Heaven on Earth Videsh
Movies main idea: This movie shows the audience how a girl feels when she is wedded into a foreign place. And all the abuse she has to face and how she gets through it with still some courage left.
Lets meet the characters:
Chand: played my our very own Preity Zinta. Chand is a shy yet strong girl from India who is brought to Ontario to marry a guy.
Rocky: A angry fellow who is married to Chand. All the family reasonability's are on hi shoulders. He takes care of his parents his sisters family and is jobless.
Mother-in-law: no surprise here she is mean and is afraid that Chand will take her son away rom him so she tries to keep them to separated.
Father-in-law: Nice guy he has no control over his wife or anything else that happens in the family. He like the peace maker but no one listens to him.
Sister-in-law: Rockys sister who still lives with her parents not only that her husband who is jobless and her two kids also live with them, she is considered a burden on his mother.
Rosa: A Jamaican lady who works with Chand at the factory gives a nice twist to the story.
Now lets get on with the story: In the starting we are shown Chand who arrives from India is brought to Ontario to get married to Rocky who she has never met before. Chand is a typical shy Punjabi girl yet doesn't break down she stays strong. After they are married Chand begins to notice a change in her husband very time she suggests something she is beaten up. She asks her husband time to time that why he dos not like her to her surprise she only gets slap on the face. She shares her problem with Rosa at work who then gives her a special ingredient to grind into his drinks. Supposedly this special drink will make her husband love her more. One tie Chand puts to much of the ingredient in the drink which beings to bubble up she gets scared so she throws it outside where a cobra lives under the tree. I guess we are to believe that the Cobra takes the potion and ends up forming into the form of Rocky. Chand begins to get confused how at one point Rocky is aggressive and another time he is nice and in love with her. Chand asks the real rocky why is he doing all this instead rocky has no clue what she is talking about and says she is going crazy. She asks the other Rocky(the snake) who he is, he confuse her even more by saying I am what u want me to be. Rocky suspects that there is another man in Chands life, so to prove herself innocent she has to take an oath on a cobra and if she lies she will be bitten and if she tells the truth nothing shall happen to her?.
I don't want to ruin the ending so to find out what happens to Chand and if she makes it back home to India or not please watch Videsh, it is a power packed movie with brilliant realist characters.
What to watch out for:
* listen to the movie carefully every time Chand is abused instead of crying or breaking down she has these Punjabi sayings that all relate to her going back home to her mother. They give her strength to live it gives her belief that she will survive. My favorite was when talks about how a golden snake will come to the castle where she is trapped and save her to take her back home. You have to listen very carefully then u will understand the movie a lil more.
Preformances:
Pretiy Zinta does it again by giving a wonderful performance she portrays a Punjabi girl so well. She shows strength in her character and gives out a powerful message to women like her character who get abused like this daily. Peity Is prefect for the role of Chand and the way she zooms out of her life and sys her quotes is a must watch. The saddest part of th movie was when she didn't make the roti in the right way so her mother-in-law yells at her I was surpsied instead of looking down Chand pushes her to the ground but sadly her husband he kicks and beats her afterward. Chand tries to contact her mother so she could go back but her brother doesn't want that b/c he wasn't to come to Canda. Chand tries to tell him that there is nothing their but miseries. Now The guy that plays Rocky did a really nice joib with his role as well. Even though he is shown very negatively, he is guy that has many esponslbtys he doesn't take help from anyone even from Chand all he wants is to be left alone he is full of anger and Chand seems to be an easy target for him.
Down side of the movie is that I felt I was left with to many questions in my head of; how did this happen?, when did this happen? And my brothers fav. "What's going on?" LOL. The story idea was great but they should have made it a lil more detailed. When you watch it u don't feel like your watching a bolly film it feels more like your watching reality t.v. its really good.
Over all I would recommend this movie to everyone but I suggest not letting lil kids watch its kind of disturbing of how she is abused.
