Who is most loved character in gen 4?
Maan came to stand near her chair and she slowly got up and went up to the swing, standing holding the pillar looking out at the horizon. Maan walked behind her understanding that if he spoke something now, she will clam up… so he waited patiently; though he knew there was none in him where Geet was concerned.
Just loved these lines..I am waiting..The truth ' Two sides of a Coin part 4
Maan had been patient by keeping quiet but inside he knew he was breaking apart. He not even in his wildest nightmares would have imagined Geet to be married. She had been married, even if it was not real, it must have been before she knew it. He wanted to kill that guy who had abused her trust. He felt a rage building inside him, deep inside him that was overpowering him, but he was trying to calm himself down to at least hear her. He wanted to shake her, to know everything at once, to ask her to spew that low life scumbag's name and to pulverize him into small pieces and even then he did not think he would be satisfied. He kept clenching and unclenching his fists, the only sign on otherwise outwardly calm exterior of the inner turmoil he was going through. He did not know if he wanted to hear anything other than that where to find that loser was but counted the number of times his jaw grinded to keep himself from speaking.
She said continuing after a pause as if trying to gather her thoughts, " I was in school just finished my 12th grade and wanted to pursue BSc but Daarji and Brij Virji felt that girls should be married off as soon as possible so that there was no repetition of what happened with Channi and girls were a responsibility best finished off with quickly."
She paused reminiscing her carefree days that been curbed once Taiji had brought the rishta of the Canadian boy. She continued and told him how she had been informed there was a Canadian NRI looking for a homely girl and Daarji had invited them to see Geet. She related the whole story of how the family came and they met and initially it seemed that the alliance would not go through but then suddenly it seemed her fate was sealed and they were to marry in three days. It was a hushed affair and they had gotten married in temple in Mukeria and described the day and place.
Maan recalled him going to the very temple and had seen someone getting married though he had not seen the bride and the groom as he had waited for the panditji performing the rites to finish as he was looking for'Vicky.
"So it was you who had gotten married in that temple and I was there'. I was there Geet" he whispered almost inaudibly and Geet did not hear him, as she was engrossed in her past, reliving the moment that had been the sweetest and today it only left only bitterness in her soul. If she ever got her hands on him'.again..she crushed the thought, it was not going to help going that route right now, she needed to finish this, it was catharsis that was much needed and she was glad it was Maan she was telling because it had been festering inside her, this guilt of leading him on, of loving him when she felt she had no right.
Now he will know her truth and he will go away, leave her alone. She was certain he would want nothing to do with her once he learned what has happened to her. He will not want her to be near her, let alone have her working for him, as a secretary and being his fake fiancee. He will run a mile before he will associate himself with her. She knew all that had happened was not her fault but why would a man, like Maan; want a woman with a past, past like hers. She had too much baggage.
She had paused for a long time, silence stretching between them, both lost in their train of thoughts. Maan then cleared his throat to bring her back and almost put a hand on her shoulder but pulled it back because he did not want distraction, he did not want to be swayed at this moment. He needed all his faculties with him and he knew what happened when he touched her, his brained short circuited, every time.
She turned then, to look at him, seeing the questions he was asking with his eyes silently. She felt he seemed to be holding onto his control thinly, very thinly. He was almost at breaking point. Would he be able to take it? Again the doubts crept in, again she felt she should not tell him but he looked like he would do something drastic if she evaded one more time, so she continued.
"The day before we got married his Bhabhi asked me to sign blank papers on the pretext to get a visa through the influence she had in the embassy. That is what the land papers were about Maan, that signature had been used to sell the land that Daarji had given as a wedding gift to him." She spited out in disgust.
"The whole family his mother, his sister and his Bhabhi had schemed only to get money. The marriage was illegal, for his Bhabhi was actually his wife." This she said with anger, anger at being so nave to believe that that day in Amritsar she had gone to meet him and found out that his Bhabhi was his wife. The final blinkers had fallen off that day.
Maan then banged his fist against the pillar of the swing, his anger finally finding an escape, a resonance of what she felt. Now he understood her protest, her disbelief even her family has said as much, that they had not sold any land but he the pompous stubborn know-all that he was, had battered them into giving that land to him by hurling them accusations of being cheats when it was them and Geet who was cheated. He was almost at the end of his tether but only banged his fist to show his frustration when he actually wanted to wring someone's neck, preferably that douche.
Geet flinched at this raw emotion he displayed, at the how much he must care for her to feel her pain as she did. She was scared, scared that she was going to hurt him, damage him even. He will lose faith in women, she thought, I have lied by omission. I have not been truthful and he had told her number of times that he hated lies.
She shivered at the thought of losing him. He was the only ray of hope in otherwise bleak life of hers. She was at the edge of a precipice that had the deep sea on one side and a gorge on the other. If she told him, she will lose him and if did not, she would be living a lie and what would happen the day the truth would hit them in the face. What would she say then?
Just as she was dithering between going ahead and pulling back, they heard footstep coming towards them in a trot and Rajjo barged out on the patio with,
"Geet, Chachaji just tried to commit suicide, you had better come home!" Raji spoke in between sobs almost incoherent and it was Maan, who was first to react, scrambled towards her, held her shoulders and growled, "Where is he?"
