Inane criticism for publicity
Misquoted: SRK has been accused of allegedly insulting the Prophet.
Shah Rukh Khan has once again been dragged into an inane controversy, for his alleged insult to the Prophet in a magazine interview. It was subsequently found that the statement was misreported. But the Mumbai Aman committee, in a knee-jerk reaction, had already called for his prosecution. Mercifully, the prompt clarification by the publication preempted any flare-up. It is unfortunate that individuals and little-known organisations take to petty criticism just to gain some publicity.
Politically correct
King Khan is one of the leading actors in the country and he won't risk giving such a statement, which may tarnish his image. Besides, he has always been politically correct in his interactions with the media.
The Aman committee should have got the facts right before accusing SRK. Prior to SRK, other celebrities like Mohammed Azharuddin and Sania Mirza have also been targetted. Such dubious activism trivialises the issue and creates doubt about the organisation. However, such private agitations are not restricted to one community.
Govt must act
Electoral politics restrain the government from taking decisive action against the perpetrators. It is time that the administration and also the public take concrete steps to curb this tendency to create turmoil in society on false pretenses.
