Move over Helen and Urmila, here's our definitive list of the sexiest women in Bollywood
Buzz18

The face of the modern item girl has undergone a drastic change today. Even some of the top heroines wouldn't think twice before engaging in some gyrations under the name of 'special appearance'. We bring you the top ten item girls in Bollywood today.

Yana Gupta is popularly known as the official item girl in Bollywood. The sexy Czech-born model who came to Mumbai after she married artist Satyakam Gupta was a popular face in the Page Three circuit. Soon enough she managed to find herself on the coveted Kingfisher Swimsuit Calendar. But she hit it big only after performing to Babuji in the film Dum. Okay so it may have been a rip-off from the Salma Hayek number in From Dawn Till Dusk. But then again, we can't think of anyone else who could have dared to do it either. So it's Yana at number ten for Babuji. It's a pity though she never really managed to sustain the success and popularity after that.
They call her the thinking man's sex symbol. But sometimes even thinking men could do with some jhatkas. And Sushmita Sen knows it well. The actress, who has been in the news less for her acting skills than her personal life, has done a memorable item song in Hrithik Roshan's second film Fiza. Mehboob mere was the instant hit of that year and helped Sunidhi Chauhan establish herself. Sush, with her height and the stature of a model, has always been a bit of an odd woman out in Bollywood. Probably that's the reason why she's always managed to stand out in all her songs… even if it's been with the screen hogger, Shah Rukh Khan. And for this very reason, we are even ready to forgive her that horrendous song from Nayak. Sushmita Sen at number nine for her tremendous screen presence that makes men weak in the knees.
Who would have thought Ishaa Koppikar ending up as a Rajshri heroine? The sexy starlet pretty much got noticed after her song Khallas (Company) hit the screens. The only other memorable thing she did after that was yet another item song, this time in the Amitabh Bachchan-starrer Kaante. Meanwhile Ishaa had managed to carve a niche in the South Indian film industry. But Bollywood continued to remain a mirage. It was around 2004 that things began to change for her. It was a year that saw almost one Koppikar release every month. Shah Rukh Khan's Don also contributed considerably towards her Bollywood career. Today, the actress has moved far beyond the 'Khallas girl' tag, so much so that one of her forthcoming films is with Rajshri Productions. Makes us wonder though if she's planning to give up her sexy image altogether? Either way, simply for establishing herself in a way she did, Ishaa Koppikar is at number eight on our list.
Lara Dutta did two films – Mumbai Se Aaya Mera Dost and Andaaz – before showing off her oh-so-perfect figure in Khakee. But Aisa jadoo did just exactly for this dusky heroine. It worked its magic on her career and helped her to inch into mainstream Bollywood. Insiders insist she had managed to strike gold much earlier, thanks to her alleged affair with a certain textile tycoon. But the young man never managed to give her the one thing she desperately wanted – a place under the Bollywood sun. With films like Masti, Kaal and No Entry, Lara began to make her presence felt within the industry. But it was Jhoom Barabar Jhoom that finally cemented her position as a mainstream actress. Needless to say the textile tycoon is no longer part of her life. She even broke of with Kelly Dorji. But hey, with a couple of big budget projects in her kitty, we don't hear Lara Dutta complaining. So here's to the JBJ girl at number seven.
Whether one likes to admit it or not, it took a Dhoom to catapult Esha Deol into the limelight. The sexy star had done over half-a-dozen films before that. But it was the Dhoom title song that gave her more visibility than all those films. Strictly speaking, Esha has not done an item song till this year. Her number in Sunday is what many would qualify as the first. But Esha is and will probably always be remembered for the Dhoom number and the skin show in the film's rain song – Dilbara. So never mind if Esha Deol hasn't managed to deliver that one solo hit of her career. The fact is with a body like that, many of us would be happiest seeing her in item songs, wouldn't we? For her perfect body, which she is so comfortable in, Esha Deol is our number six.
Damn the artificial assets and a body that has been crafted by a surgeon's knife. Rakhi Sawant has no qualms about accepting a few truths about her body in public and that's what we like about her. "The doctors gave me what God didn't!" she has famously said. The sassy girl, who started off from a Maharashtrian village, now makes news for practically everything she does. With over three item songs to her credit, Rakhi has been better known as an item girl than anything else. Thanks to the entertainment channel boom, Rakhi's managed to use her skills to better use though reality and dance shows. Rakhi's latest is her item song in Krazzy 4, for which she is said to have charged an astronomical amount. Simply for being who she is, Rakhi Sawant is the number four item girl on our list.
Not many may like Aishwarya Raibeing called an item girl. But when you think of it, the songs she has been part of have managed to grab more eyeballs than the movie they've been part of. Ishq kameena was part of a film called Shakthi The Power starring Karisma Kapoor. The film has long since faded away from public memory but the song is still remembered. Ditto for Kajra re. Of course, Bunty Aur Babli was a phenomenal hit. But somehow, the song has outlived the film. Never mind if her dress showed off her tyres in both the songs, it was her star value that actually helped her to carry off something like that. For carrying off her love handles the way she did, Aishwarya Raiis on number three of the top ten item girls list.
They say the reason Mallika Sherawat didn't perform this New Year's Eve was because she's now the arm candy of a certain telecom giant. But the last year when she made a two-bit appearance at a five star hotel in Mumbai for on December 31, she had the entire country's media eating out of her hand. For days on end we heard of nothing other than Ms Sherawat's moves. So much so, it was she who got hired by Mani Ratnam to perform an item song in his film Guru. Needless to say the song was indeed one of the major highlights of the films. But it was Mehbooba Mehbooba in Aap Ka Suroor that made Mallika the most expensive item girl. She is said to have charged Rs 15 million for the song. Mallika may not have too many big budget projects lined up. But hey when you charge that kind of money just for a five-minute appearance in a film, it qualifies you to be in the top three item girls of our times.
For one long year, Kareena Kapoor had no job and no one was ready to touch her with a bargepole. Of course the official version was that she was 'on vacation'. During this time the only big screen appearance Kareena managed to bag was in Shah Rukh Khan's Don. The song, Yeh Mera Dil however got her more brickbats than bouquets. So when it was time to make a comeback the sexy Kapoor had no option but to return with an item song in a vague film called Kya Love Story Hai. Directed by one Lovely Singh, the film starred Ayesha Takia and Tusshar Kapoor. Bebo has come a long way after that, what with a Filmfare trophy on her shelf and Saif Ali Khan in the pocket! But here's to Kareena the second best item girl of our times! Why? For starting her career from the scratch with an immensely forgettable item song from a two-bit movie!
Just what makes Malaika Arora Khan topple Kareena Kapoor in this list, you may wonder. To begin with unlike Kareena, Malaika has had neither a godfather nor a filmy family backing her up. A college dropout Malaika had her eyes set on the ramp. And sure enough she managed to make it to the cover of a magazine when she was barely 17! Then with a few music videos she managed to carve a niche for herself on the small screen. But who can forget that immortal AR Rahman number – Chaiyya chaiyya from Dil Se? Filmed entirely atop a train the song not only made news for its choreography (by Farah Khan) but also made Malaika a sort of national figure. She never really managed to make a mark as an actress but did yet another item song with Shah Rukh in Kaal. But Malaika was never an actress, a fact she has known all along. Today, even though she has been married into Salman Khan's family, Malaika continues to work just as hard as she used to. And it is this relentless drive to perform that makes her our number one item girl.
