Colour & Cavalli

He's designed everything from menswear to petswear. He has, as designer Suneet Varma says, "changed the way people 'think' fashion," and has draped some of the most beautiful women in the world in his designs.

But all this fame seems to sit lightly on designer Roberto Cavalli's Italian shoulders, as he says, "I don't like people praising me, I feel shy."

It's no secret that Cavalli loves India, and he reiterates that on his current visit to Delhi. "I've been to south India many times, and those times have only increased my love for the country," he asserts. And what does like about the Indian sense of fashion? "Their love for colours. I just love that. For the Indians, wearing colours is the real fashion."

As Cavalli's talking to us, Sonam Kapoor joins him. And the conversation veers to Bollywood and films. Cavalli will be, quite interestingly, speaking about Bollywood at the IHT luxury conference. But Sonam interrupts him with, "He is such a warm person." Quite a designer person, is she? "Not quite. I don't believe in wearing only designer clothes. In fact, I pick up stuff from flea markets all over. And what I am wearing today is also from a flea market – I picked it up from New York for $50." And what brings her here? "I am not a part of this conference. I came to the party because I was very excited about meeting Cavalli."

Back to Cavalli, then. Why Bollywood? Laughs Cavalli, "Even I don't know." But what will he speak about? "Good you asked, because I need to rehearse what I'm going to say. I actually don't know much about Bollywood, but then, I don't know much about Hollywood either. All I know is that it is all about big people, superstars and lavish parties, and so, essentially, I think Bollywood will be the same. But what I think is different in Bollywood is that it has a lot of talent, and the films make you feel good about yourself and the world after watching them. I can say this because I watch a lot of Bollywood films. I think Hollywood should take this 'niceness' of the films from Bollywood, adapt it into their storytelling."

He has been coming to India off and on, and so, he would have seen all the places, done all that is there to do here, isn't it? "I don't get the time, but there are so many things to do. To begin with, I wish I got enough time to stay here, understand the Indian culture and habits, and just get closer to India," says Cavalli.

I find Cavalli's designs a bit over the top & a bit too jarring.
