Idealistically, I would like to see the two nations as friends. No I do not see us being 'one' nation. Sometime, in the very distant future, I would like to see the nation being 'friends'.
Even though I'm and idealist who prefers friendship and peace, one cannot ignore reality. Years of real history cannot be erased momentarily by one peace mission. The two nations have a long history, and changes need to be made in small sure and positive steps.
The first changes do need to come from Pakistan. Right now it is a turbulent country that harbors too many hostile forces. There is way too much conflict and instability due to extreme forces within the nation. India cannot afford to ignore that, because India as a nation has the responsibility to protect the well being of its innocent citizens.
First and foremost Pakistan has to start to stabilize itself. It has to stop being a volatile nation prone to extremist tendencies. It has to truly become a fair people's democracy. It has to show that it can overcome the extremist forces and become a balanced more moderate nation, that wants to fit in the subcontinent and the world as a successful democracy. Once Pakistan achieves this India can consider mutual cooperative agreements and treaties and in due time move to friendship.
However, first things first fix Pakistan. Now don't get me wrong. I do believe the average Pakistani has good intentions, and are good people who want an ordinary normal life like the rest of the world. I don't think they necessarily support the extreme forces and malice. But as long as the extreme forces have clout and generate control, it is too risky to count on the goodwill of a few good people. Whoever the few good people are have to take control of their nation and steer it away from the negatives.
