Chapter 16

It was three days now after that fateful night. Bani was once again at Jai's bedside, hoping that he'd open his eyes and she'd be able to drown in his chocolaty pools. She lovingly ran her hand through his hair as he lay there, looking peaceful. Just then, her cell phone buzzed. She did not recognize the number. However, she answered it.

Bani – Hello, this is Bani speaking.

Tarun – Hey Bani! Remember me?

Bani – You!

Tarun – Thanks fro such a warm greeting.

Bani – Why?

Tarun – Why what?

Bani – You know what? Why did you do this to him? It's me you want. Why hurt him? Couldn't you just leave him alone?

Tarun – No! I have spent days in jail because of you. I just want to see you hurt and unhappy. Now listen to me, if you value Jai's life, separate from him. If you don't do it, I will kill him.

Bani – I will not let you hurt him.

Tarun – But I already have my plan in place sweetheart. I have the doctor treating him under my control. He has given him drugs to keep him in this coma. A slight overdose of this drug can kill your precious husband.

Bani – Please, I'll do anything. Don't hurt him.

Right then, Bani heard a groan from Tarun as it seemed that someone shot him. She was shocked. She kept the phone to her ear wondering what was going on. Roshni came to the phone.

Roshni – Bani, meet me at Mukesh Mills. I promise I won't hurt you.

Roshni shut off the phone, leaving Bani to wonder if she should go. She can be walking right into a trap. Then, she made up her mind. She wanted to end this. She knew she wasn't alone. Jai was with her. He was always with her. She left the hospital room, telling Krishna and Anu, who were outside, that she would be back.

Bani reached Mukesh Mills to find Roshni already there. No Tarun. Roshni stood with empty hands. It looked safe. She cautiously walked towards her.

Roshni – Look Bani. I know we got off on the wrong foot. But what could I do? You got what I wanted. I was jealous of you. Jai showered all his attention on you – something I have wanted. I just called you here tonight to say that I am sorry for everything, from the kidnapping to this, now. When Tarun nearly killed Jai three nights ago, I was angry at him. But, he didn't want to stop there. He was planning to blackmail you by threatening Jai's life with drugs. I didn't even know that. I was reading his plans. He was planning to kill Jai anyway and then, he'll blame it on me. I just killed him. He knew that I loved Jai and I just wouldn't accept killing him. He was in a rage to get back at you. Well, I just ended it all. And there is something I realized. All the things you do for Jai, I would never have done. I guess it was just infatuation, not love. I know that saying sorry isn't enough, but I have already punished myself. I am surrendering to the police. Bani, if possible, please forgive me.

Bani was almost in tears. She thought that she would have to fight to end this. She went back to all the times that she ever cursed Roshni. The woman did turn out to have a heart in the end.

Bani - I forgive you Roshni.

With that, Roshni gave Bani a small smile and left in her car. Bani stood there for God knows how long, thinking of the kind of person that Roshni turned out to be. Miracles do happen. She went back to the hospital.

She happily sat at Jai's bedside after talking to the doctor. He had apologized for being misled by Tarun. He told her that Jai should wake up before morning as the effect of the drug wore off. While waiting, Bani fell asleep.

Jai woke up to feel a weight on his chest. He looked down to see Bani and smiled. What a sight to see! It was then he noticed his surroundings. It seemed that he was in a hospital room. Then he remembered that accident.

Bani awoke from her sleep when she felt Jai moving. She looked up at him to be held in a trance by his eyes. Bani just hugged him tightly. Jai tried to hug her back. After a few minutes, Bani let go.

Bani – Listen, let me get the doctor to check you out first. Then we'll talk. Okay?

Jai – Yeah!

Bani got up and left the room to get the doctor. In less than a minute, the doctor arrived and checked Jai's vitals. He was absolutely okay. Bani came back inside after the doctor left.

Jai – So can you update me on what happened?

Bani – Well…

Bani told Jai everything that happened from his accident. He was stunned to hear about Roshni.

Jai – So there is no one out there who is ever going to separate us again?

Bani – No, no one.

4 months later

Bani hugged her sister-in-law as she was about to leave…to her husband's home. Everything was just perfect for the past four months. Everyone at home was absolutely okay. Jai was just as before. Her pregnancy was going well. Anu was now married. Caesar had grown a little. He was yapping mad to have Jai back at home. It seemed that nothing can ever go wrong.

Bani – Anu, you take care of yourself. Visit me when you can. Don't forget me.

Anu – How can I forget you?

Jai (coming over to hug Anu) – Because girls tend to forget that they leave a family behind when they get married.

Rohit (looking at Bani) – I agree with you on that one.

Bani – Why are you looking at me like that? What are you implying? I remember you guys.

Rohit – Yeah right!

Jai – Rohit, I'm sorry about that. It's my fault that Bani doesn't remember you guys. You see? I keep her busy with me all the time. You know what I mean, right?

Bani hit Jai lightly.

Bani – Don't you have anything better to tell the newlyweds?

Jai – Oh yes! Take care you guys. Rohit, protect my sister and keep her happy or I really don't know what I'll do to you. Anu, take care of your husband and behave just as we brought you up.

Jai and Bani hugged Anu one last time before she left. Right after they left, Bani felt a sharp pain.

