Born and brought up in Mumbai, Amit Varma is all ready to carve a niche for himself on the small screen.
This Kandivli resident started his acting career with TV ads and has established a strong fan following since then.
Currently he is seen as the multimillionaire Rohan Kapoor in Sahara One's new programme Kituu Sabb Jaantii Hai.
Speaking more about his character, he says, "I play Kituu's love interest in the serial. My role is of a millionaire who is not like a typical rich brat. He is attracted to simplicity which is why he gets attracted to Kituu, who is a simple and ordinary middle-class girl."
This is the only serial he is doing presently and Amit says it's because he wants to take things slow. "My ultimate objective is to get into films and I am going to start trying soon," he says. Apart from films, Amit says he plans to start modelling again. "I enjoy modelling and want to get back to it," he states.
Speaking about his foray into acting, he explains, "When I was a student of Don Bosco School, I used to actively participate in dramatics. However, after I joined Mithibai College, which is famous for its fashion shows, I started doing ramp shows for college festivals instead of theatre." He adds, "But I realised I did not want to take it up as a career. So, I started to audition for TV ads."
It took Varma about six months to get his first break with a Thums Up commercial. Following that he did many other commercials including ones for Lifebuoy, Surf, VIP, BSNL, Airtel, Kinetic Nova, Birla amongst others.
From commercials, Amit ventured into plays and acted in several of them including some with veteran actor Kader Khan. But never losing sight of acting in front of the camera, Amit says his first breakthrough came with his role in Khichdi on Star Plus, where he played the compulsive flirt Raju.
Soon he was soon offered Hotel Kingston for Star One where he played the central character of Vish. Talking about his characters he says, "I can relate to all my characters in bits and pieces especially to Vish because of his happy go lucky persona and simplicity."
Amit believes his interest in acting has a lot to do with his family. "My uncles are producers and so I have always been connected to the film world. I have always known that I wanted to act. So, it didn't come as a shock to anyone when they came to know I wanted to be an actor."
Apart from acting Amit's other passion is cricket. "If I wasn't an actor then I would have been a cricketer," he says. In fact in school, he took cricket coaching from Ramakant Archrekar — Sachin Tendulkar's coach, but had to give it up to concentrate on his education. "I was equally passionate about acting so made up my mind that this time, I will not let anything be a hindrance to my acting career," he says.
