Suddenly there seems to be rush within consumers to strictly COUPON SHOP i.e. look for coupons and plan your shopping list around it, to save money. The general shopping experience is kinna of satisfying, when coupons or discounts availed or getting a promotional value. However, forgetting the fact apart from items you need๐Ÿ˜ƒ, there were some items on the list that you do not๐Ÿ˜† require immediately or use frequently but anyways you saved bucks...

Check this out -

Ur need -> Wanna buy shoes of Brand that is fairly reliable, lasts for a year and no hanky panky stuff.

1. Goto to reasonable store at the mall or Kohls (desi touch), get it for around 49.99.Get out from there.

2. Look for coupons; get a whole discount catalogues for some stores, WOW 40% off at xyz store๐Ÿ˜†, plus $5 off on 1 item๐Ÿ˜†๐Ÿ˜†. Goto the store passing few desginer shirts๐Ÿ˜‰ etc .... shoe section -> Buy $99.99 shoe for $64(40%) - $5 = $59 . While checking out the catalogue for the coupon u can use, u come across those designer shirts in Aisle are at 75% off. ๐ŸฅณWow๐Ÿฅณ again, What a bargain?๐Ÿ˜†... u end up spending $175...still feeling good about it. (I know in case of women might end up at 350, don't wanna trigger another Men Vs Women here).

Does scenario 2 actually help you save money?

Do we understand that coupons / discounts / promotions are basically marketing strategy to lurk consumers๐Ÿ˜‰ to spend more? How it helps saves then?

Don't you end up spending more or buying what you don't need just in the name of getting a good deal? Have you realized the mark ups prices on the store offering coupons might actually be higher then their competitors๐Ÿ˜‰?

Wouldn't you end up saving more if coupons/discounts are set aside and shopping is done purely on basis on what is NEEDED and shop at stores that have lower mark ups, by luck if you have coupon for what u need at that store well &good, orelse coupons are best unclipped๐Ÿ˜‰?

BTW - Am reminded of this (return-policy) topic https://www.indiaforums.com/forum/debate-mansion/586219/return-policy-good-or-bad while back when I was on a spree of opening 375 topics in a year๐Ÿ˜†๐Ÿ˜† gone are the days! ๐Ÿ˜†

Ohh.. God.. Shopping.. exciting and sad at the same time.. I've had my share of experiences.. My dad had to bail me out of credit card debt twice and tht too for large sums.. this wasnt like any other bailout its much more serious.. its been two-three years and i still get "THE look" from my dad.. both times my credit cards were confiscated and never returned.. now i am down to one credit card and two debit cards.. ..

Anyways..coupons may help you save money but seriously..sometimes the things you end up buying are totally out of the blue... ie. macys coupons.. first of all Macys has soo many damn exclusions... they never appply to the things i am buying.. cosmetics. perfumes.. designer bags.. they even exlude my favorite pillows..๐Ÿ˜ก..๐Ÿ˜†.. Well it does help when you are buy kids clothes or shopping for your dad or brother cuz then u just buy bulk..
I've cut down shopping to once a week now.. i dont spend much... and plus all the macy's catelogs or any other coupons that come to my house.. they go through my dad and never reach me.. they end up in the trash....๐Ÿ˜†
TIP: the number one way to get the best in house discount.. go with your dad.. cuz then its 100% free.. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Nice Debate๐Ÿ˜Š
Your right, with coupons/discounts you buy all this stuff you don't need and think later when giving it to charity - why on earth i brought this. ๐Ÿ˜ณ
I am very good at this shopping Lark --- Oyeee Meen's learn from Moi ๐Ÿ˜†. I like today went shopping brought the thing i needed only and that was it. ๐Ÿ˜Š Usually i buy the things i need plsu one or 2 other bits usually more clothes ๐Ÿ˜†๐Ÿ˜† but generally i am very good at not over spending - Yeah im Scrooge. I'd rather save for a rainy day ๐Ÿ˜ณ and laugh at all others when they are bankrupt and in debt - own fault. ๐Ÿ˜ณ
But scenario 2 does NOT help you save money. Because you buy bits and peices you will never use/wear, you only got it because it was on sale. Yes, in some cases it does but it depends what you buy, few shirts on sale can help you save because you can wear later. Its the bits that you brought purely because you liked it at the time and the cost - so you brought it - and when home your like Geez ishouldn't have brought so that don't save you money.
If your smart like some๐Ÿ˜‰ and buy gifts/presents on sale and keep away to give to others saving money in future thats good ๐Ÿ˜› I did in Nov, every week was somene or other's B'day so when buying gifts for Sister/Bro for xmas - was 3 for 2 so got something freee so insted of another present for spoilt brats brought large jewelery box (intended for gift in the end i used it as no one elses bday to come up๐Ÿ˜ณ so its lovely and sits on my desk)๐Ÿ˜ณ
But there was this thing agesss ago - you know your Indian when.....and on it its like if you see something for $1 on sale - you buy 100 of them.....desi's always try and get the price down ๐Ÿ˜† and are cheap by natureeee --- ๐Ÿ˜†๐Ÿ˜†๐Ÿ˜† Funny if you see russel peter's - Indian Vs Chinese - tooo funny ๐Ÿ˜†๐Ÿ˜†๐Ÿ˜† (Thank Ansh for that one)

