I know this update is a little late, compared to other updates, but it wanted to be a little bit maha, and so will the next update. Hopefully that makes up for any delay. 😊

Nothing Can Keep Us Apart

Part 10 - A difficult separation.

Ever since Dev and Naintara had run into Geet at the office, Naintara had been on her guard. She had never let Dev be alone with Dadi on the chance that he might break under her questioning and tell the truth. She also spent ever spare minute she had trying to find out what Maan was doing. For that reason, she had been eavesdropping on Savitri's side of the phone conversation. Hearing that Maan intended to have them arrested, she sprung into action. Racing up to their room she told Dev what she had overheard and that he should pack his bags quickly.

When he asked why she replied, "Pagal hogi ho? Do you want to go to prison? I certainly don't! Do what I say or I will never forgive you!"

Dev began packing while Naintara did the same. When they finished Dev asked, "Where will we go?"

"We can figure that out later. Right now we just need to get as far away from here as possible."

Naintara had been quick enough to realize that no one had mentioned Geet's pregnancy. She didn't know if Geet had gotten an abortion, or not, but she wasn't going to take any chances. Men were very strange about their children and she didn't intend that Dev should ever know he fathered a child with Geet. Better to become fugitives than to lose him.

When Maan arrived with the police, they immediately began searching for Dev and Naintara, but when they couldn't find them, they began questioning Savitri and the household staff. None had seen them in the house for several hours, but one of the gardeners had seen them getting into a taxi with their luggage. After assuring Maan that they would continue looking for his brother and sister-in-law, the police left the Khurana mansion. All during this ordeal Savitri had been struggling to maintain a calm air, but after the police were gone, she broke down weeping again. Maan walked over to her and held her tight in his arms, as he cursed Dev for being born and bringing this misery to their family.

First Week Without Geet

After failing to find Geet on his own, Maan again engaged the services of his private investigators. He had them put Pinky's house under 24-hour surveillance on the hope that Geet would eventually come back. He also had them continue searching places where Geet might chose to live or work. To distract himself, he tried going to work and carrying on as normal, but it quickly became evident that it was impossible. There was no place in the building that he could go that didn't remind him of Geet. If he tried working in his office, all that happened was him looking into Geet's office, at her empty chair, and continually feeling like he wanted to smash all the glass windows like he smashed Dev's face.

First Week Without Maan

Geet was doing quite well at forgetting about Maan Singh Khurana. Instead of thinking about him all the time, she only thought about him when she did office work for Nandini Aunty, when she would feel the baby kick, and when she tried to sleep at night, but instead cried for a couple hours. It didn't help that every time she talked to Pinky, she had to hear about how DD was still looking for her, or still wanting to talk to her. The only thing that kept her from total hysteria was that Pinky had assured her that DD had stopped asking Pinky about her. Whenever Geet thought about seeing or speaking to Maan, she would get a horrible feeling in her chest. She tried to follow Aunty's advice to be calm and happy, so that her baby would feel the same, but it wasn't easy. Working at the store helped. It made her feel good to be around so many mothers and babies, and it made her feel more excited about becoming a mother herself.

Second Week Without Geet

Maan's investigators had so far had no success in finding Geet. They kept reassuring him that Delhi was a very big city, but that they would find Geet soon. The assurances he received did not make Maan feel any better. In fact, thinking about how big Delhi was, and that Geet was on her own in the city, made the hole in his chest feel even larger. Since he had given up going to the office, there was nothing he could do to pass the time except harass the police about finding Dev and Naintara. However, this also produced no results, as the police had not been able to uncover any leads as to their whereabouts. In frustration Maan had taken to walking anywhere and everywhere in the vain effort, though he didn't know it, to run into Geet. Near the end of the week he was walking in downtown Delhi thinking of what Dadi had asked him the previous night.

"Maan, I want you to move back into the house."

"Nai, Dadima."

"Maan, meri baat suno. Dev has gone from this house forever. Who knows if Vicky will ever return. I wanted all my grandchildren together, and instead I'm left with none. Please, please will you forgive me and come back?" pleaded Savitri with tears in her eyes.

"Dadima, you don't need to ask me for forgiveness."

"Then come home, Maan, come home!" Maan hadn't been able to say no to her, but he only agreed to move back if everything of Dev's was destroyed, including any of his pictures.

As he was walking and remembering, he was not being very careful of where he was going, and bumped into someone. While saying sorry, Maan's eyes were caught by the store that he was standing in front of. He went inside and wandered over to a shelf full of books. While standing there someone came over and asked him if he needed any help.

