The strictness in following customs and traditions are for young widows, for older woman who have been widows for sometime the traditions are a little lax as they have proved themselves that they can lead the life of a widow successfully.
That's a good justification to this. But I guess in general not too bright colors, not designed and flowery patterns, and sobre colors are worn by widows.
