Is Shahid Kapur the next superstar?
I know it's a bit late to talk about it (the film released last week) but I just saw Dil Bole Hadippa and if there's one thought I left the theatre with, it is this: Shahid Kapur will go places. More precisely, places only the Big Two (Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan) have gone till now. In his generation, if there's one actor who has the potential to become a superstar, it is Shahid Kapur.
Think about it.
He's good looking. He still looks very boyish but not as much as he did in his early films. You only have to watch Kaminey to see how different and 'non-chocolate boy' he can appear.
He's charismatic. He has an arresting screen presence and can hold a frame perfectly. If there's a tight close-up of his on the big screen (and there were many in Dil Bole Hadippa), you are compelled to keep looking at him. He's easily the best dancer in Mumbai – even better than Hrithik Roshan. And best of all, he can act. Jab We Met was an out-and-out Kareena film, but Shahid stood out with a fine performance. Dil Bole Hadippa is a total Rani Mukherji vehicle – the film was made to showcase her talent and looks to audiences all over again ("see how good she is even today!"), but once again, Shahid held his own. The best example of course is Kaminey, where he played Guddu and Charlie — two such different characters — so well. What else does he need to reach that isolated, dizzy peak called superstardom? Four things, I think:
Some great roles.
Some blockbuster hits.
Some more experience..
A bit of luck.
The first is up to him. I guess he has to sign interesting films which give him a chance to show his acting talent. The second – well, no one knows what makes a film a hit, the only thing you can do is to go with your instinct (not a bad idea actually). The third will come automatically. And the last? Keep your fingers firmly crossed!
But if he's sensible (and lucky), I don't think anything can stop Shahid Kapur. As Rishi Kapoor said of Farhan Akhtar in Luck By Chance, "He's a vul-cano of talent!"
PS. Kareena Kapoor, eat your heart out.