Yes absoloutely, these are like few cents/pennies off - yeah it doesn;t help to save much you think as your getting a bargain its all gud - but you just come out with something you never actually wanted or need.
Don't you end up spending more or buying what you don't need just in the name of getting a good deal? Have you realized the mark ups prices on the store offering coupons might actually be higher then their competitors๐Ÿ˜‰?
Yeah, all in the marketing but thats the whole problem. Good deals blah blah - Isn;t this one reason why we are in recession? People buying what they can NOT afford? Credit Card's etc to students = bad idea when you know they are all poor anyways ๐Ÿ˜† seriously, but i don't get why people don't have common sense either - CC's = bad idea if you Know you can not afford/have monthly regular income. No one is gonna bail u out all life. Debt's pile up etc. I don't understand these shoppers - put everything on CC - worry about it later and when time comes can't pay up. Thats why im glad i stick to own debit card - i.e. take money out which i know i have. Yeah prices vary at all stores - so i go to one i know is the cheapest for that thing ๐Ÿ˜†๐Ÿ˜† Why pay more?

Wouldn't you end up saving more if coupons/discounts are set aside and shopping is done purely on basis on what is NEEDED and shop at stores that have lower mark ups, by luck if you have coupon for what u need at that store well &good, orelse coupons are best unclipped๐Ÿ˜‰?

Yeah, if you go for what is needed you save more, but i mean discount/vouchers are only good yeah if its for right thing/right store Or food place or something. ๐Ÿ˜Š But even today mum handed me voucher for store i was gonna get stuff from. It was for haircare but it was 2 off.....and the products cost 8 - lol so it makes you buy stuff like that when their are better products which are cheaper and of course voucher was for Toni and Guy products, Mark Hill, Charles Worthington, Lee Stafford etc - not the company i would have gone for IF i was getting hair stuff...๐Ÿ˜ณ

@ meens - lol nah my dad is scrooooooge esp after he paid for half my driving lessons agesssss ago ๐Ÿ˜†๐Ÿ˜†๐Ÿ˜† mum is more kind ๐Ÿ˜†๐Ÿ˜†๐Ÿ˜† she paid for my haircut ๐Ÿ˜†๐Ÿ˜†

Interestig topic Raj and lot's of thoughts put into it. But i see a lot of those wink simlieys everywhere.๐Ÿ˜† It seems you are trying to get us all to shop.๐Ÿ˜†

I don't agree with your point fully, it really depends on the person who is shopping and the different situations that arise.

First of all, if the person is really looking for cheap stuff and trying to save some money, they will never fall into any traps, especially during this time of recession.

But yes sometimes stores have promotional events like; buy 2 get one free. Sometimes we do fall into them and yes we end up spending more money. But still we get 3 things for the price of two, and that can be kept for later.

But true sales like most stores have, in which there are no traps like buy 2, get one free we do end up saving money. Especially on those household products. Even if we buy something extra, we are not wasting money, they are probably things that we need as well, but maybe we just didn't plan to buy them on that day.

So overall, i think sales do save you money, if you smart enough to take their advantage.