Hours later, Jai and Bani were in a hospital room, holding their baby boy, Atharva. Jai kissed Bani on her forehead.

Jai – Thank you! I love you so much.

Bani – You're welcome, and I love you too.

Epilogue

20 years later

Uday and Krishna watched their children and grandchildren around them. Today was Sunday. It was family day. Everyone was in the backyard. Jai and Bani were sitting on the grass. Their eldest son, Atharva, 20, was swimming in the pool with his brothers and sisters. There were the twin girls, Krishna and Ganga, both 18. After that were the twin boys, Rohan and Vicky, both 15. Lastly were the babies of the family, the quadruplets, two boys and two girls, Karan, Veer, Kajol and Neha, all 12. After them, Bani had sworn that she would murder Jai if she had to go through pregnancy again. Jai did not listen. Bani was expecting two more once again even at the age of 50. He said he would stop after that as now he had a cricket team.

Just then, Rano and Pushkar along with their kids, walked in. They numbered 5, and Rano was pregnant with her sixth. There was Vidya, who was Atharva's best friend. She was 20. Then there was Varun, 18. After that was Sahil, 15. Then there were twins, a boy and a girl. Their names were Mahi and Neal, both 12. Shobha was also with them.

Not long after Rano and Pushkar had arrived, Anu and Rohit arrived with their kids, along with Jigyasa and Aditya. Anu and Rohit had two kids. Their names were Tia, 18, and Rahul, 11. Anu was once again pregnant with her third.

The adults all sat to one side and discussed their own thing while the kids were playing in the pool. Everyone was in a joyous mood.

Atharva – Guys, let's play a game. Everyone, let's play tag.

Atharva (hitting Rahul) – You're it.

Everyone swam away from Rahul, Anu's son. He was the youngest in the family so far and the chubbiest. Everyone else was fit but Rahul. The kids laughed at him as he struggled to catch them.

Neal – Come on Rahul. You can go faster than that. Tia, how many pancakes did he eat this morning?

Tia – Six pancakes with the entire bottle of syrup.

Veer – Six pancakes? Are you sure it wasn't sixteen? He's looking extra chubby today.

Rahul – You guys are mean.

Karan – Rahul, when you have a big stomach, you should have a big heart too. You shouldn't be angry with us.

Rohan – Yes, I agree with him.

Sahil – Me too.

Vicky – Me three.

Rahul looked ready to cry.

All the girls crowded around him.

Mahi – Don't cry. These boys are meanies. Don't worry with them. But you are looking quite chubby though.

The girls laughed.

Vidya – Guys, stop now or he is really going to cry.

Rahul burst out crying, screaming Mommy.

Atharva – Come on, Rahul. Big boys don't cry for Mommy.

Varun – Come on. Be a big boy.

Rahul got out of the pool and ran to Anu.

Rahul – Mommy, they are mean. They are teasing me about my weight.

Anu – Well, you are looking more than chubby today.

Anu pulled her son's cheeks as the adults laughed.

Rahul – You too? I don't like you anymore. You are all mean.

Rahul ran to the farthest corner of the backyard he could find. Jai smiled as he watched his nephew run away. He knew he would have to pacify him. He and Rahul shared a special uncle-nephew relationship. Jai spoiled all the kids rotten, especially Rahul. He excused himself and went for Rahul's favorite chocolates in the fridge. He walked towards Rahul who was sitting on the swing at the farthest corner of the garden.

Jai – Hey Rahul, can I sit with you?

Rahul nodded his head. Jai sat next to him.

Jai – Are you angry with everyone?

Rahul nodded his head again.

Jai – Including me?

Rahul just kept nodding.

Jai – That's a shame because I was going to give you these chocolates.

Rahul's eyes lit up as he watched the chocolates in Jai's hand. He looked at Jai expectantly.

Jai – Okay, you want these chocolates, right?

Rahul nodded vigorously this time.

Jai – Well, you can only get them if you're not angry with us anymore. Will you forgive us?

Rahul nodded his head.

Jai – Then let's go. Everyone will say sorry to you. Is that okay?

Rahul nodded. Jai gave him the chocolates and lifted him up. He walked back to where everyone was.

Jai – Everyone, please say sorry to Rahul.

Everyone – Sorry Rahul.

Krishna – We were just teasing you honey. It's not a bad thing. We're family. It's our job to irritate each other.

Everyone laughed. Jai set Rahul down as he ran off to eat his chocolates. However, Anu took them from him and told him that he would get it after lunch. Everyone sat at the huge table in the backyard.

Lunch was a noisy affair. All the brothers and sisters turned out to be just like Anu and Jai. They quarreled nonstop at the table. The family enjoyed some more time together before the guests left.

As Jai and Bani lay in bed that night, they reflected on their life together.

Jai – It's hard to imagine life without you Bani. Every step I take, I need you by my side.

Bani – Do I need to repeat your words, because I feel exactly the same way?

Jai – I love you.

Bani – I love you too.

Jai kissed Bani passionately for about two minutes.

Jai – Who would have thought?

Bani – What?

Jai – We met due to a raffle ticket.

Bani – Yep! One raffle ticket changed our entire lives.

Positive and negative comments welcome. Thanks for reading my story. It was my first. Thanks for supporting me with your comments throughout.

I have already planned a next FF. It's name is Murder Her. I will post it as soon as I finish the first chapter.
