but there is a huge audience out there for these types of shows. and form what u have written zara, methinks u've been hooked too though u say its fake 😉 . i think they take slices of real life garnish with tons of masala present it to the viewers. hence its the underlying seed ( and its a very wee little seed, mind u) that keeps viewers hooked.

i am hooked i am not proud of it but oh i am an addict and i cant help myself. 😆 but u r probably right it probably takes a little just a smidgeon from the truth and the rest is the needed glamor and garam masala

I believe the answer lies in what television (or most mainstream media) tries to represent. They try to be acceptable to middle-class morality. They try to say what they think people want to hear. They don't attempt to work very hard at representing India. The urban divorce rate is climbing now and young people are frequently finding that their marriages just aren't working. Television represents an idealised space in which a long lecture by some fat woman in a sari will make a couple stay together when they were tearing into each other a few scenes ago. No, television does not represent India, specially not urban India. But it does represent what the makers of mainstream serials think we think of ourselves.

I agree Television definitely does not depict indian faily life reality. but I doubt whether they appeal to middle class morality.
I used to beliebe middle class morality would appreciate productions like Malgudi Days and Wagle Ki duniya.
Clearly these are no longer popular prime time choices. But that does not necessarily mean the middle class morality is ready to imbible practices of infidelity, pre marital affairs in their life.

When The indian audience was exposed to bay watch and soaps like Bold and the Beautiful, they developed a broader outlook with respect to entertainment. It was a titillating change from Doordarshan. A change widely accepted but also understood as competitve entertainment and not art to enrich our lives.
