It's one thing for her to look after her parents or dadi - if KK were to need an operation, or Padma needed more help in the house for a family occasion, that would be one thing. But it's another thing to all the time chase a married sister of hers who hates her. Yeah, Jyoti was deeply involved in Sudha's problems as well, but in this case, at least her sasural not only knew about it, but bought into it, and today, since Sudha is part of their parivar, what Jyoti did at least retroactively can be justified as being done in the interest of her sasural as well, not just her maayka.
But when we are talking about Jyoti's obsession w/ her maayka, that's really more a code word for Sushma. And here, the Vashishths were justifiably angry. After all, MN&G love Jyoti and supported her in every way, right down to trusting her w/ the keys of their safe, and in return, the only time Jyoti ever tended to them was after the heist. Otherwise, ever since Deepu discovered Sushma bar dancing, Jyoti has been after her. Given that she was the most hated by Sushma, why was it her role to be there for Sushma? And I strongly disagree w/ Abida, and Sudha was right - when it was time to file the police report, Deepu could have filed it the same way Jyoti did - and no police inspector would have called the Vashisths apologizing for not taking her report - it would have gone to the domestic violence cell, and the same cops would have turned up at their house. Jyoti needed to let Deepu & Padma handle the entire Sushma problem, instead of letting it come to this.
Re: Jyoti's working and supporting her maayka w/ the money, as I pointed out, she would have done more justice to her sasural had she taken a fixed amount of cash from Pankaj to give them monthly, and in return, give Gayatri what she wanted. Gayatri wanted Jyoti to be home not so that she's always cooking, or doing the dishes or the laundry, but so that she could talk to her and get to know her well. The reason they looked forward to the bahu was the company, not an extension to Longshree's staff. Since Pankaj wanted to be thought of an extension to the Sharma family as well, by doing this, Jyoti would also have made him feel how loved and wanted he was at his sasural, instead of being lied to through their teeth by every member of the family, including Sudha.

Still not sure if I agree with what it means to be a bahu ... in the traditional sense where she leaves her home and moves to another village to take over the running of the house, taking care of everyone, cooking, cleaning and having babies - which is what most of these serials are about, then maybe Jyoti can't do that only.
Let me tell you that if I had to stay home and do all of this, then I would have told my parents not to send me to school because an education has made these things just a chore for most women.Today, a bahu can do these things, but she can do so much more like work, run her own business, have hobbies, and still be an integral part of her husband's family.Believe me - from my own personal experience, even if you fulfill all the things a traditional bahu does, that doesn't mean your inlaws will be happy with you. I find throughout time, and even today, no matter how much the girl gives up to take care of her inlaws, they don't appreciate it because she is the daughter in law and not the son or the real daughter. She was brought to be a servant to them and not a part of the family. So, I don't think that Jyoti like most other women would fit into this servant role very well.
