A ban on use of plastic bags is in place in many parts of the world & quite logical too. But shud the ban B complete . A minister had voiced the fear that a complete ban on plastics wud lead to more cutting of trees to produce paper. whats ur take on this?

well, there are pros and cons on both sides i guess...everyone's aware of the reasons why plastic bags are being said "NO" to, all over the world...and it logically follows that India should take a stand on the issue...
but the cutting of trees is definitely an issue...we're low on forest cover as it is...and with our population, there'd be tree-slaughter at breakneck speed to produce the sheer volume of paper bags we'll need...i read in the newspaper today tha there is the suggestion of a way to make plastic bags bio-degradable as well as recyclable in that form...such forms of plastic already exist in certain countries, and are in circulation...if India can come up with something of that sort, we could save ourselves some serious oxygen, by saving ourselves some seriously essential tree cover...
cheers! 😃

Plastic bags shud b banned completely as it clogs up sewers, gets eaten by animals like cows , goat. It is quite unsightly to C polythene bags lying everywhere U go. Trees need not B cut down for paper bags as recycled paper can B used

You cannot ban plastic bags completely. Plastic has the benefit of being a non permeable, sterile and versatile material with many practical uses in packaging. Modern technology allows plastic to be safely recycled. Use only recyclable plastic and do recycle it. Another alternate is biodegradable cornstarch plastics. Even paper should be recycled to save trees. The best alternative for shopping and carrying is reusable cloth bags.

^ ^ 🤣 ... am I the only one to notice this ... after having ban on homosexuality, prostitution, pre/extramarital affair, we have come to ban plastic bags! Plastic bags!! Sorry but after the 'heavy' and controversial topics we've had, the plastic bag scenario seems like extremely naive. 😆

The alternative to plastic bags seems to be recyclable paper bags only as of now !

Now banning of plastic bags doesn't make sense really until there are other alternatives up there simply because paper bags themselves generate lot of air and water pollution . This is primarily because paper bags take up lot more energy to be formed and then their recycling consumes hell lotta energy too !

And then the cost factor can not be underestimated either.

Personally speaking, i think , the best way to reduce the environmental damage due to either is by reusing whatever bags one has , and going for shopping, etc always with a cloth bag . That surely helps a lot. Moreover there should be public awareness programs educating people and specially kids first of all regarding recycling, reusing, etc rather than such bans which generally don't prove to be as effective as desired.

actually more than use its the indiscriminate ways of disposal of plastic bags that is the crux of the problem. Reusing the plastic bags shud B OK. Jute bags & cloth bags r being offered at stores as an alternative but ppl hav to pay
