students out of three who went to their village.

Government sends Pratap and Siddhant to investigate the matter, but what's this, we find our very own Paresh Rawal here, who is the typical, dirty police officer and makes the task of the two CBI appointed officers difficult.

Bipasha Basu, though in totally a deglam avatar has a great role in the film. She plays the role of 'Geeta', and loves Pratap (Ajay Devgan), dreams of being with him, but due to lower cast of Ajay Devgan, she is forced to marry Paresh Rawal.

Paresh Rawal abuses her physically and mentally, he beats her badly and so she gradually becomes like a dead body.

Pratap and Siddhant try their best to find out the bad guys who abducted the students. The chase sequence scenes are really striking and it is again Ajay Devgan who makes a punch in the movie.

There lies a tug of war between the opponents and the CBI officers. At last Priyadarshan leaves some hope from the movie, but needless to say that the movie is a replica of 'Mississippi Burning', but it plants the seed of a final full stop to honor killings and cast system in India. Music is great by Pritam and Samira Reddy steals the spotlight by her 'Isak se Meetha' item number

I saw it and absolutely loved it - drama, thriller, substantial performances all in one. Ajay and Akshaye did a brilliant job and sometimes I fail to understand why don't these two especially Akshaye get such meaty roles nowadays.. Bipasha's role was quite small yet impacful, Paresh Rawal did a fabulous job, playing the role of a corrupt officer, he made chulbul look like a zero in front of him. Music was nice too, I'm in love with 'saude bazi'.. Overall brilliant job by everyone. 👏
