NEW DELHI: Actor-director Dev Anand has cast Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh in his coming film, Chargesheet, but made it clear that he would not campaign for the party, or any other party, in the Lok Sabha elections.
"You've seen my graph. Have you seen me canvassing for anyone? It's a question of conviction," the hero of yesteryear said here on Tuesday, recalling that he had been associated with a party (Janata Party) after the end of the Emergency.
"But that's not my cup of tea. What I'm doing now is beautiful."
Dev Anand said Mr. Amar Singh would play the role of a Home Minister in his new murder mystery which stars, besides himself, some new faces.
"It's fiction, believable fiction about murder, corruption, police and the underworld."
The film would be ready in two months and would be released in September, on his birthday.
Asked in a lighter vein whether as Home Minister Mr. Amar Singh would be made to change his clothes several times a day, Dev Anand said, "No. Hum inki topi utarwa denge (We will get his cap removed)."
Looking pleased, Mr. Amar Singh said he was a "fan" of Dev Anand and it was an honour for him to act in his film. "He has made me Home Minister even if it's in one film and for a day," he said, adding that there was no "transactional relationship" for him with Mumbai film actors.
Dev Anand said it was a political role which he thought a politician should do. Since he knew Mr. Amar Singh he offered him the part.
"If ever there is a part for the Prime Minister, I'd request him to do it too."