"I don't know," replied Maan. "Which one do you think is good?" The woman selected a book for him and after paying for it, he left the store and began walking again.

Second Week Without Maan

Geet was finally beginning to lose the feeling of her life being over. Her crying bouts had lessened, and she was given more responsibilities in the store. Nandini Aunty did her best to cheer Geet up. She was quite a funny lady, and would try to make Geet laugh as much as possible. When they weren't working in the store, Nandini would take Geet around Delhi, showing her the different sites around the city. Once, instead of taking Geet site seeing, she eyed her and said that Geet needed a mommy makeover. Geet protested that she didn't need any new clothes yet, and she couldn't afford them anyway. However, Nandini just swept her objections aside by saying that they would get clothes from her shop, and it would be considered part of her salary. They spent almost all day trying out different clothes and having some well deserved girl time.

A few days later Geet came out of the back office to see Nandini looking thoughtfully out one of the store windows.

"Kya hua, Aunty?" asked Geet, coming up next to Nandini's side.

"A young man was just in here who seemed very troubled. He bought What to Expect When You're Expecting. I don't know what is wrong, but I feel very sorry for him."

Geet looked out the window in the direction that Nandini was looking, but didn't see anyone. Yet, she too felt sorry for this troubled stranger.

Third Week Without Geet

Khurana's had almost gotten used to MK coming to work every day, so it was a bit of a shock when he stopped coming in. There was some wild speculation about the sudden change, but eventually the conclusion reached was that MK had just gone back to normal. No one at the office knew how wrong they were. As another week went by without Geet being located, Maan became almost crazy alternating between worry and anger. Whenever he read the book about pregnancy he had bought, he would feel an overwhelming fear that Geet wasn't taking proper care of herself. He would remember her stay in the hospital and how concerned the doctor had been for her health.

When Maan couldn't bear to read anymore, he would start his aimless wandering of Delhi. As he would walk randomly around the city, his anger at Geet would come forward. He was doing his best to find her, to make sure she was alright, and assure her that Dev would be punished, but did she care? Did the time they had spent together mean anything to her? Did the times he had helped and rescued her have any affect? No! He had felt more misery in the last 3 weeks than he had in a lifetime, and she couldn't call him up once. Not even to tell him off!

This pattern repeated itself many times, until Maan lost all track of time and stayed out for more than 24 hours. When he finally came home, Savitri was so worried, that she forced him to promise that he would stay home from now on. She reasoned with him that once Geet was found, he would be no good to her if he killed himself from neglect. Maan gave in to Savitri's request, but the tension inside wouldn't leave him. He spent many hours exercising, trying to release all the pain he felt from Geet's loss.

After a particularly grueling session Sunday evening, Maan sat against one wall, starring at Geet's taveez. He had been carrying it with him constantly, because he felt that it brought him closer to Geet. This was how Savitri found him, when she came to speak with him. In her own grief, Savitri had negelected Maan quite a bit the last few weeks, but she had decided that it was time to reclaim her family, starting with him.

"What it that you have there, Maan?" questioned Savitri.

"Geet's taveez," was the reply.

"Why do you have it?"

"She forgot it the last time we met in Hoshiarpur."

"You met in Hoshiarpur?" asked a shocked Savitri. "Neither of you ever said so to me."

"Why do you think Geet believes I was involved in Dev's deception? I was there at the same time looking for Vicky, and Geet and I met quite a few times."

"Maan," said Savitri in a very serious voice, "you need to tell me everything about your time with Geet in Hoshiarpur, and I mean everything!"

Maan quietly narrated everything that had happened between him and Geet while he was in Hoshiarpur. As Savitri listened, she realized that it explain a lot, about both Geet's and Maan's behavior. "Dadima, she wouldn't see me or talk to me!" said a tormented Maan when he was finished. "I don't know where she is, or what to do."

"Well, I think the first thing you should do is start wearing that taveez around your neck. Then you should get a good night's sleep, because if you remember, you need to go to work tomorrow."

"Wear the taveez?" asked Maan with a confused look on his face. "I can't. It's not mine."

"Accha!" exclaimed Savitri, with a small, knowing smile on her face. "Then why is it, every time you gave it back to Geet, it somehow ended up in your possession again? Beta, ab taveez pehnenga, sab theek ho jayega."

Precap:

"Before you take your decision, I think you need to know the story of the Khurana family."
