theoretically, what all mahiiiji said is absolutely right.in simple language to say, when we hear sanjeev kumar singing meri bheegi bheegi si palkho me rehgayi, song from the movie anamika,or when rajesh khanna singing roop tera mastana,or when amitabh singing dilbhar mere,or for that matter kaante nahi kathe din ye raat by anil kapoor,we feel they them selves are singing,it is them nd no one .but the playback given by kishore da
we should feel the actor himself is singing.
when sreeram sang kawa kawa, I felt some punjabi singer is singing,as I heard it from the other room, nd when I saw the video,I couldnt believe how he modified his voice as per the song .this is called versatile singing.this is what they are indeed looking this year in indian idol 5.versatality,playback voice.

I think in Bollywood that playback quality is a very important thing. I don't think that a playback voice simply only means being able to sing for various actors, its more than that. Its about having a strong voice, one that stands out and will be able to emote without any other factors besides singing.

Sreeram has a playback voice because his voice is strong. I hear it and think wow. It strikes a chord somewhere. I can close my eyes and picture any of his songs on the original video and it fits. His voice is smooth, it holds some weight, and its not stuck in one genre. Sreeram also has a lot of clarity in his voice ... that same clarity that Udit Narayan holds.

Sometimes people have strong technical skills, but lack in voice quality, and that's not good enough. I think Sreeram and Rakesh both have strong playback voices, but Rakesh is stuck in on genre and lacks versatility in singing and in expression. Shivam has potential, but he's not ready for playback yet. His voice is immature due to his young age. He'll need some time to get a strong voice like Sreeram and Rakesh's. I really feel Shivam's voice quivering sometimes during his performances.
