In the wake of all this discussion on domestic violence, I have decided to post a few links for anyone interested in knowing more. Check out the 2nd link: It says that 2/3rds of married women in India are victoms of DV. This is huge!!!!
Please forward/send to as many people you can to raise awareness.

Well done for highlighting this problem that so many women keep hidden.
I completely disagree with domestic violence and feel very uncomfortable that so many people find it amusing when SS hits Amma. I agree that she's a pain in the backside but no woman should have to endure it, my best friend's husband hits her occassionally and I think it's terrible, if my husband ever did it I'd call the police so fast his feet wouldn't touch the ground, but luckily for me he's been bought up well by his parents to respect women and not treat them like doormats.

WOW I just saw this thread and you have some very good links attached. I work with a lot of refugees, and one of the things that comes out in my research is that no matter what country you live in, Domestic Violence is something that is under reported everywhere.
The power imbalance in a relationship has much to do with how women feel and assume they are weaker then their partners. Earning a good wage, education, self respect - all of these things play into the power imbalance and how much control the person feels they have over someone else.
Its quite crazy that in "first world countries" where literacy and education are some of the worlds best, even then this type of violence is a major issue and women needs ot know what avenues they have available to them to seek and get help.

thanks for the insightful reply Sonya. Yes DV is a worldwide problem and has little to do with literacy and education. Instead it has more to do with a woman's attitude in this case, Amma is hit by SS on an almost regular basis and yet she doesnt feel sympathetic toward Kesar who undergoes mental and physical torture everyday. I am just surprised that and shocked at the callousness of it all. This serial raises some difficult questions but not in a manner that's more realistic or problem-solving. INstead it opts for the usual parivaar samaj izzat route.
