The Bhatts have often told stories that seem straight out of everyday life. Their new outing JASHNN also mirrors the thoughts of zillions of hopefuls. It's about a nobody who wants to achieve success in life, wants to live his dreams, wants to become a somebody some day. In that respect, JASHNN, with director duo Raksha Mistry and Hasnain Hyderabadwala in the driving seat, drives home the point convincingly.

You can't deny the fact that JASHNN brings back memories of the immensely likable ROCK ON!!, for JASHNN is also about a boy band, about dreams, about defeat and about success. Like ROCK ON!!, JASHNN also looks at relationships, but the relationships here are poles apart.

In this case, the protagonist [Adhyayan Suman] is living off his sister [Shahana Goswami], who is reduced to being the mistress of a wealthy entrepreneur [Humayun Saeed] and who loathes the protagonist. Actually, the relationship between the siblings and also the volatile relationship between Adhyayan and Humayun are the mainstay of the film. Sequences between them expose the stark reality of life.

Write your own movie review of Jashnn
But JASHNN is not without its share of hiccups. The romantic track could've been as intense as the volatile ones. Also, it gets long drawn towards the second hour and robs the film of its sheen to an extent. But the climax more than compensates for the blemishes. Thankfully!

All said and done, JASHNN is yet another compelling tale from the house of Bhatts. Super music coupled with bravura performances from its principal cast makes JASHNN an interesting watch.

Akash [Adhyayan Suman] thirsts to become a singing icon. But though he has dreams in his heart, he is unable to find that distinctive voice that he can call his own, that will propel him to the top. Only when he confronts a bitter truth - that he is freeloading off his elder sister Nisha [Shahana Goswami], who, in order to offer him a decent lifestyle, has become the mistress of a rich businessman Aman Bajaj [Humayun Saeed] - is he is able to touch his inner core.

Call it irony or a twist of fate, but the person who sees him through this dark night and mentors him when he's down and out is none other than the sister of the person who he hates most in the world - Aman Bajaj. It is Sara [Anjana Sukhani], Aman's sister, who makes him realize that he is an extremely talented man and is simply going through a bad phase.

In the end, he not only touches his inexhaustible potential and becomes an overnight star, but also humbles his biggest detractor Aman Bajaj and in the process, lives up to the faith that his sister and Sara had in him all along.

Director duo Raksha and Hasnain step into a different domain [emotions], after attempting thrillers. And the relationships here are too complex. Some instances...
Watch out for the tiff between Adhyayan and Humayun, when the latter abuses Shahana. The subsequent sequence, when Adhyayan apologises to Humayun at his office, is heart-breaking.
Here's another. Adhyayan and Shahana enter Anjana's party and the confrontation that ensues with Humayun there. Another master stroke!
Note another sequence. In the post-interval portions, Adhyayan's demo is rejected by the music company baron and his outburst at this point. It breaks your heart!
The same night, he takes refuge in drinks and even robs money from another guest at the hotel. What happens thereafter is astonishing.
  • In the climax, Adhyayan calls his sister on stage and makes her accept the trophy from Humayun. Clapworthy, but deeply emotional!
But, as mentioned earlier, JASHNN loses its grip during the romantic sequences. The film dips in the second hour, which is long drawn and half as convincing at times. The low phase that Adhyayan goes through could've been more effective and shorter.

Director duo Raksha and Hasnain show sparks of brilliance in the above-mentioned scenes and they get solid help from writer Shagufta Rafique, whose screenplay is watertight, barring the portions mentioned above. You expect every Bhatt movie to be embellished with melodious and soulful music and the songs in JASHNN are seeped in melody, especially the final track. Dialogues are powerful and dipped in acid at times. Camerawork is up to the mark.

All four actors shine in their respective roles. Adhyayan Suman takes giant strides. Note the helplessness, the sorrow, the dejection and the eventual exhilaration. This is Adhyayan's showreel. Humayun Saeed, from across the border, is brilliant. This film makes you wake up to this talent, which gives the film a rich texture. Here's an actor to watch. Shahana Goswami is already going from strength to strength and JASHNN only proves that she's matchless. She handles her part with amazing understanding. Anjana Sukhani is a revelation. Again, this film should act as a showreel for her. She's excellent.

On the whole, JASHNN is a moving tale with three USPs - its music, the emotional quotient and the performances by its four actors. Despite some loose ends, it should slowly and steadily win over cinegoers based on these three factors.

Movie Review: Jashnn

More Like Depression
Rating: 1 on 5

Jashnn was earlier spelled as Jashn. The makers made a numerological correction in the title. If only they had made some changes in the story and the script and the direction of the movie, we would have been spared the ordeal.

Jashnn is the story of Akash Verma (Adhyayan Suman) who wants to be a rockstar. His sister Nisha (Shahana Goswami) is financially and emotionally dependent on Aman Bajaj (Humayun Sayeed). Akash doesn't like the way he treats his sister. He in turn falls in love with Sara (Anjana Sukhani) who happens to be Aman's sister. A tiff between Akash and Nisha causes him to leave home to pursue his dreams. Nisha starts taking control of her life. Sara is by his side all this time. In spite of numerous obstacles, most of them planted by Aman Bajaj, Akash succeeds in fulfilling his dreams.

