Very true! A country where more than 2000 dialects are spoken, how can it be expected that everyone should speak and understand Hindi?
Hindi is an optional subject in most parts of Eastern, Western and Southern India...and whatever the kids learn in school is very, very basic.
If you go to Bangalore, you will find that most people converse in English rather than the state language of Kanndiga or Hindi! And unlike the other Mangalorean actress (Aishwarya), Deepika has lived in Bangalore all her life, so the chances of her speaking Hindi fluently would be less!

I am a Punjabi.. lived in Punjab almost all my life (until a few years ago) and I can't speak Punjabi well at all. šŸ˜•

The focus in our school was always English..

With that said, I haven't really paid much attention to how Deepika speaks Hindi (if you want my honest answeršŸ˜†).

I would actually say English is more widely used there than Hindi.

EXACTLYYY!!! we r first taught English, then in grade 4 onwards we start with our national language (Hindi) and then the state's language/second language (Marathi/Gujrati/Punjabi/Bengali/Southie one's..etc), unless, ofcourse, you go to Hindi medium school, which I highly doubt Prakash Padukone's daughter's would attendšŸ˜• And she went to a catholic school,I reckon, and those nun's/ sisters are usually very strict..we were supposed to converse in English all the time, or we would end up getting remarks(to be signed by our parents) in our school calendar. okay but seriously ppl hardly converse in Hindi(unless you are a northie..which clearly she isn't) Give the girl a break!!😃