The film seems to have borrowed elements from Mahesh Bhatt's eighties tour-de-force flick Thikana in which Smita Patil is sister to Anil Kapoor and the two of them have to go through hell to find their bearings. Much in the same manner as Jashnn tries to explore the same formula.

Out of all the performances, Shahana Goswami stands out, as usual. She is such a natural, effortless and powerful actress who owns the screen with her presence. The brother-sister bonding is well portrayed. The best scenes in the movie are between them, especially the climax one. The love story between Anjana and Adhyayan is pretty thanda, including the intimate scenes. What's good is that she sticks by him. She is passable. Aaya Re and Nazrein Karam are the best songs. Humayun Sayeed is perfectly cast. You loathe him.

Jashnn has shades of Rock On!!, especially in the song Aaya Re but in spite of his curls, Adhyayan isn't the charismatic Farhan Akhtar and the song isn't Pichle Saat Dino Mein.

What works for Adhyayan in his scenes with Shahana is that he just has to react to her unmatched hysteria. He either smiles, or frowns or gets angry throughout the film. Maybe he should have waited before he took on such an emotionally demanding role.

The problem with Jashnn is that most of the characters are struggling throughout. They are shouting, fighting and crying all the time. The first half is tedious as characters are being established. You think the second half will pick up but it doesn't. It takes on an entirely different route where Adhyayan becomes a bathroom cleaner. The direction (Mahesh Bhatt or Hasnain-Raksha? It sure lacks Mahesh Bhatt's touch) is quite tacky which is why nothing moves you and the heavy-duty intense scenes fall flat. The dialogues are laughable. The bitch-prostitute bit gets too much. The movie is painfully slow. The climax isn't joyful. The paint ball sequence is straight out of 10 Things I Hate About You.

There are a lot of clichs like the heroine's wicked brother who is determined to bring the hero down, the heroine getting pregnant and ranting about her pet mein palta hua bacha.

Also, Akash and Nisha are poor but they live in a gorgeous bungalow, replete with a swimming pool. It has been provided by her boyfriend. Didn't they think they could be financially independent if they sold the house and moved into an apartment? Nisha sells all the furniture but still doesn't have money to pay the taxi fare.

Jashnn completes the hat-trick of bad movies; Kambakkht Ishq and Shortkut are the first two. Before the release of Jashnn, my friend had joked that it would be another Tashan. Atleast Tashan had eye candy in the form of Saif and Kareena. Jashnn isn't fun. Go party instead!

Jashnn revolves around the life of twenty year old Akash Verma (Adhyayan Suman) who aspires to be the latest singing sensation of India and become the heartthrob of millions of fans. But he is unable to compete with the existing singers, who have already climbed the ladder of success and are now basking in its glory. He seeks to create a niche for his own voice in the music industry and be on the road to stardom, fans and recognition. In the process of reaching his destiny, Akash finds himself shattered when he encounters a sordid truth. His elder sister Nisha (Shahana) who works to earn money and provide him with a decent lifestyle is the mistress of a very rich businessman, Aman Bajaj (Humayun). The twist in the tale however occurs when Akash finds Sara (Anjana) in his life and proves to be his mentor as well as his biggest support, when he undergoes a very painful period in his professional life. Unknown to him, Sara is none other than the sister of his biggest enemy - Aman Bajaj. However, she makes Akash realize that he is a singer with an inherent talent and he should never give up hope. With Sara's genuine love and support, Akash surmounts the toughest period of his life, discovers his voice once again and starts on the journey to success. Luck also starts showering on Akash soon after. He becomes an overnight star and manages to restore dignity to his beleaguered sister as well. Does Akash continue to be his good old self even after achieving stardom? Does he succeed in living up to the faith that Sara had shown in him all along the way? What happens to his terms with his biggest detractor - Aman Bajaj? These questions get answered in the rest part of the film.

After delivering two duds The Killer and The Train, director duo Raksha and Hasnain finally manage to get it right the third time. Their attempt at an emotion packed musical works to a large extent. Though there are moments that remind you of Rock On, Jashnn manages to come out on its own. Shagufta Rafique's screenplay is packed with some great emotional moments which succeed in bringing tears in your eyes and due credit for the same also needs to be shared with actors Adhyayan-Shahana and Anjana and the director duo. The influence of Mahesh Bhatt can be experienced in the confrontation scenes between Adhyayan and Humayun. Music by Toshi-Sharib makes a bigger impact while watching the songs on screen. On the downside, the second half appears lengthy as the pace drops down. But eventually, the climax packs a punch.

Adhyayan Suman shows tremendous growth as an actor in his first solo lead role. Shahana impresses as always. Anjana Sukhani often relegated to thankless parts in her earlier films gets a well etched role which she performs well. Pakistani actor Humayun Saeed is very impressive.

Jashnn has some wonderful music, great performances and a good story to tell. Do check it out. You won't be disappointed.
